Gurpegi doping ban upheld in Spain
Carlos Gurpegi (left) in action against Barcelona Story Tools MADRID, Spain (Reuters) Spain's sports council upheld a two-year ban on Athletic Bilbao midfielder Carlos Gurpegi on Monday after a positive test for nandrolone. Gurpegi, who has always denied knowingly taking any banned substance, tested positive after the first match of the 2002-03 season. The player, now 23, was originally suspended on February 15, 2003 while the case was being investigated, but the provisional ban was lifted in April following an appeal by the club. A month later, Spain's Football Federation handed him a two-year suspension, but Bilbao lodged another appeal that allowed Gurpegi to carry on playing. Monday's ruling is unlikely to be the end of the long-running saga. Athletic Bilbao immediately announced that they would appeal the decision in court. Bilbao officials said in March this year that studies the club had commissioned from the University of Extremadura had shown that the player produced the substance naturally and had not taken it from an external source.

Two killed in Spain blasts
Story Tools MADRID, Spain A married couple has died and a father and son have been injured in two separate explosions in the northwest of Spain. The incidents happened in the space of an hour early Tuesday just a mile from each other in the suburban part of the port city Vigo in the Galicia region. In the first explosion the 12-year-old son touched a package left at their gate as he left home with his father. The youngster is in a serious condition after undergoing surgery for face and abdominal injuries, an official at the Interior Ministry said. The father was slightly injured. The second blast, at about 9.30 a.m. (0830 GMT), killed the couple when the wife touched a rubbish bag. The victims were not related. Terrorist action was initially ruled out as a motive, with the emphasis instead on rivalries between drugs or money laundering gangs. But Interior Ministry director Arsenio Fernandez de Mesa later said nothing was being ruled out, The Associated Press reported.

6 ministers out in Spain reshuffle
The opposition has criticised Aznar for enacting laws without their support MADRID, Spain Six ministers have been removed from Spain's cabinet in Jose Maria Aznar's biggest reshuffle since becoming prime minister six years ago. Foreign Minister Josep Pique is being replaced by Ana Palacio, head of the European Parliament's civil rights, justice and interior committee and MEP since 1994. Palacio will take over talks with his British counterpart, Jack Straw, over the disputed UK colony of Gibraltar. Pique and Straw were due to meet on Friday in Madrid, but it is up to Palacio whether to keep the appointment. Pique now has the science and technology portfolio and will oversee the telecoms sector. Another change is the replacement of ex-Interior Minister Mariano Rajoy with former Justice Minister Angel Acebes.

    Spain
This name properly signifies the whole peninsula which forms the south-western extremity of Europe. Since the political separation of Portugal, however, the name has gradually come to be restricted to the largest of the four political divisions of the Peninsula: (1) Spain; (2) Portugal; (3) the Republic of Andorra; (4) the British possession of Gibraltar , at the southern extremity. The etymology of the name Spain ) is uncertain. Some derive it from the Punic word tsepan , "rabbit", basing the opinion on the evidence of a coin of Galba, on which Spain is represented with a rabbit at her feet, and on Strabo, who calls Spain "the land of rabbits". It is said that the Phoenicians and Carthaginians found the country overrun with these rodents, and so named it after them. Another derivation is from sphan , "north", from the circumstance that the country was north of Carthage, just as the Greeks called Italy Hesperia , because it was their western boundary, or the land of sunset ( Hespera ). Again, some Bascophiles would assert a Basque origin for the name of Spain:

SKETCHING HOLIDAYS IN THE SOUTH FRANCE
For our last trip which runs from September 27th to October 11th, 2004 we will be travelling to Tuscany, Italy. This area with all the history, warm colours and artistic atmosphere is a dream-come-true for artists and those who appreciate art. We have visited this region a few times so know our way around but each time find new places which never cease to amaze.
The International Art Club, a business owned and operated by Michel and Marion DesRochers in Sooke, British Columbia, has now been in operation for ten years. The Club organizes fully escorted holidays to the South of France, Spain and Italy.
Although primarily focused on artists, the Club does not preclude non-artists from coming too. If you appreciate beautiful scenery, good food and would like to experience a different culture and lifestyle, then this is the trip for you and who knows, you may be inspired to pick up a brush and start a whole new phase in your life!
Group holidays are now more and more popular as they allow you to travel alone with the added security of being with other people.
A lot has changed in the ten years we have been travelling, not to mention the heightened security at airports which, although can be tedious, is very much to our advantage. The year 2002 saw the introduction of the Euro into the countries we visit. The one type of currency makes it much easier for converting back into dollars. The only down side is that with every currency change prices have a habit of going up - never the other way - it is called "rounding up"! In addition the Euro over the past two years has gained considerable strength which has resulted in a noticeable rise in prices. However, it doesn't cost anything to look at wonderful views and magnificent buildings.

Pope visits Spain, calls for peace
Aznar kisses the hand of Pope John Paul II at Madrid's Barajas airport. Story Tools MADRID (CNN) Pope John Paul II brought a message of peace Saturday on his arrival in Spain, where President Jose Maria Aznar was one of the staunchest allies of the U.S.-led war against Iraq. Aznar, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were among the dignitaries to greet the aging pontiff on his fifth visit to Spain, the 99th trip outside Italy of his papacy but only the first in the last nine months. "My wish is for everyone to have the peace that only God through Jesus Christ can give," he said at Barajas Airport outside Madrid, "peace which is the fruit of justice, the truth, of love, of solidarity, the peace which people can benefit from when they follow the law of God, the peace which makes people feel like brothers." The pope, who turns 83 on May 18, is to meet with Aznar later Saturday and will conduct an open-air Mass on Sunday. Church officials expect a million people will attend to see the pope canonize five 20th century Spaniards. The future was clearly on the pope's mind during his brief opening remarks, calling on Spain and other European nations to return to their Christian roots as they forged a new European union.

    Judge shot dead in Spain
BILBAO, Spain (CNN) A Spanish judge was shot and killed in a suburb of the Basque city of Blibao on Wednesday morning, police told CNN. Judge Jose Maria Lidon Corbi was shot in Getxo at about 7:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. EST). "A judge from the provincial court of Vizcaya has died, several people shot him when he was getting into his car," a spokesman for the Basque police force said. EXTRA INFORMATION In-Depth: Basque conflict - violence in Spain The attack follows a major car bomb attack in Madrid on Tuesday which injured 99 people but was reported to have missed its intended target. That blast was blamed on the armed Basque separatist group ETA. ETA has killed about 800 people in a campaign of bombings and shootings spanning 30 years to back its demand for Basque self-determination.
