Photo of Sigsbee in the captain's cabin aboard the Maine The battleship Maine drifted lazily at its mooring. Although the Havana night was moonless, the Maine 's gleaming white hull longer than a football field contrasted against the blackness of the sea and sky. Smoke wisped from its two mustard-colored funnels. Random lights sparkled from its portholes and its bridge. In the captain's cabin, Charles Sigsbee sat at a table writing a letter to his wife. The trouble in Cuba, he wrote, would soon be over. The new Spanish governor of the island seemed to have the situation under control. During the three weeks that the Maine had been in Havana, Captain Sigsbee had seen no sign of Cuban rebels. He'd entertained the Spanish officers in his mess, and he and his staff had been entertained lavishly by the local officials. Although Sigsbee found the bullfights to which he'd been invited somewhat barbaric, the Spanish officers behaved as perfect gentlemen.

LEANDRO L. FULLON (1873-1904)
Commanding General for the Visayas
Philippine revolutionary army (Katipunan)

On September 6, 1898, Gen. Leandro Fullon embarked on the gunboat Don Francisco at Cavite
to command Filipino revolutionary forces in the island of Panay. Together with Gen. Ananias Diocno and Gen. Martin Delgado, he led Filipino troops against Spanish forces under Gen. Diego de los Rios. Later, they fought against American troops commanded by Gen. Marcus P. Miller and Gen. Robert P. Hughes. Throughout the conflict, Fullon urged military leaders in the island to remain united and the troops to adhere to the highest standards of discipline, integrity and patriotism. He sought to resolve conflicts between the civilian government and the military leadership in Panay while battling corruption and abuses of power in both sectors. He was appointed provincial governor in 1901 and he supervised the census for the Visayas in 1903. Born in Hamtik, Antique on March 13 1873, he died on October 16, 1904.

War and Empire in Fourth of July Cartoons
Edited by Jim Zwick
C uba Libre!" was a popular rallying cry within the United States during the Spanish-American War. Before the war, both Congress and President William McKinley renounced any intention to annex Cuba. "I do not speak of forcible annexation," McKinley said in a message to Congress, "because that is not to be thought of, and under our code of morality that would be criminal aggression." Despite the pre-war rhetoric, the Spanish-American War ended with a treaty that ceded to the United States control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. Only Cuba was promised eventual independence. The strong anti-imperialist sentiment that preceded the war and inspired wartime slogans presented problems after the war to those who supported annexation of Spain's former colonies. During the colonization of the Philippines, which required a protracted war and provoked the most heated opposition within the United States, Independence Day was used to mark transitions in U.S. rule. The first civilian U.S. government was established in the Philippines on July 4, 1901, and President Theodore Roosevelt declared the Philippine-American War over on July 4, 1902. The symbolic use of the Fourth of July masked the establishment of a colonial government and the defeat of the Philippine Revolution for independence, the very opposite of what the date signified in U.S. history.

S tereoscopic Visions of War and Empire is an interpretive archive of 3-D stereoscopic photographs of the Spanish-American and Philippine-American wars, the colonies acquired by the United States at the turn of the century, and other representations of imperialism and empires produced at the end of the nineteenth century and first decades of the twentieth. It is intended both to highlight the significance of stereoscopic photographs as a distinct popular medium that contributed to domestic debates about imperialism and to provide access to a diverse sample of stereoscopic images for those interested in pursuing further studies. In addition to more than 400 images housed at this site, it provides links to about 100 stereoviews of the wars and the presidents most closely associated with imperialism that are available elsewhere on the Web.

Background
For several centuries Spain 's position as a world power had been slipping away. By the late nineteenth century the nation was left only a few scattered possessions in the Pacific Africa , and the West Indies . Much of the empire had gained its independence and a number of the areas still under Spanish control were clamoring to do so. Guerrilla forces were operating in the Philippines , and had, for decades, been present in Cuba . The Spanish government did not have the financial resources or the manpower to deal with these revolts and thus turned to expedients of building camps to separate the rebels from their rural base of support. The Spaniards also carried out many executions of suspected rebels and harshly treated villages and individuals thought to be supporting them. By the end of the
