In the 11th cent. B.C. , the Phoenicians settled there and founded several coastal colonies, notably Gadir (now and, supposedly, the inland town of Tartessus, which became the capital of a flourishing kingdom (sometimes identified with the biblical Tarshish ). Greeks and Carthaginians came in the 6th cent. B.C. ; the Carthaginians were expelled (3d cent. B.C. ) by the Romans, who included S Spain in the province of Baetica. The emperors Trajan, Hadrian, and Theodosius were born in the region. Visigoths ended Roman rule in the 5th cent. A.D. , and in 711 the Moors , crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, established there the center of their western emirate (see ). History of Spain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
This is the history of Spain . See also the history of Europe and history of present-day nations and states It is traditional (only since the 19th century) to start the history of modern Spain with the Visigoth kingdom. Although it is debatable whether there is continuity between it and the Kingdom of Castilla and Aragon after the 15th century, a discussion of modern Spain would be incomplete without a mention of th eVisigoth Kingdom. Accordingly, both it and Al Andalus have their own sections in this article, but should have full-blown articles of their own. The history of Spain just before the Visigoths belongs to the Roman Empire article. Before the Roman Empire, the Iberian Peninsula was never politically unified, see Preroman Iberia for a discussion of the indigenous groups and the colonies established by Eastern Mediterranean civilizations. Discussion of earlier periods probably belongs under prehistoric Europe Table of contents 1 Visigothic Spain (5th-8th centuries) 2 Al-Andalus (8th-15th centuries) 3 Reconquista (8th-15th centuries) 4 Spain under the Habsburgs (16th-17th centuries) ... edit

The second half of the first millennium AD in Europe is sometimes referred to as the dark ages. In some ways that's a misnomer. Although in some parts of Europe it seemed that the beacon of civilization had indeed been extinguished, in other parts, notably Spain, things were far from dark.
In Spain the candle of knowledge was kept burning by the Arab conquerers called Moors. Not only did they possess a vast body of knowledge based on their own learning, they had also become the custodians of much of the earlier knowledge from the Greek philosophers including those of Alexandria such as Ptolemy.
The Spanish occupation by the Moors began in 711 AD when a Berber Muslim army, under their leader Tariq ibn-Ziyad, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar from northern Africa and invaded the Iberian peninsula. Roderick, the last of the Visigoth kings of Spain, was defeated at the Battle of Río Barbate and by 719 AD the Moors had conquered the entire area from the coast to the Pyrenees.

The Romans came to Spain in 206 BC.
Pleased with the wealth of the Iberian Peninsula, they stayed for 700 years. In 200 years they conquered Spain and divided it into provinces, with Baetica corresponding roughly to what is now Andalusia. They built cities with feudal lords amassing wealthy estates by exporting olive oil and wheat to Rome. Baetica became one of the most prosperous of Rome’s provinces with a thriving Ibero-Roman culture. The Visigoths followed the Romans and continued to assert their way of life until the Moors conquered them in AD 711.
One of the first cities founded in Spain by the Romans was Italica. Scipio Africanus established the city in 206 BC, and it blossomed rapidly as a military headquarters and a cultural centre. At its peak in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD Italica supported a population of several thousand. Both Emperors Trajan and Hadrian were born here. Hadrian eventually bestowed imperial largesse on the city during his reign in the 2nd century AD, adding marble temples and important buildings. Italica’s amphitheater seated 25,000 spectators and was the third largest in the Roman Empire.

    A SHORT HISTORY OF SPAIN
From this short introduction to the history of Spain, the reader may get a glimpse at the importance of the Spanish horse during the dynamic phase of expansion to the New World. The horses from Castilla of the late 15th and early 16th century formed the foundation of today's South and North American horse population. These same war horses were the ancestors of the Andalusian and Lusitano horse. For more detailed information about the breeds of Iberian ancestry, please visit our bookstore at www.equibooks.com INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF SPAIN What makes a Spaniard unique within Western civilization? Why is Spain so different from other European countries? Some people look for a simple geographic answer. But the fact is that its geography has not changed that much since the days when Spain, as so many other European lands, was but a piece in the grand imperial mosaic put together by Rome. This common background persisted for several centuries as northern European tribes - Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Franks - overran southern Europe and established themselves there. What really made the difference was the arrival in Spain of the Arabs early in the 8th century. From that moment on, Spains development took on a distinctive character. While it is true that the Arabs also reached up into France, they were soon thrown back. In Spain it was a different story. The Moslems conquered much of the Iberian peninsula and stayed on for nearly eight centuries.

    Jewish History Sourcebook:
The Expulsion from Spain, 1492 CE
In the spring of 1492, shortly after the Moors were driven out of Granada, Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain expelled all the Jews from their lands and thus, by a stroke of the pen, put an end to the largest and most distinguished Jewish settlement in Europe. The expulsion of this intelligent, cultured, and industrious class was prompted only in part by the greed of the king and the intensified nationalism of the people who had just brought the crusade against the Muslim Moors to a glorious close. The real motive was the religious zeal of the Church, the Queen, and the masses. The official reason given for driving out the Jews was that they encouraged the Marranos to persist in their Jewishness and thus would not allow them to become good Christians. The following account gives a detailed and accurate picture of the expulsion and its immediate consequences for Spanish Jewry. It was written in Hebrew by an Italian Jew in April or May, 1495. And in the year 5252 [1492], in the days of King Ferdinand, the Lord visited the remnant of his people a second time [the first Spanish visitation was in 1391], and exiled them. After the King had captured the city of Granada from the Moors, and it had surrendered to him on the 7th [2d] of January of the year just mentioned, he ordered the expulsion of all the Jews in all parts of his kingdom-in the kingdoms of Castile, Catalonia, Aragon, Galicia, Majorca, Minorca, the Basque provinces, the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, and the kingdom of Valencia. Even before that the Queen had expelled them from the kingdom of Andalusia [1483]
