Effects of the Press on Spanish-American Relations in 1898
By John Baker Contents
Background February 1898 On the Way to War Ethnic Minorities, War and the Press ... Bibliography The Spanish-American War of 1898 marked a turning point in American history. Within a few years of the war's end, the United States was a world power, exercising control or influence over islands in the Caribbean Sea, the mid-Pacific Ocean and close to the Asian mainland. The conflict has sometimes been called "The Newspaper War," largely because the influence of a sensationalist press "Yellow Journalism" (see Yellow Journalism sidebar) supposedly brought on the fighting. Key to a sense of rage propagated by the media were the events of February 1898, which culminated with the destruction of an American battleship, the USS Maine , in a Cuban harbor. The media sensationalized the events in February and the two months following until war began, prompting a debate that still rages whether the press merely reflected the publi's desire for war, or, in fact, actually fed it. (Above, a late February 1898 San Francisco Examiner front page).

Jews Who Served With Honor In The Spanish-American War
by Seymour "Sy" Brody When the battleship MAINE was sunk on February 15, 1898, there were 15 Jewish sailors who went down with the ship. The executive officer of the MAINE, and later a vice admiral in the United States Navy, was Adolph Marix, a Jew. Marix was the chairman of a board of inquiry to investigate the mysterious sinking of the MAINE. It is interesting to note that his father was an interpreter in the Lincoln Administration and that Abraham Lincoln appointed Adolph Marix to the United States Naval Academy. When the United States declared war against Spain on April 21, 1898, the first volunteer was Colonel Joseph M. Heller, who left a thriving medical practice to become an acting assistant surgeon in the Army. About 5,000 Jews served in this war. When the Jewish High Holy Days were approaching in 1898, there were 4,000 requests for furloughs to attend services. There were indeed 30 Jewish Army officers and 20 more in the Navy in the Spanish-American War. Jewish casualties ran high for the percentage of Jews in the service. Twenty-nine were killed, 47 wounded, and 28 died from disease - for a total of 104.

Advertisements from the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars
By Jim Zwick
W
hen the Spanish-American War began in April of 1898, American businesses responded quickly, capitalizing on the public's interest in the war. Many publicized real or imagined associations with the military. Williams' Shaving Stick was "the favorite with the Army and Navy." Royal Baking Powder was "specially selected for use in both the Army and Navy." Supporting the war effort, the Prudential Insurance Company and New York Life Insurance Company announced that their present policy-holders could serve in the military without paying extra premiums. Proclaiming that "women are more patriotic than men," Silver Sheen Novelty Skirtings produced a new line of "Red, White and Blue Skirting." Waltham went for gift sales with the suggestion that "every American soldier and every American sailor should carry the best American watch." Seven advertisements from the war years with distinctive graphic images are reproduced below. Ranging from a suggestion that Ivory Soap be used to prepare for "any battle of life" to an ad for Grape-Nuts cereal that used contemporary concerns about cannibalism in the tropics to pitch its stomach-strengthening qualities, they demonstrate the variety of approaches companies used to associate their products with the war, the new colonies, and the "progress" and "civilization" of the world.

In the spring of 1898 the United States entered the Spanish American War in an effort to help Cubans who were under the rule of Spain at the time. An American ship the USS Main was sunk in Havana Harbor of Cuba on February 15, 1898 and was the event that set off our involvement. National Guard Units were the first to come around from Michigan with volunteers added. A Naval Unit also served. More deaths resulted from disease than the battle. The list of volunteers from Michigan are being entered on these pages. Index By Name Index by County Index by Company
