Explore Spain with idealspain.com The seven islands that make up the Canary Islands are located more than 1,000 kilometres south of the Iberian peninsula and only 115 kilometres from the nearest point of the African coast. Their volcanic origin and their special position in the Atlantic Ocean have given the islands a unique character. The resulting landscape is unlike any other found in Europe or Africa. The seven most important pieces of land are Lanzarote Fuerteventura Gran Canaria , La Palma, El Hierro Tenerife and Gomera. Although local culture is encouraged, the residents of the islands speak Spanish, look Spanish and feel Spanish.
