7.8 The Spanish - American War (1898)
Towards the end of the 19th Century, America got involved in a war with Spain. The war was fought over the question of Cuban independence. Cuba had risen against the Spanish regime. The atrocities committed by the Spanish authorities aroused sympathy in the Americans for the Cuban fight for freedom. Theodore Roosevelt and his small band of supporters in the Congress wanted to intervene and liberate the Cubans. The U.S declared war on Spain, when a U.S battleship ’Maine’ was blown up in the Havana Harbor, Cuba. The public was furious. And the Slogan: Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain

LINKS
Hampton Roads Military History Books on the Spanish-American War Military History Periodicals Virginia State History ... American Local History Network Topic Page The Spanish-American War (SAW) was one of the five most important foreign wars in US history. In the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the American States achieved, and then defended, their independence. In the Mexican-American War, the United States established its Continental dominance. In World War II, the US halted the most violent and destructive ideology to date, and established itself as the clear leader of the free world. In the Spanish-American War, the US laid the foundation for its leadership role in WW II (and WW I), the Cold War, and beyond. It was the SAW which provided international recognition of the US as a great power. At the same time, the SAW had two major impacts within the US. One the one hand, it made Americans aware of a greater world around them, and of the need for the US to play its part. By defeating Spain hands down (after much speculation concerning the size and might of Spain's armed forces) Americans also gained self confidence in the ability of the US to project power abroad. On the other hand, the SAW was promoted largely as a "crusade" against an evil regime – much like both World Wars, like Korea and Vietnam, and like the ongoing war against terrorism. Unlike previous American conflicts which were largely fought for practical reasons – defeating Indian raiders, opening up new territories for settlements, acquiring resource-rich lands – the SAW was ostensibly fought for two reasons: liberating the oppressed people of Cuba from what was perceived as the Spanish whip (Spain played into US hands by establishing concentration camps and a brutally repressive regime to deal with local independence movements) and exacting revenge for the bombing of the Maine (attributed at the time to Spanish agents).

US foreign trade history: Status after the Spanish American war
[THE FOLLOWING ARE THE VIEWS OF GENERAL JOSEPH WHEELER]
Decisive events in American history seem to have been thrust upon us by a power which has come unheralded, unfelt and unseen. There appears to have been an impelling something quite akin to elective force and the laws which govern everything in nature. For thousands of years the light of progress and civilization has been traveling westward, growing brighter and brighter at every step of its steady and measured advance.
Our wonderful country was the home of savage Indians for forty or probably fifty or more centuries during which the vast populations in that part of Asia adjacent to the Pacific Ocean enjoyed many elements of high civilization.
The often repeated expression "Westward the star of Empire takes its flight," which as generally accepted only referred to this country, in reality applies to the progress of all enlightened nations of which we have any positive information.
Persia, Egypt, Greece and Rome successively felt the light and blessing of civilization, perhaps not precisely, but nearly so in their order of western longitude, and finally the Mediterranean became the field of the world's commerce, and the countries washed by its waters became the seat of progress, arts and civilization, England, then barbaric, soon felt the dawn of a new life, and the Atlantic, up to that time unexplored, except near European shores, was crossed and the American continent made known to the world. Settlements upon the Atlantic coast of this new country, and the gradual but steady expansion westward did not result from a matured plan, emanating from a human mind, but it was rather the logical course of events, impelled forward by an unseen hand.

Course: Modern American History Topic: Spanish American War Era
Outcomes: Peoples of the Nation and World, Geography
Teacher Background:
Students should recognize the political, humanitarian, and economic implications which were involved with the acquisition of the Philippines following the Spanish American War. Information needed to be included:
  • Present reasons for acquiring the Philippines Identify government's official position for acquisition of the Philippines Explore the reasons for opposition to acquiring the Philippines Identify ways the U.S. government attempted to help the Philippines develop its economy, educational system, etc.
Description of Sample Activities:
1. Have students compute the distance between the U.S. and the Philippines. Upon completion of this activity, instruct students to imagine themselves as late 19th century United States citizens. Have them form teams and debate the pros/cons of annexing the Philippines.
2. Have students research the economic conditions and educational system of the late 19th century Philippines and compare these conditions to those of the Philippines of the late 1940's. Based on these comparisons have students write a conclusion to the following question: Did the Philippines benefit from a United States takeover?
3. Have students research Teddy Roosevelt's beliefs and attitudes about the Philippines. Using the events that actually took place in the Pacific Rim in the 20th century, have students assess the validity of Roosevelt's position.

When the U. S. declared war on Spain in April 1898, four regiments were filled with Kansas volunteers. Most Americans were eager to participate in what was later called the "splendid little war." By August 1898, the U. GENERAL:
The USS OREGON was one of the newest American battleships in 1898. Her run from the Pacific to the Atlantic at the outbreak of hostilities was a highlight of the conflict. OREGON took part in the destruction of the Spanish Fleet at Santiago, Cuba, and is credited for actions against the Spanish vessels INFANTA MARIA TERESA VISCAYA ALMIRANTE OQUENDO PLUTON, and FUROR in that engagement.
BACKGROUND:
The USS OREGON was one of the new fleet of battleships promoted a special board created in 1890 to recommend the manner in which to update the U.S. Navy so that it could defend adequately against the imperial world powers, as well as by the nations of South America (several of which had larger vessels than any in the U.S. Navy). The board realized the need for battleships with a long-range cruising capability. However, many members of the United States Congress were in favor of Isolationism, and opposed long-range battleships as they were obviously not intended strictly for coastal defense. To assuage fears of the Isolationists, the new class of vessels were called "Sea-going coast-line Battleships". The name, an all-covering oxymoron, was thought to be particularly brilliant and useful by

The Wars of 1812 and 1846 and the Spanish American War
The War of 1812
The USS CONSTITUTION met and defeated HMS GUERRIERE, the first in a grand succession of victories in the War of 1812. It was during this ferocious battle that the seamen, astonished at the way the British cannonballs were bouncing off the Constitution's hull, cried out -"Her sides are made of iron!" Thus, her nickname,"Old Ironsides."
What was not known at the time was the fact that a U.S. Marine, serving aboard Old Ironsides, as George Baker, was actually Lucy Brewer. Eventually the Marine Corps reluctantly acknowledged that Lucy Brewer was perhaps the very first woman marine. Here's the way the Historical Division of the USMC tells the Lucy Brewer story:
It would be over one hundred years before the Marine Corps seriously began to recruit women - August 1918 - to be specific.
Mexican American War - 1846
Sarah Borginis:
Mrs. Borginis and a Mrs.Foley enlisted with their husbands into the 8th calvary at the Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Sarah became the principal cook at Fort Brown (Fort Texas) and stayed on the job when General Taylor moved most of his troops to the mouth of the Rio Grande. However, when the Mexicans began bombarding Fort Texas, (Fort Brown) from their positions at Matamoros, she was isssued a musket. It's said she took an active part in the ensuing fray, never missing a target or preparing a meal. Gen. Zachary Taylor breveted her to colonel, making her the first female colonel of the U.S.Army. She moved to El Paso and opened a hotel. For years it was a favorite stop of '49ers heading for the California gold fields. She later moved to Arizona and ran a Yuma saloon until her death in 1866. Col. Borginis was buried at Fort Yuma with full Military Honors - the first woman to be a ranking U.S.Army officer - albeit a brevet one.
