field of flight into their adventure fiction magazines. Filled with futuristic ideas, these publications were never meant to way we imagine air and space travel
http://www.centennialofflight.gov/essay/Social/pulps/SH12.htm
Popular movies like Star Wars have inspired comics that feature their well-known characters, such as R2-D2.
The comic strip, titled Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, debuted on January 7, 1929, with the character now called by his nickname. It ran until 1967.
This 1928 issue of Amazing Stories introduced Anthony "Buck" Rogers to the world.
This comic, designed by people at NASA, tells the story of Apollo 13.
A group of people at NASA's Langley Research Center created a comic book called "Aero Space" in 1992 as a handout for middle school students. The goal was to educate young people concerning the career possibilities within the aerospace industry.
These adventures directly inspired a number of Jules Verne's stories. Reade's helicopter airships predate Verne's Albatross by several years.
Pulps and Comic Books: Popularizing Air and Space Travel
Almost a half-century before humans would invent the airplane, the editors of some popular publications understood the appeal and excitement of flight and incorporated the burgeoning field of flight into their adventure fiction magazines. Filled with futuristic ideas, these publications were never meant to be educational or sophisticated. They were entertainment aimed primarily at young males, simply written and filled with illustrations. Printed on cheaply produced, wood-pulp paper, they were given the derogatory name "pulps." Comic books took this formula a step further, reducing its stories to dynamic drawings with minimal storylines. Despite their lowbrow appeal, however, pulps and comic books gave birth to the way we imagine air and space travel.

28. Approaching The '80s Zine Scene: Alternative Art Publishing: Artists' Magazines
book as an alternative space. Studio International periodicals, institutionally sponsored magazines, alternative art publications, regional art
http://www.zinebook.com/resource/perkins/perkins5.html
Alternative Art Publishing:
Artists' Magazines (1960-1980)
by Stephen Perkins These two decades witness a steep rise in the number of magazines edited and produced by artists, all of them addressing a wide range of concerns, in a variety of formats and utilizing a host of different printing technologies. Imbued with the philosophy of opposition inherited from the underground press and artists' books, and seeking to establish new contexts for discussion, criticism, dissemination and documentation of their work, the years 1965-75 are seminal for artist produced magazines.
In the words of Howardena Pindell, the artist produced magazine came to function as an "alternative space." (1,2) This concept undermined and collapsed two inherited structures endemic to previous assumptions about magazines: 1) artists now began to write about the artworld from within the movements, carving out a partisan position that circumvented the established critical apparatus, and it was hoped, would undermine the hegemony of the art world power structure; 2) where previously art work, texts and documentation were 'illustrated' in magazines, in this new 'space' the magazine became the primary site for the works themselves. The magazine becomes an exhibition space, a critical space, a documentary space and an archival space. Art made for magazines, and intended for reproduction, introduces a new aesthetic for which Clive Phillpot has coined the term 'magazine art.' (3)
With ideas of the traditional gallery in serious question and many artists, nationally and internationally, working outside of these structures, the artists' magazine offered an important and efficient link in disseminating new work amongst this emerging international community. For artists who's work did not require a physical site for its realization, artists' magazines functioned as simultaneous bridges between artists in varied geographic locations and as a sites through which 'transnational' collaborations could take place.

http://www.zinebook.com/resource/perkins/perkins8.html
Mail Art and Networking
Magazines (1970-1980)
by Stephen Perkins About the only aspect of mail art that one can state with any degree of certainty is that it is entirely dependent upon the international postal system for its existence. More broadly speaking it's roots are in the opposition to the establishment art world of the 1960's, and as such, it adopted much of this ethos of resistance, coupled with the expanded concepts of art and artmaking circulating at this time.
However, what was sent through this system and the manner in which it acted as a catalyst for innumerable and varied projects defies categorization in any traditional terms. Quite self-consciously set-up to operate outside of the artworld establishment and thereby circumventing the commodification inherent in that system, it has to a large extent succeeded in this important respect. How this has been achieved was to take the money out of the artmaking paradigm, and to replace it with a paradigm based upon reciprocity and exchange.
One other important element in the construction of this new paradigm was the attempt at collapsing the dichotomy between art and life, and subsequently between artist and non-artist. This aspect of all-inclusiveness encouraged an interrogation of the arena of 'social space,' and did much to maintain the vitality of mail art, allowing it to expand, particularly in its early period 1970-75. About The Space Review
The Space Review is an online publication whose focus is on publishing in-depth articles, essays, editorials, and reviews on a wide range of space-related topics. The Space Review is not a space news site that will publish short news articles on a daily basis; there are plenty of other sites that do that. (Please check out our affiliated site, Spacetoday.net , for links to dozens of space news articles published online each day.) Instead, we plan to focus on articles that will provide a deeper examination of key space issues, events, history, and related topics. The Space Review is a reaction to the difficulties faced by publications, both online and print, which have focused primarily on space. Magazines like Final Frontier and Space Illustrated could not get enough subscribers and advertisers to be viable ventures. Space articles can be found in a variety of other publications, from Air and Space to Discover to Sky and Telescope, but are usually only a small part of their overall editorial mix. Several online publications continue to focus on space, like SPACE.com and Spaceflight Now, but these sites focus more on reporting news (and do a good job at it) than publishing lengthy articles and opinion pieces. There are, of course, a few sites that do publish lengthy articles and commentary, including NASA Watch, SpaceRef, and SpaceDaily, but there is certainly room for more. jeff@thespacereview.com
