Image credit: NRAO Youngest Black Hole Found? Jun 11, 2004 - A global team of radio astronomers think they might have found the youngest black hole or neutron star approximately 30 million light-years from Earth. A supernova in exactly the same location was found to have exploded some time around 1983, and subsequent observations have found a brightly-emitting object at the very centre of the supernova remnant. They still can't tell if it's actually a black hole, or just a neutron star or pulsar, so further measurements will be required. The tiny moon is only 220 km (137 miles) across, and Cassini will get within 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles). This picture was taken on June 10 - one day before its closest encounter - when Cassini was still 658,000 kilometres (409,000 miles) away, so the resolution of the image is going to get much much better. Cassini will reach Saturn at the end of the month. (Full Story) Related Stories Discuss this story Image credit: ESA Wallpaper: Flood Plains on Mars Jun 10, 2004

    Pasadena (JPL) Jun 11, 2004
A NASA Ames planetary scientist is part of the science team that will study the data and images returned this week from the closest-ever flyby of Saturn's moon Phoebe. "This is a unique opportunity," said Dr. Dale Cruikshank, co-investigator for the Cassini Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS), an instrument that will measure the chemical signatures of Phoebe's surface.

The President's Commission on Moon, Mars, and Beyond (also known as the Aldridge Commission) will recommend a sweeping series of organizational changes within NASA in its final report, Space News reported late Thursday. Space News, which obtained a summary of the final report in advance of its release on June 16, reported that the commission will recommend that NASA spin off several of its field centers as federally-funded research and development centers (FFRDC). JPL is an example of an existing FFRDC. The commission will also recommend that NASA and Congress establish three new organizations within the agency, including a technical advisory board, an independent cost estimation group, and a high-risk technology development organization. The report will also recommend that NASA rely primarily on the private sector to provide services to NASA, including access to Earth orbit. Related Links:
