ADVERTISING INFORMATION Madrid - Culture "Madrid has turned into the fable of Europe. It is called the capital of joy and of contentment. Describing our city in such terms means that it is welcoming, cordial, free, peaceful and universal". This definition of how the capital of Spain is today, which was taken from a proclamation of the best-loved Mayor of Madrid, summarizes the prevailing atmosphere in the city, by cultural exaltation, the vitality of the cultural and spiritual movement in Madrid, which has found a happy as well as famous outlet in the so-called "movida" or festive spirit of the city. Nobody is a foreigner in Madrid. The capital has always known how to be nice and amiable. Its environment, its bustle and happiness to be alive are contagious. Anybody who arrives in Madrid and remains in the city for some time finds it difficult to leave. Its forcefulness and personality turn Madrid into an unforgettable city, and its plentiful resources of interest to tourism - nature, art, history - are rounded off extraordinarily well by a series of cities in its surroundings which are full of sights of historic interest, some of which have been included by the UNESCO in the list of places considered "world heritage": Ávila, Segovia, Toledo, as well as the Monastery of El Escorial. All of them lie within about 100 km. from the square La Puerta del Sol.

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, SPAIN - In this city's dark and brooding Romanesque cathedral, midday mass drew to a close. Several monks in red cassocks carried before the congregation of pilgrims and tourists an enormous silver censer hung from a long pole. At the altar, the priest made the sign of the cross over the botafumeiro , which was as large as a wood stove, then he tossed great spoonfuls of incense into its glowing red belly. Finally, the botafumeiro was tied to a thick rope hung from the cathedral's high apse. With a sudden yank from one of the monks, it rose up and began swinging from side to side like a great smoking pendulum. The arc grew wider and higher, and filled the church with a sweet-smelling fog. Perfume For the Pilgrims During the Middle Ages, the faithful who arrived at Santiago for the blessing of St. James the Apostle had traveled in great hardship from across Europe. They were more concerned about the state of their souls than the smell on their bodies. In those days, incense was more than a religious offering; it was a giant air freshener. Santiago remains a popular destination with Catholic pilgrims at the end of the 20th century, though today's breed has little practical need for any cleansing ritual. For them, the botafumeiro is simply a striking step on a deeply religious visit that concludes behind the cathedral's altar when they embrace a gilded statue of St. James.

HOLIDAYS OF SPAIN
Running of the Bulls July 7-14 In Pamplona, Spain, the second week of July is dedicated to the Running of the Bulls. The "Encierro" or the Running of the Bulls is the most popular event of the Fiesta of San Fermin. This event has given the Fiesta world-wide fame. The San Fermin festival began in 1591 when its purpose was purely practical, to move the bulls to the arena. Then only a handful of daring souls ran in front of the bulls. The tradition was immortalized in Ernest Hemingway's novel The Sun Also Ries in 1926, after which time many more foreigners began attending the festival and running with the bulls. Now, hundreds of thousands of people, dancing to traditional pipe bands, pack into the center of Pamplona to kick off Spain's most famous bull-running fiesta in honor of the Navarre capital's patron saint, San Fermin. At 8 am every morning of the festival, the running of the bulls takes place. The bulls are let loose from the corral at one end of town and herded through the streets to the stadium, the Plaza de Toro. The length of the run is about half a mile, and usually lasts from two to three minutes. The runners who gather at the bottom of Santo Domingo, which is the starting line, are crowded together as they sing to the image of San Fermin, placed on the wall and decorated with scarves. The song goes: "We ask San Fermin, as our Patron, to guide us through the Bull Run and give us his blessing."

118. Muslim Spain And European Culture
Muslim spain and European culture. Dean Derhak. Much of what we are today can find it s roots in the once great Moorish culture of spain. é ?ean Derhak.
http://www.sunnah.org/history/moors.htm
Muslim Spain and European Culture Dean Derhak When you think of European culture, one of the first things that comes to mind is the renaissance. Many of the roots of European culture can be traced back to that glorious time of art, science, commerce and architecture. But, long before the renaissance there was a place of humanistic beauty in Muslim Spain. Not only was it artistic, scientific and commercial but also tolerant and poetic. Moors, as the Spaniards call the Muslims, populated Spain for nearly 700 years. As you'll see, it was their civilization that brought Europe out of the dark ages and ushered in the renaissance. Their influences still live with us today. Back during the eighth century, Europe was still knee-deep in the Medieval period. That's not the only thing they were knee-deep in. In his book, " The Day The Universe Changed ," the historian James Burke describes how the typical European townspeople lived: "The inhabitants threw all their refuse into the drains in the center of the narrow streets. The stench must have been overwhelming, though it appears to have gone virtually unnoticed. Mixed with excrement and urine would be the soiled reeds and straw used to cover the dirt floors. (p. 32) This squalid society was organized under a feudal system and had little that would resemble a commercial economy. Along with other restrictions, the Catholic Church forbade the lending of money - which didn't help get things booming much. "Anti-Semitism, previously rare, began to increase. Money lending, which was forbidden by the Church, was permitted under Jewish law." (Burke, 1985, p. 32) Jews worked to develop a currency although they were heavily persecuted for it. Medieval Europe was a miserable lot, which ran high in illiteracy, superstition, barbarism and filth.
