South Korea Introduction Back to Top South Korea, officially Republic of Korea, country in north-eastern Asia that occupies the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula. South Korea is bounded on the north by North Korea; on the east by the Sea of Japan (known in Korea as the East Sea); on the south-east and south by the Korea Strait, which separates it from Japan; and on the west by the Yellow Sea. In Korean the country's name is Dachan ("Great Han"), "Han" being another traditional name for Korea. It has a total area of 99,390 sq km (38,375 sq mi), including numerous offshore islands in the south and west, the largest of which is Cheju (with an area of 1,829 sq km/706 sq mi). The state of South Korea was established in 1948 following the post-World War II partitioning of the peninsula between the occupying forces of the United States in the south and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in the north. The capital and largest city of South Korea is Seoul. Population 45,545,280 (1996 estimate) Population Density 459 people/sq km (1,189 people/sq mi) (1996 estimate) Urban/Rural Breakdown 84%Urban 16%Rural Largest Cities Seoul10,229,260 Pusan3,813,800 Taegu2,449,100 (1995 census) Ethnic Groups 99.9%Korean 0.1%Other mostly Chinese Language Official Language Korean Religions 50%Atheist 24%Mahayana Buddhism 23%Protestantism 3%Other including Confucianism, Daoism, and Ch'ondogyo

Attractions Culture South Korea has a vibrant arts scene and a history of creative innovation. If you're interested in traditional or contemporary painting, sculpture, music, dance, or drama, you will never lack for places to visit in South Korea. In addition, South Korea is an active competitor in worldwide sporting events, with many first-class sporting facilities around Seoul and Pusan.
Printing and Literature One of Korea's great achievements was the 15th-century invention of Hangul, the Korean phonetic alphabet. Hangul is relatively easy to learn, with 24 letters that are combined into blocks of syllables. The accessibility of Hangul has contributed to Korea's high literacy rate. Another great Korean innovation was the first use of movable metal type, in 1234. Korea's long literary history grew not only from its innovations in printing, but through the tradition of telling folk tales and legends at festivals and other gatherings. These stories outlined the kingdom's mythical origins and stressed Korean values. The National Folklore Museum in Seoul preserves an extensive collection of Korean cultural and folklore relics.

Japanese pop culture invades South Korea
Young South Koreans are packing games rooms to shake and shimmy to Japanese video games January 11, 2000 Web posted at: 12:16 p.m. HKT (0416 GMT) SEOUL, South Korea Just three months after South Korea lifted its ban on Japanese music and movies, Japanese pop culture which has swept across much of East Asia has taken South Korea by storm. Younger South Koreans are packing into music and video shops to check out the latest hits from Japan. Bands like Speed and singing sensation Utada Hikaru are hugely popular. Their albums often outsell those by their South Korean counterparts.

N orth Korea and South Korea have been divided for half of a century since 1953. Unlike the case of West and East Germanys, since North and South Koreas have been separated completely, both Koreans even have not shared any ways to know and to communicate each other. Even though two Koreas started to reconcile in many aspects such as economic cooperation, limited permission for South Koreans¡¯ traveling to North Korea, and decrease in revilement against each other, however, they are not enough to know each others closely and to minimize the deep cultural gap between North and South Koreans. Until now this tragic situation, caused by the stark ideologies, has been maintained for the security and peace for each country. Both Korean governments regard visiting the other side without the governments¡¯ permission as spying, and the permission is extremely limited. However, recently, the situation begins to change. Due to the devastated economic condition, North Korea needs help from South Korea. Moreover, as a result of the consistent effort of South Korea toward the unification, so called ¡°Sunshine Policy¡± by Daejung Kim, the President of South Korea, Koreans start to believe that the long desire of Koreans for unification is possible event rather than unrealistic imagination. However, although the unification of North and South Koreas is passionately welcomed by Koreans as well as the international community, it needs to be considered that the real unification of North and South Koreas, not just political unification, might not be achieved without the common cultural identity of both sides¡¯ Koreans. Thus, the need to experience and know each other as a preoperational process is required not only in the governmental level but also public level.

    72. Korean Circumcision

    The strange case of
    Circumcision in
    South Korea
Policy Statement For the record, the author of these pages is firmly opposed to all involuntary circumcision, the Korean variety no more or less than any other, and has no issue with any other aspect of Korean culture. HY Circumcision in South Korea is interesting for several reasons:
    • It is of recent origin - less than 50 years - making it almost rootless
    • It is performed (for "medical" and sexual reasons) in late childhood
    • It is very much taken for granted, and assumed to be universal
    • Religious circumcision is almost unknown.
Circumcision itself was almost unknown in South Korea before before the US trusteeship, 1945-48, and the heavy US involvement in the Korean War; 1950-53. Older men report not having heard of it (except in a biblical context) before then. It seems an inescapable conclusion that it was adopted because of US cultural influence. It is reported to have greatly increased in the 1960s, with many articles in newspapers promoting it. Since then it has become almost universal. An estimated 14 million South Korean men are now circumcised. While circumcision has declined in the United States over the last two decades, in South Korea it has not. In fact, circumcision of adults currently makes the circumcision rate higher than the birthrate! The exceptions to this nearly universal circumcision are interesting. In a survey of men in Seoul streets, a majority (69%) of the 92 intact men said they did not need to be circumcised because they were "naturally circumcised". This might be taken to mean they had either a very short foreskin or none (

South Korea: End the Chaebol Culture
    Andy Xie (Hong Kong)
A version of the following appeared in Chosun Daily on June 3, 2003 The key barrier to a thorough reform, in our view, is economic nationalism. Korea is facing mounting economic difficulties Its economy contracted in the first quarter, and the economic environment deteriorated further in the second quarter. Moreover, the SARS crisis might reduce demand for Korea Korea North Korea Chaebol transparency has become a serious concern for financial markets again with the SK Global accounting scandal. I believe the second quarter might even contract more than in the first. Amid all the bad news, however, we believe the Korea government must continue to focus on structural reforms. The economic difficulties that Korea is facing today mostly stem from its structural problems. Stimulus lessens the short-term pain but does not lead to lasting growth. We believe only a sharp rise in the efficiency of Korea Consumption weakness, for example, is a direct consequence of the excesses in the past years

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Jeju do Cheju do - Culture C heju Island is the smallest province of the republic. Oval in shape, Cheju Island measures 40 miles (64 km) from east to west and 16 miles (26 km) from north to south. The island is known as a place of fantasy or mystery and it is the most beautiful island in Korea. It is located in the southwest sea of the Korean peninsula and is highlighted for its uniqueness. It is a tourist resort (with no other industry) fullfilling all conditions for a resort area. Cheju Island is also known as the "Island of the Gods". The island offers visitors a wide range of activities: hiking on Halla-san (South Korea's highest peak), catching sunrises and sunsets over the ocean, viewing majestic waterfalls, riding horses or just lying around on the sandy beaches. The mountain Halla and surrounding area is a national park. Hundreds of crater-formed hills from which volcanic material once flowed, seaside precipices with waterfalls and lava tunnels are international sightseeing attractions. Tourism is an important business on Cheju Island with its abundance of natural attractions. There are many parks, tourist sites and privately established recreational spots, combining to support Cheju's image as a traveller's paradise. Cheju Sculpture Park, located at the base of Mt. Sanban, is a virtual museum of natural "artwork". Over 160 carvings are displayed in this park where nature itself becomes an expansive exhibition hall spreading from Mountain Halla to the coast. Within the park are many ponds, an observation tower, souvenir centers and children's amusement facilities, providing additional destinations after time spent appreciating the park's collection of sculptures.

    Various Aspects of Korean Culture
    Traditions
Business Concepts Table Manners Greetings ... Hospitality Korean culture is vastly different from New Zealand culture, and so adjusting to a completely new way of life can leave you a little shocked and daunted at times. Things that make perfect sense to you will not make any sense at all to Koreans, and you will encounter this in all aspects of Korean culture, including your workplace. You have to learn to accept these differences or else you may go crazy! Top of Page There are some really nice people in Korea who will for no reason offer you advice or give you a scarf if you are looking cold, and there are some not so nice characters here, it's a big city and no matter where you go, not everyone will be nice. Overall, we have found that the further out from Seoul the nicer the Koreans are to foreigners. We have turned up in tiny Korean villages having missed a train and be taken in and fed by families and then driven to where we want to go! On the other hand though don't blindly trust anyone, be wise and be careful, along the way you will make Korean friends here, who have much to offer and who will teach you about the amazing customs and lifestyles that they have. You will also find there is a large foreign community of many nationalities, all in a similar situation to you, so support is easy to find if you need it, or if not drinking buddies are generally only a phone call away.
