in affiliation with the
by Judy Peterson Denny Eggert, president andfounder of the museum, took a fiveman recovery team to Chicago to pick up the crates and boxes. These must remain closed for the most part until there is a place for the plane and cars to be assembled because of their fragile state. This is also to ensure no parts are lost so the plane can be restored to its original state. What they have unpacked has been in pristine condition.
"it's the oldest aircraft ever recovered in the U.S.,"said Eggert. "What's really surprising is the technology and the engineering that was put into it, on the heels of the Wright Brother's flight. "
The builder was James S. Stephens, a native of Nova Scotia, who lived in St. Paul, Minn., in the 1880s. He was mechanical superintendent of the Milwaukee Railroad and an engineer ing consultant for Hamm BrewingCompany before moving to Chicago as chief electrician at the Columbia Ex position in 1892. Stephens and his son, Ralph, founded Steco Engineering Company to build prototypes of both the aeroplane and cycle cars. The 1911 aircraft wona U.S. patent for a radically new empennage flight control system which was a major advancement over the warp-able airfoils used by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, N.C., eight years earlier. There were no ailerons, elevators, rudders, or wing warpage to control directional flight. For easy flying, the plane was made with only one movable surface the tail. It was connected to a straight handlebar, similar to one on a moun tain bike. The pilot could turn the plane by turning the handlebar left orright or could make it dive or climb by moving the handlebar backward or forward. Two vertical stabilizers mounted between the upper and lower wings kept the plane from slipping or skidding while it turned. Total weight empty was 1,320 Ibs.

Russia’s hidden treasures of space
One museum keeps the ship used by world’s first spaceman; another preserves the dogs that preceded him into orbit
By Alan Boyle MOSCOW — It’s not listed in the tourist guides, and they won’t let you just walk in the door, but there’s a hidden store of space treasures and kitsch at the Energia Museum of Rocket Space Engineering in Korolyov, just north of Moscow. YOU CAN TOUCH the dark brown, spherical Vostok craft that Yuri Gagarin rode into history 40 years ago as the first human in space. Other items include the capsule from which Alexei Leonov made the world’s first spacewalk in 1965, the Soyuz descent capsule that was used in 1975’s Apollo-Soyuz linkup and mock-ups of the two linked spacecraft as well as of a Salyut space station. You can even climb inside the museum’s Soyuz T-3 — it’s a tight fit for just one person, let alone the three people who rode it back to Earth in 1980. “I ask people how long they could stay in there,” says museum guide Yelena Dubinko, “and they say five minutes, not more.” The museum is at the headquarters of the Energia rocket company, which restricts access to outsiders because of security concerns. For that reason, Dubinko says would-be visitors have to call about five days in advance to arrange for a visit.

Open daily from 10:00 a. m. to 7:00 p. m. Admission: $2 "This is Su-15", says Gennady Roshichin pointing to the long, narrow Sukhoi fighter that was once a staple of the Soviet Air Force. "It was this type jet that shotdown Korean Air Lines 747"."In fact", he elaborates, "when a Russian movie was made about the 1983 downing of flight 007, this very jet was used in the filming". Roshchin moves down the line. "This is Su-25", he says, pointing to a ground-attack jet with rocket pods and dummybombs hung from the wings. This saw very much action in Afghanistan. He walks on, continuing with the same authoritative dispassion one hears in thevoices of museum guides the world over. But it would be impossible to mistake Roshchin for anything other than a Russian. He is a retired Soviet fighter pilot who will say of his past only that heturned in his flightsuit long ago (presshim for specifics and he will graciouslyevade the question). The museum where he serves as deputy director - the National Aviation and Space Museum, a.k.a. the National Aeronautics Museumor the Museum of the Air Forces - shows the standard early artifacts found in most collections in favor of morecontemporary models, particularly tactical combat aircraft. Indeed, the more than 30 aircraft on view represent the bulk of Soviet fighters built over the last 40 years.

    • Early instruments at the Museum of the Institute of Physics of Naples . The collection of the early instruments of the Department of Physics of the University of Naples includes about 400 pieces. They may be ascribed to the years beginning from 1820, with the exception of the very antique lens made in Florence by Evangelista Torricelli around 1645 and of the portable sundial made in Naples in 1769. At least 250 instruments were manufactured in the last century. The Museum of the Department of Physics started in 1983. Since then, over 400 instruments have been collected, studied and catalogued.
    • The Astronomical Museum in Bologna was created in 1979, when a first group of instruments was restored on the occasion of the exhibition " I materiali dell'Istituto delle Scienze" . In the following years, further restorations have interested both instruments and rooms. At present the museum is located in the same rooms which were devoted to observations in the ancient tower, i.e. the meridian room (sala meridiana) and the turret room (sala della torretta), and also the recently created globe room (sala dei globi). The instruments used by the Bolognese astronomers from the early 18th century to mid-19th, at first in the " Specola marsiliana" and later in the " Specola" of the " Istituto delle Scienze" , have been brought back to these rooms, with their original placing in mind.

EGYPTIAN MUSEUM The greatest collection of Egyptian antiquities is, without doubt, that of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo . It is a place of true discovery and, even after many visits, I continue to make new and delightful discoveries every time I venture into its many galleries. To be sure, the museum can be daunting in the sheer numbers of its antiquities on show, but there is an order within its layout and it is a dream come true for anyone wanting to study Egyptian antiquities. However, the negative side is that the environmental and display conditions leave a great deal to be desired. Labels on some exhibits date from early in the century and many items have no labels at all. Guidebooks are available at the museum, although they are limited to some of the major items. The museum's ground floor follows the history of ancient Egypt. Upon entering through the security check in the building, one looks toward the atrium and the rear of the building with many items on view - from sarcophagi and boats to enormous statues. Just in front of these you will find an Object of the Month on display. Behind it are some of the most important items from the time of the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt some 5,000 years ago, including the famous slate palette of king Narmer - one of the first documents of Egyptian history. Also on show are small masterpieces of sculpture - keep in mind that these are some 50 centuries old. This is an area that should not be missed!
