Space Research and You: The STS-107 Research Mission
The 80-plus experiments aboard Space Shuttle mission STS-107 represent the latest application of microgravity as a fundamental, versatile tool to gain insights in space and improve life on Earth as well as enable future space exploration.
Please note: if you are looking for information about the STS-107 Tragedy or Investigation, please see the NASA home page . This site contains only information about the mission science activities. The last half-century of human inquiry into the basics of life, materials, and energy has yielded an astonishing range of answers and capabilities. It also has yielded new questions that require more sophisticated investigations to understand and apply the subtle, elegant workings of the inner universe. Many investigations have been stymied by inescapable effects of Earth's gravity. But the last halfcentury also saw scientists start using the microgravity of orbit to turn those effects off and thus unmask basic phenomena that play key roles in biology, physics, and chemistry on Earth as well as space. STS-107 is a Shuttle mission dedicated to research investigating human physiology, fire suppression, and other areas of research relevant to people across the globe, hence the theme Space Research and You STS stands for "Space Transportation System", a.k.a the Space Shuttle, and "107" is the "flight tail number" or the 107th flight of the Space Shuttle, although the order of missions may have changed after assignment of the flight number. The research on STS-107 builds on our experiences with Skylab and Spacelab, and supports longer, more ambitious research aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The Shuttle Columbia and its crew of seven will devote this 16-day mission to a mixed complement of competitively selected and commercially sponsored research in the space, life, and physical sciences.

Water on the Space Station
Rationing and recycling will be an essential part of life on the International Space Station. In this article, Science@NASA explores where the crew will get their water and how they will (re)use it.
Listen to this story (requires RealPlayer November 2, 2000 Future astronauts poised to blast off for an extended stay on the International Space Station (ISS) might first consider dashing to the restroom for a quick splash at the lavatory, or better yet, a luxurious hot shower. Once on board the ISS, spacefarers are in for a steady diet of sponge baths using water distilled from among other places their crewmates breath! If you're squeamish, read no farther, because the crew will eventually include lab rodents and they'll be breathing, too. All of the denizens of the space station lose water when they exhale or sweat. Such vapors add to the ambient cabin humidity, which is eventually condensed and returned to the general water supply. Sometimes it's better not to think about where your next glass of water is coming from!

(303) 492-3525 david.klaus@colorado.edu This course is primarily intended to familiarize engineering students with factors affecting living organisms (ranging from single cells to humans) in the reduced-gravity environment of space flight. Unique engineering insight will be gained regarding design requirements for advanced life support systems , space habitats and space biotechnology payloads. NASA programs associated with the human exploration and development of space , along with current goals and challenges of biological and physical research activities, are reflected and identified throughout the lecture topics. Life support fundamentals, as they relate to basic human sustenance, are covered initially. Next, the lectures turn to more detailed descriptions of the physiological adaptations that occur to people in space, with pertinent background information presented for each topic. Corresponding biomedical countermeasures needed to maintain crew health for long duration missions will also be discussed. Finally, the underlying physical mechanisms affected by gravity, along with experimental design criteria, will be addressed. Homework assignments emphasize elements of publishing and obtaining research funding as conducted per standard practice in the scientific community.

Academic Program A graduate specialty program related to BioServe’s research, termed Bioastronautics and Microgravity Sciences exists within the Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) Department at CU. This multidisciplinary field of study offers a variety of novel applications for a traditional engineering education. Bioastronautics encompasses the biological, behavioral and medical aspects governing humans and other organisms living in a space environment and includes vehicle design for space or planetary habitation. The complementary area of Microgravity Sciences expands this endeavor from biological systems into combustion sciences, gravitational fluid mechanics and materials processing in space through common analysis of the underlying gravity-dependent physical principles associated with each application. Collectively, these topics are represented in two of NASA 's six Strategic Enterprises the Space Flight Enterprise and the Biological and Physical Research Enterprise Rankings CU-Boulder was recently ranked as the 11th top public university in the world by The Economist (March 2004) in a study that was based largely on research criteria and as the 19th best public engineering graduate college in the nation in the annual (April 2004), with the

Exploring Space
Unit overview
The unit examines the impact of technology on the space program, in the past, and at present. Students also have an opportunity to speculate on the direction that space exploration could (or should) take in the future. Due to the nature of the material in this unit, fewer opportunities exist for hands-on activities. However, the unit provides many opportunities to develop Independent Learning, in conjunction with a Resource-Based Learning approach to researching and investigating space exploration. The optional unit, earth's climate , can also be integrated with this unit. Climatic patterns on earth can be studied by analyzing information which has been sent back to earth from weather satellites. These satellites provide us with information that would have been difficult, if not impossible, to obtain otherwise. Once consideration is given to climate, then the related life science units on Ecosystems and Plant and Animal Adaptations can be brought in as well. Science writing and reading activities, as discussed in this Guide, should be incorporated into each lesson. Writing science fiction stories based on science fact, reading articles from newspapers or magazines, and summarizing what they have read in the form of a chart are only two strategies through which students may refine their understanding of the concepts of science and develop their ability to communicate through the written word.

More Access to High-Quality Mammography Needed to Reduce Cancer Deaths
June 10 While new technologies hold promise for increasing the accuracy of breast cancer detection, improving access to mammography and broadening the pool of medical personnel who can interpret mammograms offer the greatest potential for immediately reducing the number of breast cancer deaths in the United States, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council.
Indoor Mold, Dampness Are Linked to Respiratory Problems
May 25 Scientific evidence links mold and other factors related to damp conditions in homes and other buildings to asthma symptoms in some asthmatics as well as to coughing, wheezing and other upper respiratory tract symptoms in otherwise healthy people, says a new Institute of Medicine report. The available evidence does not support an association between either interior dampness or mold and the wide range of other health complaints that have been ascribed to them, but the possibility of a link cannot be ruled out.

Good Astronomy Activities on the World Wide Web
printer-friendly version
This resource list includes a small selection of especially effective astronomy activities designed for K-12 classes and science projects. We focus on those activities that are either hands-on, or at least encourage students to think for themselves, and not merely follow a cookbook recipe or fill in a few blanks. Each listing has a brief summary and comments; note that these comments are the opinion of the list's compiler and are not the "official policy" of Project ASTRO or the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Another person in astronomy education may have selected a different list of activities and may have had different things to say about them. Additions or suggestions for future editions of this list are most welcome. The Web is now a huge, and mostly unorganized, repository of information, and we make no claim that our list is complete. Instead, we simply hope that it can introduce you to the wide range of organizations and institutions that are working to put astronomy activities on the web, and to give you leads for activities that contain reasonable astronomy and emphasize hands-on, inquiry-based learning.
