Few scientific disciplines seem to generate as many mysteries and falsehoods as astronomy and, by extension, the supporting space science effort to explore the unknown. From alleged hoaxes and conspiracies to unintentionally inaccurate accounts, there is plenty to debunk and correct. On This Page
Mysteries
Myths Hoaxes
Some of the bad information out there is demeaning to real science, an affront to astronomers, astronauts and the general public. Allegations that the Moon landings were fake tops that list. Some of the misinformation is just what it is, non-facts that manage to pop up again and again, either in our brains or in print, many of them perhaps because they seem logical enough. A classic example is the erroneous suggestion that meteors burn up due to friction with air molecules. There are countless mysteries, too, things for which we simply don't have answers despite years or decades of investigation. Dark energy, life, and the origin of sex are but three puzzles astronomers contemplate. The universe is a complex place. Because our weekly Science Tuesday presentations are intended to serve as reservoirs of interesting and factual news and information about the universe, I thought it would be useful to devote one installment to reviewing some of the many myths, outlandish claims, incorrect accounts and plain old enigmas related to nearby and distant cosmic objects and phenomena.

Here we go again. Yet another christian has decided to pervert the concept of Lost in Space by duct taping it to christianity.
You can see the page by clicking here.
To Alex, I apologize. Your web page is, in comparison, a bastion of intelligence and subtlety.
Oh, isn't that lovely. The guy is using the Lost in Space robot, an icon of science fiction, to promote the anti science messages of creationism and christianity.
The premise of the robot's anti science rant is as follows: just like a robot cannot arise from nature, but rather needs a designer, so too life needs a designer, therefore goddidit. Sigh. Warming up the old, dead "a watch needs a watchmaker" argument does not make it any more valid than when it was refuted about, oh, a couple of centuries ago. Frankly, what this person is doing is disgusting. It is about on the level of taking the Lost in Space robot and using it as a prop in a photo shoot for Hustler. I admit I do not have much sympathy for license holders and their greedhead attitudes but at the same time I can see their point int this instance. Let's hope the license holders for Lost in Space put him out of business immediately. Gadzooks greedheads might actually do something good for a change, in spite of themselves. These are strange times we live in.

Brief Introduction to the International Space Station Above: The International Space Station The International Space Station (ISS) is to be the largest structure in space. When completed in 2003 it will be 290 feet long, have a wing span of 356 feet and 4.5 inches, and weigh 414 tons. It will take over 50 launches to complete and is the largest international space project ever undertaken, involving teams from the United States of America, Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil, and eleven European countries. Powered by solar arrays it will be able to generate 110 kilowatts of power. When done it will support a permanent international crew of seven astronauts and their experiments. The assembly will require launch vehicles from the United States, Russia, and possibly Japan and France. It will be assembled by flight crew onboard the shuttle and later on the ISS its self. Construction on the International Space has already started. In December 1998, the crew of Space Shuttle Mission STS-88 began construction of the International Space Station, joining the U.S.-built Unity node to the Russian-built Zarya module. The crew carried a large format IMAX(r) camera from which this picture was taken. Astronaut James Newman working on communication cables on Unity while Astronaut Ross monitors his progress .

http://www.bonestell.org/
Chesley Bonestell (1888-1986) was the father of modern space art. His
career spanned nearly a century, from his early architectural work on the
Golden Gate Bridge and the Chrysler Building to his seminal contributions to
the beginnings of the American space program.
Bonestell Space Art was created more than
three decades ago in collaboration with Chesley
Bonestell's artwork, licensing its use in books,
magazines, prints, the Internet, etc. It also
arranges exhibitions, appraises Bonestell
paintings and brokers sales between collectors.
Bonestell Space Art maintains the single largest collection in the world of photographs, transparencies and prints of Bonestell artwork, almost all which are high-quality images made from the original paintings. This includes scores of non-astronomical subjects-such as his classic Mission series-some of which date back as early as the turn of the 20th century.
