K - Religion
O - Large Cities (Flat Plains)
R - Mountains
E - Rice (Agriculture - Flat Plains) A - Water (Yellow Sea) Korea's larger cities are very modern. The billboard on the building at the far left is a video wall about 30 x 60 feet. (See inset at right.) The monetary system of Korea uses the WON. One U.S. dollar = 1,111 WON (Apr. 2000), so 10,000 WON (at Left) = $9.00 This is their largest bill. The billboard at the left was for the movie City of Angels Off the coast of Korea there are nearly 3,000 islands of various sizes. There is 2,413 km of coastline. Therefore, fishing is one of Korea's major industries. The eastern side of Korea rises steeply to the mountains and then there is a gradual slope to the flat plains on the west and south where the larger cities can be found.

Japanese pop culture invades South Korea
Young South Koreans are packing games rooms to shake and shimmy to Japanese video games January 11, 2000 Web posted at: 12:16 p.m. HKT (0416 GMT) SEOUL, South Korea Just three months after South Korea lifted its ban on Japanese music and movies, Japanese pop culture which has swept across much of East Asia has taken South Korea by storm. Younger South Koreans are packing into music and video shops to check out the latest hits from Japan. Bands like Speed and singing sensation Utada Hikaru are hugely popular. Their albums often outsell those by their South Korean counterparts.

The Korean Peninsula extends for about 1,000 kilometers southward from the northeast part of the Asian continent and consists of the Korean Peninsula and over 3,400 islands. The peninsula and all of its associated islands lie between 33¡ÆN and 43¡ÆN parallels and 124¡ÆE and 132¡ÆE meridians. The northernmost point is Yupojin in Onsong-gun, North Hamgyong Province, and the southernmost point is Marado Island, Cheju Province. The westernmost point is Maando Island in Yongchon-gun, North Pyongan Province, and the easternmost is Tokdo Islets in Ullunggun, North Kyongsang Province. The standard meridian of the peninsula is 135¡ÆE, so Seoul local time is nine hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
The Amnok (Yalu) River and the Tuman (Tumen) River border both China and Russia to the north and Japan is just across the East Sea. Since 1945, as a byproduct of the Cold War, the peninsula has been divided at the 38th parallel into the Republic of Korea, or South Korea, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, more commonly known as North Korea.
Lacking formidable land or sea barriers along its borders and occupying a central position among East Asian nations, the Korean Peninsula has served as a cultural bridge between the mainland and the Japanese archipelago. Korea contributed greatly to the development of Japan by transmitting both Indian Buddhist and Chinese Confucian culture, art, and religion.

K-Pop
Korea has its own pop industry with native singers. Many of the Korean pop stars and pop groups are well known in East Asia and other parts of Asia . K-pop often emulates American pop music, and usually features young, sexy performers. It is a highly profitable industry, and in 2004, the 17 year old singer BoA earned a US $9 million profit in a single tour. http://www.jpopmusic.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42016 The emergence of the group Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992 marked a turning point for Korean popular music, as the group incorporated elements of American popular musical genres of rap, rock, and techno into its music. The tremendous success of Seo Taiji and Boys in Korea and such similarly experimental groups as Panic set the trend for the present generation of K-pop groups and artists. Following Seo Taiji and Boys, dance-oriented acts were dominant in the Korean popular music scene of the 1990s. Recently, rock music has made some headway into the mainstream, with acts like Yoon Do-hyun Band gaining national recognition.
