The Korean Peninsula extends southward from the northeast part of the Asian continent. The country has a long history and proud tradition. Buddhism and Confucianism have influenced the nation's society and culture.
Koreans, like many other Asian peoples, are descendants of the Mongolian Tungus stock. They differ from the neighboring Japanese and Chinese, however, in that Koreans are a homogeneous ethnic group with their own language, culture, and customs.
Over the last several decades, Korea has transformed herself from an agrarian society to an industrial leader on the world economic scene. Progress is being made in education, science and technology and social welfare. In 2002 South Korea has co-hosted, the FIFA World Cup

Religious Groups
South Korea: Basic Facts South Korea: Society "Koreans, like other East Asians, have traditionally been eclectic rather than exclusive in their religious commitments. Their religious outlook has not been conditioned by a single, exclusive faith but by a combination of indigenous beliefs and creeds imported into Korea." (Unless stated otherwise, all quotations come from the Library of Congress Country Studies/Area HandbookSouth Korea) Buddhist Christianity (48%) "Roman Catholic missionaries did not arrive in Korea until 1794, a decade after the return of the first baptized Korean from a visit to Beijing. However, the writings of the Jesuit missionary, Matteo Ricci, who was resident at the imperial court in Beijing, had been brought to Korea from China in the seventeenth century. It appears that scholars of the Sirhak, or practical learning, school were interested in these writings. Largely because converts refused to perform Confucian ancestor rites, the government prohibited the proselytization of Christianity. Some Catholics were executed during the early nineteenth century, but the anti-Christian law was not strictly enforced.

    K. Heldman , December 19, 1996
    Itaewon - A GI Camp-town
A mile or so outside of Yongsan U.S. Army Garrison in central Seoul, past the tourist shops and street vendors selling Bulls, Raiders, et al., apparel, past the Burger King and the newly-opened Orange Julius and down a series of narrow roadways packed wit h American soldiers who are falling in and out of scores of ramshackle clubs - Cadillac Bar, Love Cupid, Texas Club, Boston Club, the King Club, the Palladium, the Grand Ole' Opry - is one of the 180 GI camp-towns that exist outside of every significantly sized military base in South Korea. Or, in the clever catchy jargon of the 37,000 U.S. troops stationed here to help keep the peace - Downrange. On any given night in Itaewon women in prostitution costume hang out club doors soliciting GIs; one part come on, one part contempt. An old Korean woman, hands clasped behind her back, spends the night strolling up and down Hooker Hill, approaching young GIs in their downy sports jackets asking "Lady?" as the GI, after questioning How much? and How old? follows her up the hill and down an alley. Later in the barracks the soldiers imitate mockingly, "Suckee, Suckee, fuck, I do everything, I go home with you," clinging to the full metal jacket fantasy that they're still occupying forces in the hooch village. A drunk troop is screaming at his even drunker buddy who is up against the wall occasionally vomiting "Yo, let's go, these are American girls, not slant eyes. American girls!" A black soldier is dragged by military police out of a packed bar into a pack ed street screaming "Why me? Why me? What about him?" then breaking loose from the MPs who are asking for his ID card and unit commander and answering his own question bitterly, "Because I'm a nigger."

Don't Leave Home Without It (or an updated version)!

This book answers many common questions about Korean culture. With humor, insight, and understanding, it explains why Koreans do the things they do, especially those things that boggle foreigners staying in Korea (the scoop on personal space, ettiquette with strangers, formal language, work relationships, etc.). It is, understandibly, OUTDATED. (I believe there is an updated version available, which I haven't read yet.) Read it anyway, if you are going to Korea. You will be prepared for the cultural conflicts you run into; You just might not run into as many differences as the book lead you to expect. Highly recommended!

    A truly wonderful guidebook
    Fabulously helpful.

I used this book to learn how to read Hangulwhich opened MANY doorsto plan many of my excursions, and to get places when nothing else worked. I was pleasantly surprised to find that even some details as precise as bus routes got me where I wanted to go, and the detailed information was much more informative and trustworthy than the tour guides I infrequently used. I wouldn't advise anyone to depend on any guidebook for things as ephermal as restaurant and bus line information, but in a pinch, this one worked just fine.
    This book is Great.
The Moon Travel South Korean Handbook is one of the finest travelbooks and despite its age remains the best guide to seeing anything of interest to see on the peninsula. I am Korean and I use this guide when I tour temples or others attractions here.
Posters on this forum complain there are not enough refence to hotels and restaurants but dont realize that in Korea restaurants and many hotels come and go so fast that this information would be useless before the book hit the presses.

Sometimes travel makes it happen, even on weekend getaways to the environs of mountain hermitages of South Korea. Walsh writes, "This is bliss. I am the only Westerner traveling today as always, but whereas during the week I am detached, now I feel I belong. My weariness of heightened cynicism is replaced by a tempered tranquillity, my spirit found by renunciation. To me this is what experiencing a foreign culture is all about. I have done nothing uniquely Korean on my journey, but my self-assurance is sufficient. I ask the bus driver in my limited Korean how long the stop is for. I already know – it’s always the same – but right now my self-love is smothering my self-consciousness. While in the toilet, I observe my appearance – why don’t I have a girlfriend?" - "So, before long, I found myself on a Korean Air 747 soaring over the Arctic, on the way to teach at a private school that I had never seen or heard of before. Though it didn’t seem so at first, moving to Korea turned out to be one of the best career moves I ever made." David Ritchie supplies readers with information about living and working in Korea. He lives and works in Seoul. He writes the “SeoulTalk” column for Seoulscope, the city’s entertainment magazine. His 16 published books include Will America Survive? (Cambridge India, 2000).

Korean society is based on the tenets of Confucianism, a system of ethics developed in China around 500 BC. Confucianism is big on devotion and respect - for parents, family, friends and those in positions of authority. Confucius also emphasised justice, peace, education, reform and humanitarianism. Many Koreans attribute their country's remarkable success in recent decades to this attitude. In modern Korean society, Confucianism is most noticeable in relations between people. The Five Relationships prescribe behaviour between ruler and subject, father and son, husband and wife, old and young, and between friends. If you fall outside any of these relationships, you do not, effectively, exist. Many travellers to Korea find the locals rude: they're probably not; chances are they just haven't noticed you. Once you're introduced to someone, you'll fall within the rules for friends and things will start looking up. The South Koreans have turned their hand to just about any art form you can name. Traditional music is similar to that of Japan and China, with an emphasis on strings. The two main forms are the stately
