St Martin's Because of its central position on the Iberian peninsula between Europe and Africa, Spain was invaded frequently. Roman rule was established in the third century BC and was followed by Muslim and Arab invasions. Spain had no choice but to follow the dominant religion and principles of their conquerors. Definite influences in culture and language have remained from the days of these early settlers and are still evident in modern Spain. After a bloody war between the Nationalists and the Republicans, which ended in 1939, General Franco began his tyrannical fascist rule. This 36 year period crippled Spain economically and cut it off from the rest of the world. However, when Franco died in 1975, the monarchy was restored and King Juan Carlos took the throne. To this day, Spain continues to have a monarchy, but all decisions affecting the country are taken by Parliament. The royal family are very popular with the Spanish public and they support many humanitarian and moral issues. Central Parliament is called

SITUATED on the 40th parallel (on the Castilian Meseta), Madrid occupies the geographical center of the Iberian Peninsula. The city stands at a height of 2,200 feet above sea level, its buildings rooted in the sandy soil of some low hills. It is sufficient to say that the reproductions of its luminous skies gave world fame to the best painter of all times: Velázquez. The beautiful skies of Madrid have since been described as "Velasqueños". Madrid enjoys more cloudless days than almost any other city in Europe. The average atmospheric pressure is 706 mm. The air is purified in the peaks and pine groves of the nearby Guadarrama mountain range. Spring in Madrid is a season of bright sunshine and cool breezes. In autumn there are those clear blue Velázquez skies and the air is warm. King Philip III, born in Madrid, made it the capital of Spain in 16'6, at a time when "Don Quixote" had already become a familiar figure in the world. Precisely one year previously, its first edition was printed on the presses of Juan de la Cuesta, in the popular street of Atocha. Madrid has its small river, the Manzanares, which contains little water but is spanned by several historic bridges. All the main roads of Spain radiate from the "Kilometer 0" mark. Madrid has the railroad station: Chamartín and Atocha, as well as the South bus station. You may reach Madrid by air through the Madrid-Barajas International Airport. Madrid's Puerta del Sol is lively and popular and is the terminus for all the underground railway communications (Metro) and many of the buses.

Synagogues are built in the Empire's major cities. Castile is used for pastureland, as it will be used by the Visigoths and Muslims until the Christian conquest ends the wars and agriculture can be practiced safely. 551: The Visigoths establish their kingdom on the peninsula, making Toledo their capital. 570-636: Isidore of Seville writes Etymologies (or Origins ), a thorough enclopedia of in Latin, mostly based on Greek and Roman works. 587: The Visigoth King is converted to Roman Catholicism. Sefarad is a Hebrew word meaning Spain . So, in the strictest sense of the word the Sephardim (plural of Sephardi) are the Jews who came from the Iberian peninsula . Today however the word Sephardim has taken a much wider meaning and includes Jewish Communities in North Africa, Iraq (Babylon), Syria, Greece, Turkey and most Jews who are not Ashkenazim. The word Ashkenazi has had a similar broadening of its definition. Arising from a Hebrew word meaning " German " it has taken on a broader definition that includes not only German Jews but those of Eastern Europe and Russia as well. Today the distinction between Sephardim and Ashkenazim is primarily one of differing traditions due to their backgrounds. Differing languages ladino and arabic vs yiddish and polish ), religious
