POLITICS-PUERTO RICO: Day of Celebration or Condemnation?
By Carmelo Ruiz SAN JUAN, Jul 27 (IPS) - One hundred years ago American troops disembarked on the shores of the southern Puerto Rican town of Guanica. That invasion, part of the Spanish-American war, put an end to 400 years of Spanish colonialism and began the American occupation of this Caribbean island. So should it be a time of celebration for the Puerto Rican people? It all depends on who one asks. For the ruling New Progressive Party (NPP) Jul. 25 was a day to celebrate 100 years of American democracy. The main opposition, the Popular Democratic Party, celebrated the anniversary of the current commonwealth status, which now turns 46 years old. But for the independence movement, it was the anniversary of the US colonial regime. Both the NPP and the independence movement (Nuevo Movimiento Independista) carried out activities of their own in Guanica, packing this quiet coastal town with tens of thousands of visitors. The roads leading to the town were so congested that thousands of cars were stuck in an enormous traffic jam that stretched all the way to the neighbouring town of Yauco. The independence movement activities, hosted by the Puerto Rico Independence Party (PIP), had the participation of all other pro-independence organisations, including the Nationalist Party, the Socialist Front, the New Independence Movement and the Congreso Nacional Hostosiano.

Important Notice - New Law Concerning Eligibility for Headstones and Markers
There are specific styles of upright marble or granite headstones to mark the graves of Union and Confederate Civil War and Spanish-American War dead. Traditional styles of headstones and markers can also be requested when the historical style is either not desired, or is not acceptable for placement in certain private cemeteries. To request a special style select the appropriate box in block 11 for upright marble (U), or upright granite (V) and write the words “special style” in block 11 so it is legible. The inscription on the special historical headstone is limited. For Civil War Union and Spanish American War, a shield is inscribed which encompasses the arched name, then abbreviated military service. Because of the special design and historical uniform significance, no emblem of belief or additional inscription may be inscribed. The dates of birth and death are inscribed below the shield. The inscription on the special style for Civil War Confederate is also limited. The Southern Cross of Honor is automatically inscribed at the top. The name is arched, followed by abbreviated military service and dates of birth and death. No additional items of inscription can be inscribed. If a flat marker is desired for a Confederate soldier, the Southern Cross of Honor can be inscribed if requested, or any of the other approved emblems may be inscribed if requested.

McKinley explains his reasons for retaining the Philippines
GENERAL: William McKinley (1843-1901) was the 25th president of the United States. During his administration, the two important issues of tariff and currency were overshadowed by the Spanish-American War of 1898. Under his administration, the United States gained its first overseas possessions, presenting the country with new problems of world power and territorial expansion. BIOGRAPHY: William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, on January 29, 1843, the seventh child of William and Nancy McKinley. William briefly attended Allegheny College, and was teaching in a country school when the Civil War broke out. Following the war, he studied law, began practicing in Canton Ohio, and married Ida Saxton. At age 34, McKinley won a seat in Congress. He was appointed to the Ways and Means Committee. Those who served with him attest that in his votes, he often sided with the public and avoided private interests. During his 14-year tenure with the House, McKinley became a leading expert on tariffs. He later became governor of Ohio, serving two terms. As a congressman, governor and later, president, McKinley, a man of moderation and compromise, held firmly to two beliefs: favorable tariff to stimulate American business and limited coinage of silver.

Theodore Roosevelt
and the Image of Empire
By Jim Zwick
Political cartoon of Theodore Roosevelt Hon. Theodore Roosevelt. I n its "Record of Current Events" column in May of 1898, the American Review of Reviews published a photograph of Theodore Roosevelt with a brief caption saying that he had been commissioned a lieutentant-colonel of cavalry volunteers. The photo (at right) is interesting as one of the last distributed through the press before his image was transformed during and after the Spanish-American War. Roosevelt's fame as a leader of the Rough Riders dominated post-war portrayals, and his April 10, 1899, speech on "The Strenuous Life" seemed to solidify the change in his image. His advocacy of imperialism, war, and the strenuous life were combined in images published after the Spanish-American War. Whether he was shown making a charge up Capitol Hill or engaging in hand-to-hand combat with grizzly bears in Colorado, Theodore Roosevelt was the conquering hero. His image became a personification of American imperialism. This collection shows how that image was developed in political cartoons published from 1898 onward.

140. American Privateers Of War Of 1812 Buried In Halifax, Nova Scotia
A brief account of Royal Navy prisoners on Deadman's and Melville Islands, american privateers, prisoners of the war of 1812, runaway slaves, Irish refugees, and French and spanish prisoners of the Napoleonic wars.
http://www.usmm.org/halifax1812.html
Old war's victims forgotten no longer [Privateers of War of 1812 buried in Halifax] Colin Nickerson, Boston Globe Staff, 5/12/2000 Halifax, Nova Scotia - Except for the name, there is nothing to suggest the sad history of Deadman's Island . No plaques, no crosses, no mounds. Just 2.5 acres of forlorn bogland surmounted by a spruce knoll. The site isn't even a true island but a spit of land jutting into Halifax Harbor's Northwest Arm. But in this unhallowed ground, forgotten by the country that sent them off to fight, lie the bodies of 188 American sailors and soldiers taken prisoner by British regulars and Canadian colonial forces during the War of 1812 ''No doubt their loved ones wept, but they seem to have vanished from the memory of the US,'' said Guy MacLean, a leader of the Northwest Arm Heritage Association and one of the Halifax residents whose recent fight to save Deadman's Island from development ended up pricking the conscience of American veterans groups and, finally, the US government. ''What started as a very local controversy over this land became a history lesson that reverberated on both sides of the border,'' MacLean said.
