SpamFilter FAQ Tips for Reducing spam email. The use of the JVLNET SpamFilter to automatically delete your spam email is completely at your discretion.
http://www.jvlnet.com/spamfaq.htm
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Q: What is spam?
Spam is another word for "unsolicited" or "junk" email. It is usually bulk email sent from advertisers to entice you to buy a product or service, similar to the junk mail delivered by the postman. Spam is usually sent from a bogus email address and usually sent to a bogus email address using the BCC or "blind carbon copy" method. Most spam can not be traced or replied to. Normally, you would just delete any/all spam received without reading it, just like you toss out junk mail without reading it.
Q: What is the JVLNET SpamFilter?
JVLNET's SpamFilter is a valuable FREE option available to any JVLNET subscriber that uses JVLNET email. It is automatically turned on for you, and is already identifying up to 98% of most spam. The SpamFilter will insert a notation in the Subject of all your spam, and depending on the choices you have made in your JVLNET SpamFilter Control Panel , may automatically delete the spam for you. It will also delete some of the more common email transmitted virus. You can turn your JVLNET SpamFilter "on" or "off" and make other choices by going to your personal JVLNET SpamFilter Control Panel at http://spamsettings.jvlnet.com at anytime.
Q: Why should I keep my JVLNET SpamFilter on?

What To Do About Spam Email
August 2002
One of the most common requests our group receives is for help in stopping unsolicited, "spam" email. This page describes how we handle such requests. If it appears that the unwanted mail originated on the CWRU network, or that a computer connected to the CWRU network propagated the message, please contact us at abuse@case.edu and let us know. We will investigate the matter and see that the situation that caused the problem is remedied. Most often, however, users contact us because they've received unwanted messages from other sources. Unfortunately, there is little we can do in such cases. Three main problems make combating spam difficult:
  • Convenient availability of email addresses in bulk Ease with which message contents are falsified Poor security of many mail servers
  • Convenient availability of email addresses in bulk
The best way to prevent spam is simply to be very careful about who finds out your email address Addresses are also commonly made public when people carelessly send or forward messages to many people at the same time. The result is often that each recipient finds out every other recipient's address. These other recipients may very well forward the message on to still more people, at which point your address has essentially been publicly posted. When individuals or organizations send out such bulk mailings, a complaint is in order

    • Ground-breaking Permission Based Spam Blocker Technology: AllSpamGone is an anti-spam system that doesn't rely on filters, or message rules which delete messages you wanted to see. Instead, if an email arrives from an unknown sender, AllSpamGone thinks it might be spam so it sends out a permission email back to the sender. If that user is a real person (and not some spam program) they simply reply to this registration step, at which point you can choose to accept their first, and subsequent email messages.
    • The Registration Step: Unapproved senders are automatically given the opportunity to register (permission to send you email). If they register, you are notified and can accept their email. They only need to register once! You can also easily preapprove your existing contacts (we have a simple address book import wizard).

    Spam Email Filtering at UW
SPAM has grown into a massive problem— not just at UW but nation-wide. Studies estimate that SPAM represents between 40 and 60 percent of all email. The SPAM problem is a difficult one to solve. Although SPAM filtering software is well developed, even the most sophisticated software occasionally misreads some legitimate messages, treating them like SPAM. Techniques used by spammers to evade SPAM filtering software are constantly evolving, as are the rules used to detect the SPAM. Users can expect to see some ebb and flow in the proportion of SPAM which is identified by filtering as spammers try new approaches, followed by updates to the filtering software to address those approaches. The Division of Information Technology has reviewed various software alternatives to help reduce the flow of SPAM into the campus community. Based on available support, features and cost, an IT Anti-SPAM committee has chosen PureMessage from ActiveState to help curb the SPAM that plagues university email inboxes.

Online Fraud has grown a distrubing 79% in 2003, very likely to more than double again in 2004. With the prevalence of spam filters working very effectively to protect against 'buy this', and 'enlarge that' emails such as the Spam Inspector, spam has begun its transformation from simply annoying to highly dangerous, including Viruses that take over computers to send spam, and the newest and most disturbing trend being “Phishing”. What is Phising
Phishing is a technique that is currently being used by spammers, or more appropriately “scammers”, to obtain, or “fish” for, private information of email consumers, particularly taking advantage of home email users who do not have elaborate firewalls protecting them. Phishers are most commonly mining for bank account numbers, social security numbers, and credit card information. How Phising Works…
A phisher will send out an email disguised to mimic a legitimate email from a familiar vendor such as Amazon, eBay, PayPal, Citibank, etc. The notice requests that you, the innocent victim, validate your accounting information to help keep their records up to date. The email will then provide a link to click to make these so-called required changes. Like the email, the link will have the same look and feel and maybe even same name as the professed vendor’s domain – easily fooling thousands of unsuspecting people. Within hours, minutes and maybe even seconds of clicking “send” your most vital information falls into hands of Internet scammers and you have been what phishers call, “spoofed”. Once this happens, your savings, credit line, and identity can become compromised, and it could be very costly and time consuming for YOU to repair the damage.

With the massive amount of information and speed the Internet is able to handle, communication has been revolutionized with email and other online communication systems. Users are able to send messages across the globe in seconds, and to many people at once. Unfortunately, many computer users have abused the technology used to drive these communications, by sending out thousands and thousands of emails with little or no purpose other than to increase traffic and decrease bandwidth. A rough definition of spam is any unsolicited email sent against the interest and knowledge of the recipient, usually with no intention of a response other than to visit a website or sell a product. These emails are usually sent out in large numbers to many recipients. However, it is important to differentiate between unsolicited email which can be labeled as spam and solicited email. Solicited email my have the same goals as unsolicited email, but you may receive a solicited email that the sender has deemed to be in your interest, or related to a previous interest. Spam email, however, is usually sent without any knowledge or consideration of the recipients interests, and is sent out only with the desired result in mind. Even worse, devious and moral-less individuals use spam email to throw objectable material in front of good natured people in hopes of corrupting their minds with their exploitation of humans and objects for a profit.
