At present South Koreans call the peninsula Hanguk, while North Koreans call the peninsula Choson. South Korea divides itself politically into nine provinces and six special cities. North Korea divides itself politically into nine provinces and three special cities.
At nearly the same size and latitude as the state of Utah, the entire landmass of the Korean peninsula measures 84,565 square miles. The DMZ division allocated more territory to the North (47,541 square miles) than to the South (38,024 square miles). However, in 2000, the population in the South (est. 46,000,000) far exceeded that of the North (est. 24,300,000).
Climate
Although relatively small, Korea has a surprisingly diverse climate. One of the outcomes of the peninsula's mid-latitude location is its seasonal climate. There are very distinct temperature and moisture patterns for each season.

Location and Landscapes
The DMZ divides the peninsula by separating North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) from South Korea (Republic of Korea). The DMZ is 2.4 miles wide and centers on a demarcation line that extends for 151 miles between the Yellow Sea and the East Sea (or Sea of Japan). The DMZ represents a strange combination of peace within tension. There is peace within the zone because it is “demilitarized” and “off limits” to soldiers and civilians: that means plants and animals inhabiting the zone are protected from humans. Yet, there is an uneasy tension between the opposing combat-ready forces of North and South who still face and intimidate each other across the zone. At present South Koreans call the peninsula Hanguk, while North Koreans call the peninsula Choson. South Korea divides itself politically into nine provinces and six special cities. North Korea divides itself politically into nine provinces and three special cities.

The Korean Peninsula is located just south of China, separating the Yellow Sea on the West from the Sea of Japan on the East. It connects in the Northeast with Siberia. One of its islands is within 21 miles of Japan, to the Southeast. It is irregularly shaped, 600 miles long and between 130 and 200 miles east to west, encompassing 86,000 square miles. The terrain includes plains near the coastlands, and mountains to the East and North. The number of mountain ranges have earned Korea the nickname "Switzerland of Asia." Among these are the Geum-gahng-sahn along the east coast, the Hahm-gyung-sahn in the northeast and Tae-baek-sahn in the southeast. To the north, in North Korea, is Mt Baek-doo-sahn. The highest mountain in South Korea is Mt. Hal-la-sahn, found on the island of Che-ju-do. Photographs of Korean mountains http://www.hellopageskorea.com/enjoy/tour/gangwon/enjoy_tour-gangwon_nature_body.htm (Photograph from Korean Culture, Tourism, and Language) The two longest rivers of the Korean peninsula are the Am-rok-gahng and the Doo-mahn-gahng with a combined length of 815 miles. The northern Hahn-gahng, which flows through Seoul, is the largest river system. The second largest river system, the Nahk-dong-gahng, flows through the southeast. Many rivers have hydroelectric dams, such as the Chung-pyung dam on the So-yang-gahng River.

Geography and Location
The Korean Peninsula extends southward from the northeastern part of the Asian continent between latitudes from 33 to 43 degrees North, and longitudes from 124 to 131 degrees East. Since 1945, as a result of the Cold War, the peninsula has been divided into two parts: the democratic Republic of Korea, or South Korea, and communist Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea.
Area and Topography
The total area of the peninsula is 222,154 square kilometers, similar in size to that of Britain, New Zealand, or Romania. South Korea occupies 99,392 square kilometers or 45 percent of the total land mass, and North Korea the remaining 122,762 square kilometers. Seventy percent of the land is covered with mountains, particularly to the north and east.
Along the southern and western coasts, the mountains descend gradually into broad coastal plains. Most of the rivers have their tributaries in the northern and eastern sides, and flow into the West and South Seas. Concentrated for the most part on the southern coast are more than 3,000 islands of various sizes that provide a scenery that is unparalleled by any other place in the world. Korean Geography
The Korean peninsula lies directly between China and Japan, extending in a southeasterly direction from the continent. A relatively small land, Korea is roughly 1,000 kilometers in length and only 216 kilometers wide at its narrowest point ( map links The peninsula is separated from China in the northwest by the Yalu River, from the Soviet Union in the northeast by the Tuman River, and from Japan by the East Sea. China's Shantung peninsula lies just 190 kilometers to the west across the Yellow Sea. The Korean peninsula is in fact a "chain of hills" stretching from the mainland. Mountains cover 70% of Korea's land area, making it one of the most mountainous regions in the world and a great place for hikers and nature lovers. On the peninsula, coexisting uneasily side by side, separated only by the De-militarized Zone roughly approximating the 38th parallel, lie the Republic of Korea in the South and North Korea. The Republic of Korea is somewhat smaller in land area, 99,091 square kilometers compared to 122,370 in the North, but its population of just over 45 million is about twice as large as the North's. During the Korean War (1950-1953), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the Peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 20 times the level of North Korea. South Korea has maintained its commitment to democratize its political processes. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Dae-jung and the North's leader KIM Chong-il.

KIM Chong-il has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feed its population while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and massive conventional armed forces are of major concern to the international community. In December 2002, North Korea repudiated a 1994 agreement that shut down its nuclear reactors and expelled UN monitors, further raising fears it would produce nuclear weapons.
