History
Prehistorical Times
The oldest historical findings made in Spain date of about 30000 to 50000 b.C. Among the most important remains of this period are the caves Cova Negra Játiva ) and Piñar (Granada).
The Celt-Iberian Spain
The Iberian population probably arrived to the peninsula from the north of Africa. Tartessos , probably an iberian tribe, founded an important kingdom of high culture in the valley of Guadalquivir river, in the south of Spain. By 1200 b.C. Celtic tribes entered the peninsula from the north, mixing up with Iberians and so generating the celt-iberian race. The origin of the bask race living in the north of the country is uncertain, but many historians suppose that it goes back to a pre-iberian population.
Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians
By 1100 b.C. Phoenicians arrived to the peninsula and founded colonies, the most important of which was Gadir (today's Cadiz). Also Greeks founded colonies in southern Spain and along the Mediterranean coast.
During the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthago Carthaginians invaded Spain and conquered large parts of it. Their most important colonies were the island Ibiza and Cartagena, the "new Carthago".
Romans and Goths
After Rome had defeated Carthago definitely, Romans also invaded the colonies in Spain, and ended up conquering the entire peninsula. The province

History
At the crossroads between Europe and Africa, the Iberian Peninsula has always been a target for invading races and civilisations. The Romans arrived in the 3rd century BC but took two centuries to subdue the peninsula. Gradually Roman laws, languages and customs were adopted. In 409 AD, Roman Hispania was invaded by a massive contingent of Germanic tribes and by 419 a Visigothic kingdom had been established. The Visigoths ruled until 711, when the Muslims crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and defeated Roderick, the last Goth king. By 714, the Muslim armies had occupied the entire peninsula, apart from the mountainous regions of northern Spain. The Muslim occupation of southern Spain (which the Spanish called Al-Andalus) was to last almost 800 years. During this period, the arts and sciences prospered, new crops and agricultural techniques were introduced and palaces, mosques, schools, gardens and public baths were built. In 722, at Covadonga in northern Spain, a small army under the Visigothic king Pelayo inflicted the first defeat on the Muslims. Symbolically, this battle marked the beginning of the Reconquista, the reconquest of Spain by the Christians. By the end of the 13th century, Castilla and Arag³n had emerged as Christian Spain's two main powers, and in 1469 these two kingdoms were united by the marriage of Isabel, princess of Castilla, to Fernando, heir to the throne of Arag³n. Known as the Catholic Monarchs, they united all of Spain and laid the foundations for the golden age. In 1478, they established the notoriously ruthless Spanish Inquisition, expelling and executing thousands of Jews and other non-Christians. In 1482, they besieged Granada, and 10 years later the last Muslim king surrendered to them, marking the long-awaited end of the Reconquista.

    Spain History
Spain's history was shaped by many forces - the Celts, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Germanic tribes all had a strong hand in influencing the people of the Iberian Peninsula, of which Spain is a part. Perhaps the greatest artistic and intellectual ferment in Spain, though, was under the Moors, the Islamic conquerors who crossed the Straits of Gibraltar in the early 700s and ruled the land for more than seven centuries. This period of history was characterized by a diffusion of culture between the Christian and Arab worlds, interspersed with spells of fierce fighting. Universities, unique architecture and an age of religious toleration were all fostered by many of the Islamic rulers, most notably those of the Caliphate of Cordoba in the 10th century. After a protracted struggle with Christian forces, the Moors were finally ousted in 1492. That same year, Columbus crossed the Atlantic under the Spanish flag and revealed the New World to Europe. The next century saw the apogee of Spain's power and influence throughout the world: Theirs was the first worldwide empire. In addition to their adventures far afield, Spanish kings controlled all or parts of what are now Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy and France. Imperial ambitions brought on imperial excess, however, and adventurism finally sapped the strength of Spain. The country went into a decline that saw it lose nearly all of its colonial possessions by the late 1800s.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... SPAIN Spain's roots date back thousands of years when the Phoenicians traded at the country's Mediterranean ports and the population included Celts, Basques, and Iberians. The Romans arrived in 200 B.C. and their rule lasted for nearly 4 centuries, until the Visigoths invaded. Christianity conquered the Visigoths (they converted) but the Berber-Arab North African Moors captured the peninsula in 711 and led to an unprecedented period of culture and civilization. Slowly but surely, however, the Christians reconquered the region and after over 700 years, the last Moorish city, Granada, fell in 1492. The reign of Isabella and Ferdinand brought exploration of the New World to the fore (they supported the voyages of Christopher Columbus) but included the horrors of the Inquisition (begun in 1478) which cost untold thousands of Jews their lives. All the Jews were expelled in 1492. A decade later, so were the Muslims. By 1700, Spain had reached the apogee of its power as a conqueror: South America, Central America, Mexico, western North America, the Philippines and other areas of Africa and Asia were in Spanish hands. By the 19th century, Spain had lost nearly all its major possessions. It weakness was underscored by its humiliating defeat at the hands of the United States in the Spanish-American War in 1898. Civil war in the late 1930s cost Spain dearly: it was help in the grip of dictatorship for nearly the next 40 years under General Francisco Franco. Only after his death in 1975, did the country return to its monarchist roots with the ascension to the Spanish throne of Juan Carlos. Unexpectedly, King Juan Carlos has succeeded in reforming Spain and bringing it fully into the European family of nations.

    SPAIN: History
WAIS has a special interest in the way history is taught. From Barcelona, José Manuel de Prada reports: "Some schoolmasters, in Catalonia teach the Spanish Civil War to their students as a war of the rest of Spain against Catalonia. And many people believe that Catalans suffered under Franco more that the rest of the people. In both cases, it is utter nonsense. Another problem with the teaching of history (and geography) in Spain is that so much time is devoted to teach local geography and history that students end up knowing very little about world history and geography". RH: Yes, this is the danger of local history. I suppose the problem is even worse in the Basque provinces. Ronald Hilton - 9/24/02

[Upload image] The Iberian Peninsula has been occupied for many millennia. Some of Europe's most impressive Paleolithic cultural sites are located there-the famous caves at Altamira contain spectacular paintings which date from about 15 000-25 000 years ago. The Basques are the first identifiable people of the peninsula and are the oldest surviving group in Europe. Iberians arrived from North Africa during a more recent period. Beginning in the ninth century BC Phoenicians Greeks Carthaginians and Celts entered the Iberian Peninsula followed by the Romans who arrived in the second century BC. Spain's present language religion and laws stem from the Roman period. Although the Visigoths arrived in the fifth century AD the last Roman strongholds along the southern coast did not fall until the seventh century AD. In 711 North African Moors sailed across the straits swept into Andalusia and within a few years pushed the Visigoths up the peninsula to the Cantabrian Mountains. The Reconquest-efforts to drive out the Moors-lasted until 1492. By 1512 the unification of present-day Spain was complete. During the 16th century Spain became the most powerful nation in Europe due to the immense wealth derived from its presence in the Americas. But a series of long costly wars and revolts capped by the defeat by the English of the "Invincible Armada" in 1588 began a steady decline of Spanish power in Europe. Controversy over succession to the throne consumed the country during the 18th and 19th centuries leading to occupation by France in the early 1800s.
