04:00 PM Aug. 03, 2000 PT In a dispute that could test the legal limits for how of personal information stored on publicly available websites is used, a domain name registrar has filed suit against a firm it claims illegally used its customer contact information in an aggressive marketing campaign of unsolicited email and phone calls. Register.com, a New York company that registers Internet domain names, filed suit this week against Verio Inc., a Colorado website developer and hosting firm, charging that the company engaged in "unauthorized commercial use of Register.com's Whois database." Display email but avoid spam
Introduction
This guide will demonstrate how to display an email link on your webpage while avoiding the risk of your address being harvested by spammers robots. It's just basic javascript and very easy to customise. Tested in
Create the javascript
The first step is to define the variables. The following goes into the of your document:
var name = "webmaster";
var address = "domain.com";
var link = "Mail me!";
var subject = "Feedback";
function
To walk throught this (if you are not familiar with javascript): first we define the variables ( var ) we need to make up the link. Each variable has a value, the name variable ( var name) is webmaster, the address variable is your domain, domain.com, the link variable is the link which will be displayed on screen (Mail me!), the subject variable is the subject of the email. You can add or take away variables as you need to, so long as they are reflected in the function... The function basically ties all the variables together to create the email link. "document.write" tells the browser to "write" the following;

Warning: this article is not for the squeamish. It contains graphic descriptions of one of the biggest evils on the internet. If you can face down this evil you can reduce your load of spam by several times. Hold onto your seats and try and keep down your lunch - you are about to learn one of the secrets of how ruthless, unethical and, well, downright evil spammers steal your email address - and what you can do about it. If you have access to your web site's log files, you will quickly find an interesting phenomenon. Your site is being visited a lot more often than you think it is. In fact, if you look closely you may be shocked to find that your HTML files are actually being used to harm you and others. In fact, you may be seeing the footprints left by some of the tools used by unscrupulous spammers to steal your email addresses. Oh wait, let me back up a bit and explain a few things. Each time you visit a web site a record is kept of every page, graphic, sound file, video or anything else that you access (look at or download). This record is called a log file. Each line within the log file is one "hit" (other things are recorded also, but that is not important to this discussion). A "hit" is getting one "thing" from a web site. A "thing" can be an image, an HTML page, a video, a sound file or anything else. In fact, generally when you look at one HTML page you are actually "hitting" the web site many times, once for each file on the page.

      PSINet caught red-handed with spam contract
      By Kieren McCarthy Published Tuesday 7th November 2000 21:18 GMT Stumbling ISP PSINet has owned up to a contract with a sender of bulk unsolicited commercial email - known to you and me as spam. It has long been a suspicion that some ISPs have had illicit contracts with spammers, despite a publicly stated policy against such practices. However, after news site CNet obtained an unsigned copy of a contract between PSINet and spammer Cajunnet, both companies were forced to admit their co-operation. Of course, there's a catchy term for all this: a "pink contract". Being caught red-handed comes as a big embarrassment to PissyNet, which hasn't exactly been in the top 50 growth IT companies recently. Cajunnet was, as you would expect, entirely unrepentant - if perhaps a little annoyed that it would have to find another ISP after having been kicked off by several others for producing too many complaint emails.
