A Note on Tainos: Whither Progress?
Northeast Indian Quarterly, pp. 66-77
Fall, 1990
Author's note: An appreciation is due John Mohawk, who contributed to an early version of this article. References in the body of the text refer to the Select Bibliography which follows this article. All ilIustrations except the photograph on page 76 are taken from Onelio Jorge Cardoso, Los Indocubanos. Havana: Gente Nueva, 1982. Taino culture was dominant throughout the Caribbean, a sea and island world that was in turn cradle of Taino civilization. In agriculture, seafaring and cosmology, Ciboney and Guanahatabey (western Cuba), Macorix and/or Ciguayo (Bohio) and even Carib (Lesser Antilles) all followed the material and much of the psycho-spiritual framework of the Taino. The original Caribbeans spoke Arawak. The people of the Arawak language family still comprise one of the more widespread American Indigenous cultures, with relatively large kinship nations in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America. Throughout the Caribbean, usually in remote mountain ranges and coastal promontories, remnant groups and communities of Taino-Arawak and Carib descendants survive to the present. Aspects of the animistic and material culture of the Taino-Arawak have been adopted by the mestizo populations of the Caribbean and are interwoven into the Euro-African fabric of the islands' folk universe. The word Taino meant "men of the good," and from most indications the Tainos were good. Coupled to the lush and hospitable islands over millennium, and a half, the indigenous people of "La Taina" developed a culture where the human personality was gentle. Among the Taino at the time of contact, by all accounts, generosity and kindness were dominant values. Among the Taino peoples, as with most indigenous lifeways, the physical culture was geared toward a sustainable interaction with the natural surroundings. The Taino's culture has been designated as "primitive" by western scholarship, yet it prescribed a lifeway that strove to feed all the people, and a spirituality that respected, in ceremony most of their main animal and food sources, as well as the natural forces like climate, season and weather. The Taino lived respectfully in a bountiful place and so their nature was bountiful. (Jane 1930)

Eating out in Spain is relatively cheap and meals are usually substantial instead of gourmet. The Spanish tradition of tapas is a good way to sample the local food. Tapas are small dishes of snacks which are served anytime especially in small bars. They cover all types of foods from seafood to vegetables. Many Spanish people make an evening of hopping from bar to bar trying different tapas. Another of Spain's favourites is Serrano Ham . Spain is famous for its fish delecasies and simply must be sampled, especially if you get to coastal areas. Paella has long been a Spanish favourite, based on either meat or seafood. Every region in Spain has it's own specialities. The Spanish tend to eat traditional continental breakfasts, a light lunch and an evening meal, late. See more about Spanish

Andalucia is probably one of the best known regions of Spain as this dry, mountainous region embraces the Costa del Sol . The region covers 17.3% of Spanish territory, 87,268 km² in total, making it the largest single region, with an area greater than countries such as Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria. The landscape is as diverse as its culture. From the warm Guadalquivir valley to the low mountain areas and volcanic landscapes such as the Tabernas Desert. The Andalucian shoreline consists of 900km of coastline and some of the finest resorts in Spain. And within 40 minutes of the sandy beach, you can be skiing at the famous resort of Sierra Nevada with its 3,400m peaks. 50% of Andalucia is mountainous with 30% being at an altitude of more than 600m.

Country Info Spain Introduction Spain General Data Spain Maps Spain Culture ... Spain Time and Date Spain Culture Back to Top Changes in Spain's population reflected this transition quite clearly. Falling birth rates and increased life expectancy combined to produce a rapidly aging population that grew at an extremely slow pace. Spain also experienced massive shifts in the location of its people. Between 1951 and 1981, more than 5 million individuals left the poverty of rural and small-town Spain. Many headed for the more prosperous countries of Western Europe, but the more significant flow was from farm and village to Spain's exploding cities, especially Madrid, Barcelona, and Bilbao. In social values, Spain began to resemble its West European neighbors to the north. The status of women, for example, was one of the most notable of these changes, as women began to figure more prominently in education, politics, and the work force generally. Closely associated with these changes were a number of other social characteristics including a more liberal stance on abortion, contraception, divorce, and the role of the large and extended family. The Roman Catholic Church, long a dominant power in Spanish life, opposed these developments, but as Spain became a more materialistic and more secular society, the church's ability to determine social mores and policies was strikingly eroded. Spain also underwent major changes in its educational system. In 1970 Spanish law made education free and compulsory through the age of fourteen; the challenge in the 1980s was to provide the resources necessary to fulfill this obligation. Although the schools enrolled essentially all the school-age population and the country's illiteracy rate was a nominal 3 percent, the school system was plagued by serious problems, including a rigid tracking system, a high failure rate, and poorly paid instructors. In 1984 the Socialist government passed the Organic Law on the Right to Education (Ley Organica del Derecho a la EducacionLODE) in an attempt to integrate into a single system the three school systems: public, private secular, and Roman Catholic. Changes reached the university level as well, as the Law on University Reform (Ley de Reforma UniversitariaLRU) made each public university autonomous, subject only to general rules set down in Madrid.

News Bulletin Current Affairs Euro 2004 ... Reader Response A Modern Fairy Tale for Spain Felipe and Letizia at the altar. Spain's Crown Prince Felipe married former television presenter Letizia Ortiz on Saturday in Madrid's Almudena cathedral. The couple was cheered on by crowds of spectators undeterred by pouring rain and tight security.
In a traditional and ornate Roman Catholic service, Felipe and Letizia made their vows in front of 1,400 guests including heads of state and the members of several royal families. The 31-year-old bride wore a high-collared ivory dress with a 4.5 meter train and the 36-year-old groom was decked out in military dress. Due to the torrential rain, Letizia was unable walk the red carpet from the Royal Palace to the cathedral, instead arriving in a Rolls Royce. But the rain could not spoil the event which is being seen by many Spaniards as a chance to put the deadly March 11 terrorist bombings in Madrid behind the country.
