The empire began to decline in the late 15th Century, became a Vietnamese vassal state in 1697, and was finally dissolved in the 1820s. The dominant religion of the Cham people was Hinduism and the culture was heavily influenced by India. Many Cham towers still stand in central Vietnam. The most significant example of Cham architecture was My Son near the Vietnamese city of Hoi An. My Son was destroyed by US bombing during the Vietnam War.

Vietnam became a kingdom in early 10th century, and gained virtual autonomy a century later. The native dynastic period ended in mid-19th century, when the country was invaded by France, subsequently by Japan in the following century. It gained sovereignty in 1954, but a war ensued, causing the new nation to split briefly.

KEENE, N.H. General Tours' TBI Tours division unveiled the 10-night World Heritage Tour of Southeast Asia, which enables clients to visit the region's four Unesco World Heritage Sites on one trip. "The reason we did it this year is that it's the first time the air routes existed that enable you to combine all four World Heritage Sites in a single itinerary," said General Tours president Bob Drumm. The World Heritage Sites are: * Sukhothai, Thailandthe first capital of the Thai civilization. This entire city is a World Heritage Site. Highlights of the destination include a tour of Sukhothai Historical Park, the remains of the royal palace and a number of Buddhist temples. * Luang Prabang, Laosthe ancient capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom. Located at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan rivers, it is surrounded by mountains.

Table of Contents Sample Articles Washington State University is probably not very different from many mid-sized universities, rooted in mid-America and laboring in the midst of a curriculum reform. This article, the distillation of the experience and study of three of our general education faculty members, is submitted in the hope that it may prove useful to the hundreds of faculty in scores of similar institutions struggling with the problem of how to integrate Asia in the general education curriculum. Specifically, we have been engaged for more than a decade in revising a general education program that is the heart of undergraduate education for some fifteen thousand students. The foundation and center of this program is a two semester sequence of courses in World Civilizations required of all students. Historical in approach and interdisciplinary in content, these courses are taught by a cadre of faculty at various stages of professional development, from disciplines in the College of Liberal Arts. Instructors participate in an ongoing faculty development program: summer workshops, periodic subject matter presentations, and familiarization with multimedia techniques used to enrich instruction. In sections of approximately one hundred students, faculty members follow a curriculum of stipulated topics related to major world civilizations, employing texts and methods of evaluation of their own choosing. In this academic context, there has been from the outset a unanimous faculty agreement that Asian civilizations should occupy an important position in these courses. Our faculty, including Asian specialists and non-specialists, seasoned instructors, and newcomers, have devised individualized instructional approaches to accomplish this. In what follows, a senior Indologist, a historian of modern China, and a Ph.D. candidate in European history with a background in Middle Eastern studies explicate important topics related to the civilization each is introducing, drawing comparisons selectively with other civilizations. There is no effort to conform to a uniform list of topics for each civilization or a standard method of comparison. We hope this article will provide useful results for other general education faculty introducing these civilizations, and that we may receive your comments and concerns about what we have to say.

  • Ancient Angkor , by Michael Freeman and Claude Jacques, River Books, 1999. A beautiful guide to the Angkor site, this book contains everything needed for a memorable visit: excellent color photography, detailed descriptions, expert and informed text, and many thoughtful extras, ranging from "Lintel Styles" to "The Great Views at Angkor."
  • Angkor and the Khmer Civilization
  • Angkor Wat: Time, Space, and Kingship , by Eleanor Mannikka, University of Hawaii Press, 1996. The book presents Mannikka's theory that the actual physical dimensions and measurements of Angkor Wat encode specific symbolic meanings. Her work has attracted a great deal of interest, but the way it is presented here, with chapter after chapter of mind-numbing lists and diagrams of numerical measurements, is likely to discourage many readers who would otherwise be very interested in her conclusions. Even so, the general reader may want to get the book anyway and just skim through it for the "good parts."
  • The Archaeology of Mainland and Southeast Asia , by Charles Higham, Cambridge University Press, 1989. A book that will appeal mostly to specialists, being a survey of the early archaeology (i.e. pots and beads, rather than temples and Buddhas) of Southeast Asia. A standard reference in its field.

    Relations Between Hindus
    in Modern Indonesia and India
In order to appreciate the relations between Hindus in modern India and Indonesia, we have to recall the fact that 'Hinduism' was unknown in the archipelago until European orientalists and theosophists (see Herman de Tollenaere's article in this theme issue) projected it onto Old Javanese and Balinese culture. It was in the nineteenth century, at a time when European orientalists were constructing 'Hinduism' as a 'world religion' together with their Brahmin informants in India, that British, Dutch, and German scholars discovered traces of ancient Indian 'Hinduism' and Buddhism in the Old Javanese literature, in the newly discovered temple ruins in Java and Bali as well as in the contemporary Balinese culture. In the West, Bali came to be known as the 'last Hindu enclave in the archipelago', whereas the Balinese on their part had hitherto regarded themselves as the heirs of the Old Javanese empire of Majapahit and its culture, and had not even known the term 'Hindu'.
    By MARTIN RAMSTEDT
    Elitist notion
    'Neo-Hinduism'
Having lost its main trade partner, the Soviet Union, in 1989 India has been increasingly orienting itself towards the Asia-Pacific market, as Christophe Jaffrelot has recently pointed out in a paper. Since 1995, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) has annually provided ten scholarships for Indonesians to study Indian culture at an Indian university. These scholarships were exclusively given to Indonesian Hindus who have studied Indian philosophy, Hindi, and Sanskrit in Dehli, Agra, or other Indian cities. The ICCR has furthermore donated complete sets of Vedantic literature to two Balinese temples. Besides, Indian expatriates working in Indonesia like, for instance, the general manager of the Balinese Oberoy Hotel, have been sponsoring the building of Hindu temples and the publication of Hindu literature in Indonesia as well as providing grants for underprivileged members of the Hindu community outside Bali to study Hinduism at one of Indonesia's Hindu colleges.

Introduction Thailand was known for centuries by outsiders as Siam. It first made a real impression on the West at the end of the 17th century, through the reports of a series of inquisitive Frenchmen. They were not the first Europeans to spend time in the kingdom, however. The Portuguese sent an envoy to the capital in 1511, shortly after they seized Malacca. The Portuguese joined resident Chinese, Japanese, Malays and Persians to make the Siamese capital one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the vast region now known as Southeast Asia. Modern and predominantly Buddhist, it is a Southeast Asian kingdom whose ancient equilibrium and present standing mingle in evolving harmony. Substantially, Thailand’s distinctive and unparalleled characteristics stem from Indian and Chinese influences (harmoniously blended by Thai eclecticism), rich ethnic diversity, abundant natural and human resources, and over seven hundred years of cherished independence (Thailand is the only important Southeast Asian society never to have been colonized by Westerners). Thailand’s traditional culture is delicately tuned to the time-honored Buddhist’s non-confrontational approach to life, and ideals of charity, tolerance and loving-kindness
