Spain is situated in the far west of Europe and forms the largest part of the Iberian peninsula, which it shares with Portugal. Spain has 4,964 km of coast-line. In the North, Spain is bordered by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; in the East by the Mediterranean Ocean; in the South by the Atlantic Ocean, and in the West by Portugal. Spain also rules the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in Morocco. The landscape of Spain is varied and ranges from the wet green lands of Cantabria and Galicia to the Almerian deserts and the rugged Pyrenees mountain ranges. After Switzerland, Spain is the most mountainous country in Europe. The Canary Islands are dry and barren because they are volcanic, and the sand on the beaches in Lanzarote is crushed black lava. Spain has only seven navigable rivers, the longest of which is the Ebro stretching for 910 km. Northern Spain, which includes the Basque country, is wild and sparsely populated. The east coast of Spain is very popular with tourists because of its white sandy beaches along the Costa Brava and also the stretches of beach on the Costa del Sol. In the summer the beaches can get very crowded because they are one of the most popular European holiday destinations. More than 52 million people visit Spain each year.

Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook Spain Introduction Spain Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing concerns are Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

History and Geography of the Camino de Santiago in Spain The Camino de Santiago (or the Saint James Way in Spain) and the 2004 Holy Year Santiago de Compostela, in northwest Spain, emerged centuries ago as one of most important pilgrimage destinations in Europe, even rivaling Rome at times. Pilgrims who were unable to travel to the Holy Land to pay homage to their Christian faith often chose to go to Santiago instead. The history and myth of this pilgrimage is one of the most fascinating stories in Christendom. St. James the Greater was the brother of John the Evangelist. The brothers were converted to Christianity by St. John the Baptist. James was martyred in 44 A.D. in Palestine but that was just the beginning of his story. Although no historical records exist to place James in Spain, tradition has it that before his death he traveled to Iberia as a part of his evangelical mission. Centuries later, in 813 A.D. James' remains were thought to have been found in Galicia, in northwest Spain. This came at a time when the small Christian community of northern Spain was just beginning its struggle against the advancement of Islam throughout Iberia. A small shrine was built in honor of St. James and he was raised to the status of patron saint of Spain. St. James rose to mythical status as he was sighted on the battlefield in the fight against the Moors. So widespread was the myth of St. James among Spaniards that he was sighted as late as the 16th century helping Spain to conquer the New World!

    Introduction Spain
is a common destination for the package holiday trade, but there is much more to this country than sitting on a beach. Move away from the holiday complexes down the coasts and in minutes you are in a different land, unaffected by the dubious benefits of the mass tourism that came to Spain in the sixties. During the long years of Franco's reign Spain fell behind the rest of Europe's post war development, (which makes it cheaper to visit than some european countries) but once Franco died and democracy arrived, Spain started to party, and they have never stopped! For the walker this country offers high mountains in all parts of the country. In high summer the temperature is likely to be hot (at least in valleys) so it may be best to avoid the hottest months.
Click on the titles or on the map to look at some possible walking holiday destinations.
    Geography and weather

Spain is a high plateau or tableland (the meseta) with ranges of mountains (Cordillera Cantabrica and Pyrenees) across the north dividing it from France and in the south, the spanish mainland's highest mountains, the Sierra Nevada. Much of the interior is above 900 metres above sea level and many mountain ranges rise above 1800 metres. The capital, Madrid is in the centre of the peninsula. There is a strong regionalist culture, especially in Catalonia (capital Barcelona) and the Basque country in the north.
