Far-Out Chores on the International Space Station
Content and design by Bishop Web Works.
Four Facts
about Real Life in Space
Astronauts on the International Space Station dispose of their trash with the aid of a space-age garbage truck. A Russian rocket, The Progress , retrieves the garbage and incinerates it in Earth's atmosphere! more
Cooking in space is pretty easy astronauts make their favorite meals by adding water to packets of freeze-dried food. more
Orange juice or whole milk cannot be dehydrated. Rehydrated orange juice crystals form orange "rocks"! To get the necessary vitamins and minerals, astronauts drink Tang and nonfat dry milk.

Possibilities expanded by International Space Station
For future space development and rich life on the Earth
ISS provides mankind with a basis for full-scale activities in space. Man's dreams of space take a giant stride forward. Utilizing the near-zero-gravity environment in ISS, new types of materials will be developed. In addition, astronomical observations will be conducted to solve the secret of space, Earth observations will track global environmental changes, and researches will be conducted for mankind to live in space.
Microgravity Science Microgravity Experiment - New material development in a microgravity environment -
In an environment with no gravity, differences of weight or specific gravity of materials do not cause materials to move or mix due to convection. Utilizing such an environment, it will become possible to conduct research and development on new or higher quality material. These experiments will provide new materials medicines useful for our daily life.
In a microgravity environment, protein crystals can be grown with better quality than on Earth. These crystals will be analyzed to clarify the structure of proteins. This will promote research into the causes of sicknesses or development of medicines.

24. History Of Japan's Manned Space Activities
in the field of life science, which were proposed accumulated experience in mannedspace experiments supported through Robotics and Extra Vehicular activities.
http://iss.sfo.jaxa.jp/astro/astrodoc2_e.html
History of Japan's manned space activities In 1985, three people, Mamoru Mohri, Chiaki Mukai, and Takao Doi, were selected as NASDA's(JAXA's) first generation of astronauts who would conduct space experiments. Mamoru Mohri flew aboard the Space Shuttle (STS-47/ FMPT ) for the first time as a Japanese astronaut in March 1992. Since then, NASDA(JAXA) has been accumulating experience in manned space activities. Based on this experience, Japan hopes to contribute to constructing and operating the International Space Station (ISS) and Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo). The construction of the ISS began in late 1998, and Kibo will be attached to the ISS from 2006 to 2007. From the viewpoint of manned space activity, the period of 15 years from 1992, when a Japanese astronaut first flew in space aboard a Space Shuttle to the completion of Kibo in 2007 can be categorized in three phases. First phase: Learning about the space environment through space experiments. In the first phase, NASDA(JAXA) participated in NASA's Space Shuttle missions in which manned space experiments were conducted in order to prepare for full-scale manned space activities to come during ISS operation. Through the FMPT conducted aboard STS-47 held in 1992 and through the IML-2 conducted aboard STS-65 in 1994, NASDA(JAXA) was able to acquire basic knowledge for transporting humans to space, and to conduct research and development of technologies needed for space experiments utilizing microgravity.

26. NASA/MSU-Bozeman CERES Project Educational Activities
materials for standard math and science courses of life even when the particular lifeform is expanding universe and review Hubble space Telescope measurements
http://btc.montana.edu/ceres/html/EdActivities.html
A team of master teachers, university faculty, and NASA researchers have created a series of web-based astronomy and astrobiology lessons for the CERES Project. These classroom-ready activities for K-12 students represent a robust combination of contemporary teaching/learning strategies from the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996), exciting and current NASA science data, and Internet pointers to an endless supply of accurate and timely resources.
Three Types of Classroom-Ready Lessons are Available On-line:
  • STUDENT INQUIRIES / EXTENSION LESSONS

  • Students explore NASA data to construct first-hand knowledge about the astronomical universe. These internet-based lessons require 1 to 4 class hours and are tied explicitly to the NRC National Science Education Standards astronomy objectives. They can be used as an introduction to astronomy topics, as an intermediate activity, or as an extension activity that requires active participation by students.
  • SPACEQUESTS

  • QuestForm Template

  • APPLICATIONS IN ASTROBIOLOGY

  • Students explore interdisciplinary science topics within the context of astrobiology to construct first-hand knowledge about the origin, distribution, and future of life on Earth and beyond. These internet-based lessons require 1 to 4 class hours and are closely tied to the NRC National Science Education Standards and the Principles and Standards for Mathematics. These lessons can be used as stand alone activities or as supplemental materials for standard math and science courses. Many of these activities are suitable for both middle and high school students, even though they may be cited as being appropriate for one group or another.

Reflections on the Sea
For centuries, people have been challenged by the mysteries that lie beneath the blue depths of our ocean planet. Very little was known about the ocean until late in the nineteenth century, although nearly three-quarters of the planet is covered by ocean or seawater. Myths and misconceptions abounded. We used to think that the ocean depths were devoid of life. We thought that the seafloor was flat and that it was the same age as the continents. How different a picture we now have of the ocean as the sea has begun to yield its secrets. In the 1870s, the HMS Challenger left England and sailed the world's oceans, throwing out weighted lines and taking soundings to measure the depths of the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans. For the first time, scientists had an inkling of the contours of the ocean floor, took samples of the plants and animals, and measured differences in water temperature and salinity. But the cold, dark water and extreme pressure of the depths kept scientists from knowing the secrets of the deep abyss. Following in the footsteps of those pioneering oceanographers, today's scientists have overcome many of the challenges of the deep by using more sophisticated tools. They can send manned submersibles and sampling devices to plumb the ocean depths, taking photographs and samples of animal life and sediment to bring back to the surface for further study. Even space technology enters the picture. Satellite photos taken of the ocean provide a wide range of information, including water temperature and depth, seafloor topography, and the plankton populations. Using sonar and satellite data, scientists have been able to generate a new map of the ocean floor, thirty times more accurate than the best previous map. This map shows the ruggedness of the Mid-Ocean Ridge as it bisects the Atlantic Ocean. This contrasts to the relatively flat Pacific Ocean floor, its vast expanse broken up by more than a thousand newly discovered underwater volcanoes stretching from Hawaii to the Aleutians.
