The Spanish-American War Beyond Manifest Destiny
At the end of the nineteeth century, some Americans sensed a restlessness in the air. The western frontier was rapidly becoming settled. Many people agreed with historian Frederick Jackson Turner when he predicted that "American energy will continually demand a wider field for its exercise." Turner believed that for the American spirit to thrive, it needed a frontier.
Influential leaders like Senator Henry Cabot Lodge from Massachusetts, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, and newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst took Turner's ideas one step further. They believed that America was in fact destined to expand beyond its borders. Expansion, as Roosevelt later explained, meant "not only the extension of liberty and order, and the bringing nearer by gigantic strides of the day when peace shall come to the whole earth."
An Opportunity for Expansion Cuba, only ninety miles off the coast of the United States, presented American espansionists with an opportune chance to end their country's isolation and assert its power in world affairs. Spanish control over the island had weakened considerably since the late 1860s, when Cuban rebels first began to agitate for their independence. In the 1870s a prolonged uprising took place against the Spanish; and in 1895, a revolution began.
In the United States, citizens sympathetic to the Cuban rebels were calling for war against Spain. Sensation reports such as this appeared in the "Yellow Press":

SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR
The Spanish-American War—that "splendid little war," as John Hay characterized it to Theodore Roosevelt—has undergone several changes of meaning as an event in American history. At the time, and for long thereafter, it was generally regarded as an unsullied instance of applied idealism: a precursor of the American crusades to make the world safe for democracy in World War I and to defeat fascism in World War II. Then in the disillusioned wake of the First World War, and again in the era of Vietnam, the war came to be seen as an ugly instance of imperialism: the overture to the expansion abroad of twentieth-century American capitalism and military power. A more accurate perspective would avoid the exaggerations of both the idealist and the imperialist views. The war can most usefully be seen as the product of a particular historical moment, of a distinctive combination of external pulls and internal pushes. The most immediate cause was the crisis in Spanish-American relations emerging from the Cuban rebellion against Spanish rule and Spain's brutal but ineffective response. The leaders of the Cuban revolt used the United States as their base of operations and received a good deal of their financial and material support from American sympathizers—much as many other nationalist revolutionaries did in decades to come. Modern, too, was the scale and immediacy of the coverage by the surging American press, alert to the circulation-building potential of a popular insurrection so close to U.S. shores. American opinion was inflamed as well by the undeniably brutal consequences of the Spanish military's concentration of masses of Cuban civilians in areas under their control: about 100,000 of them died between 1896 and 1898.

Spanish-American War
(April 25-August 12, 1898), conflict between the United States and Spain. Begun over the cause of Cuban independence, the war marked the emergence of the United States as a world power and the beginning of American overseas imperialism. Most of the fighting occurred in the Spanish possessions of Cuba and the Philippines on opposite sides of the world. The expansionists in the United States wanted to acquire Cuba, and in 1895 Cuban nationalists began an insurrection against the Spanish government. After Gen. Valeriano Weyler herded Cuban farmers into concentration camps and took other measures to put down the insurrection, William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer started their yellow Journalism newspaper war, molding public opinion in favor of U.S. intervention against Spain and the annexation of Cuba. With the blowing up of the battleship USS Maine in Havana Harbor and the loss of 266 lives, President William McKinley was pressured by Congress into asking for a declaration of war.

Yellow Fever and the spanish american war Provides history of theReed Commission of 1898-1901. Twelve Chapters with bibliography.

Victory in the Spanish American War made the U.S. a nation with global interests. In one brief clash of arms the U.S. acquired Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippine Islands from Spain. In addition, Cuba was granted independence, with Spain assuming its national debt. Many Americans were appalled by the new U.S. foreign policy, which they equated with imperialism. Andrew Carnegie, the steel magnate and philanthropist, offered to buy the Philippines for $20,000,000 and give the country its freedom. Many other Americans, however, talked of manifest destiny and the duty of the U.S. to spread its form of civilization far and wide. April 24 - The Spanish American War officially began when Spain declared war on the U.S. The following day Congress passed a declaration of war, effective April 21. Battle of Manila Bay At the Battle of Manila Bay, the six-ship Asiatic squadron of Commodore George Dewey decisively defeated a larger but outgunned and underprepared Spanish fleet. The U.S. flotilla emerged virtually unscathed, with only eight wounded. The Spanish fleet was destroyed, with heavy casualties. The action cleared the way for U.S. occupation of Manila in August.

Utah History Encyclopedia The Spanish American War, which lasted from March to December in 1898, was a short war; but it was significant in bringing the United States into the world arena as a major power. The United States defeated the Spanish forces in naval and land battles in the Philippine Islands, in Cuba, and in Puerto Rico. In many ways, the war was a comedy of errors and a "lark" for Americans, who saw the war as a romantic adventure to save the native Filipinos and Cubans from the oppressive Spanish government and to defend the honor of the United States.
The service rendered by each of these units varied: some saw military action; others were stationed in areas of the United States and Hawaii. Batteries A and B, Utah Light Artillery, were mustered in on 9 May 1898 and proceeded to the Manila campaign in the Philippines. The officers appointed to lead these units were Captain Richard W. Young (a West Point graduate, former regular army artilleryman, and a son of Brigham Young), and Captain Frank Grant (who had served in the Utah National Guard as a colonel). In the Philippines, these units fought as the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division. The American campaigns resulted in the capture of Manila and the surrender of the Spanish troops on 14 August 1898.
After the defeat of the Spanish troops, the war moved into the Philippine Insurrection phase, in which the Americans fought against the Filipinos who were trying to gain their independence. American troops, assisted by the Utah Artillery until 1899, continued to fight until the insurrectionists were defeated in 1901. Utah A and B batteries left the Philippines on 24 June 1899, having fought in more than one hundred engagements and suffering casualties of fifteen men killed by fighting or disease and fourteen others wounded.

1. BEFORE THE WAR
The dream of Cuban independence existed for over one-hundred years before the Spanish-Cuban-American War, and it was actively opposed by the U.S. at every possible occasion. During the British occupation of Havana that began in June 1762, shortly after England declared war on Spain, Cuban planters were able to sell their goods on the open market, for the first time. Under traditional Spanish rule, they sold their goods to the Spanish government, at government-set prices. The government then sold the goods on the open market and kept the profits. The Cubans found it much more profitable to sell their products to many buyers at competitive prices, and when the British and the Spanish traded Havana for Florida in 1763, Cuban businesses were forced back to the old oppressive system. Thus began the dream of Cuban independence By 1894, less than 20% of sugar mill owners in Cuba were Cubans, and more than 95% of all Cuban sugar exports went to the U.S.

GENERAL:
The USS INDIANA was one of the newest American battleships in 1898. She took part in the destruction of the Spanish Fleet at the Battle of Santiago off Cuba on July 3, one of the two major naval engagements of the war.
BACKGROUND:
The USS INDIANA was one of the new fleet of battleships promoted a special board created in 1890 to recommend the manner in which to update the U.S. Navy so that it could defend adequately against the imperial world powers, as well as by the nations of South America (several of which had larger vessels than any in the U.S. Navy). The board realized the need for battleships with a long-range cruising capability. However, many members of the United States Congress were in favor of Isolationism, and opposed long-range battleships as they were obviously not intended strictly for coastal defense. To assuage fears of the Isolationists, the new class of vessels were called "Sea-going coast-line Battleships". The name, an all-covering oxymoron, was thought to be particularly brilliant and useful by Theodore Roosevelt after he became Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy. Three ships were authorized for construction, INDIANA BB-1

Demands by Cuban patriots for independence from Spanish rule made U.S. intervention in Cuba a paramount issue in the relations between the United States and Spain from the 1870s to 1898. Sympathy for the Cuban insurgents ran high in America, especially after the savage Ten Years War Weyler y Nicolau , instituted the reconcentrado, or concentration camp, system in 1896; Cuba's rural population was forcibly confined to centrally located garrison towns, where thousands died from disease, starvation, and exposure. Journal and Joseph Pulitzer's New York World, which distorted and slanted the news from Cuba. The U.S. government was also moved by the heavy losses of American investment in Cuba caused by the guerrilla warfare, an appreciation of the strategic importance of the island to Central America and a projected isthmian canal there, and a growing sense of U.S. power in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. There was an unspoken threat of intervention. This grew sharper after the insurgents, refusing a Spanish offer of partial autonomy, determined to fight for full freedom. Although the majority of Americans, including President
