Country Info South Korea Introduction South Korea General Data South Korea Maps South Korea Culture ... South Korea Time and Date South Korea Culture Back to Top South Korea's homogeneous population shares a common ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage. National self-image is, on one level, unambiguously defined by the convergence of territorial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural identities. Yet intense feelings of nationalism, so evident in athletic events like the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Olympic Games held in Seoul, revealed anxiety as well as pride concerning South Korea's place in the world. More than Western peoples and even more than the Japanese, South Korean individuals are inclined to view themselves as a tightly knit national community with a common destiny. In a rapidly changing world, however, it is often difficult for them to define exactly what being a South Korean is. To outsiders, the intense concern with identity is perhaps difficult to understand; it reflects a history of subordinate relations to powerful foreign states and the tragedy of national division after World War II. Many modernized, urban-dwelling South Koreans embark on a search for the "essence" of their culture, which commonly expresses itself as hostility to foreign influences. For example, the poet Kim Chi-ha, whose opposition to the Park regime in the 1970s was a model for a younger generation of dissidents, attacked the government as much for its neglect of traditional values as for its antidemocratic tendencies.

Korean society is based on the tenets of Confucianism, a system of ethics developed in China around 500 BC. Confucianism is big on devotion and respect - for parents, family, friends and those in positions of authority. Confucius also emphasised justice, peace, education, reform and humanitarianism. Many Koreans attribute their country's remarkable success in recent decades to this attitude. In modern Korean society, Confucianism is most noticeable in relations between people. The Five Relationships prescribe behaviour between ruler and subject, father and son, husband and wife, old and young, and between friends. If you fall outside any of these relationships, you do not, effectively, exist. Many travellers to Korea find the locals rude: they're probably not; chances are they just haven't noticed you. Once you're introduced to someone, you'll fall within the rules for friends and things will start looking up. The South Koreans have turned their hand to just about any art form you can name. Traditional music is similar to that of Japan and China, with an emphasis on strings. The two main forms are the stately chongak and the folksier minsogak . Among the folk dances are drum dances ( mugo - a hectic, lively court dance where the participants wear drums around their necks), mask dances (

    South Korea History
Korea has roots dating back as far as 4000 BC. Perhaps the country's obsession with serenity came from its location: It has long been surrounded by powerful and intrusive neighbors. After the cultural unification of Korea in AD 668, the country was devastated by the invading armies of Japan in 1592 and the Manchus three decades later. Korea responded by turning its back on the world and developing its own unique culture in isolation, becoming the "Hermit Kingdom" of Asia. Its solitude was eventually shattered by Japan, whose armies occupied the nation from 1910 until the end of World War II. Although the Japanese did improve the country's infrastructure, they proved to be harsh overlords, creating an enmity that remains today. The postwar joy that followed liberation proved to be short-lived. By 1950, Korea was enveloped in a violent struggle for control between the U.N. forces supporting the government of the south and the Soviet- and Chinese-backed communist government of the north. For three years war raged across the entire length of the peninsula, reaching a stalemate at roughly the 38th parallel. A cease-fire was called in 1953, though no permanent peace treaty has ever been signed. (A nonaggression pact was finally reached in December 1991.) But the presence of the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), the heavily fortified no-man's-land separating the two Koreas, seems to have little effect on daily life. Only a few miles away, farmers cultivate rice in peaceful fields while housewives preserve vegetables in tile-roofed houses.

The country is located between China and Japan. It was once a large unified country that had governed territories in Manchuria as recently as 1908, and some territory in present-day Siberia. At one point, it was the centre for the very best silk in the world, as noted in ancient Chinese scripts. Korea was also known for having the world's best goldsmiths during the 7th-8th centuries. The publication technique of movable type was invented in Korea in 1232, long before Gutenberg introduced the concept in Europe. These types used Chinese characters and were initially mainly used to mass-produce Buddhist sutras.

South Korea South Korea is a country swathed in green, prodding its stony fingers skyward, and the Koreans are a people obsessed with nature, and with mountains in particular. Wherever you travel, you'll see them out in the open air, clad in the latest adventure fashions, pushing ever onward and upward. It's a miracle that South Korea still exists. With China looming to its west and Japan nudging it from the east, it's no wonder the country has played unwilling host to centuries of war games. But no matter how many times its neighbours try to swallow it, South Korea manages to survive intact. South Koreans attribute their indefatigable culture to the binding agents of Confucianism, language and pride. The stunning landscape has also played a big part in creating a cohesive Korean identity. The Bandwidth Capital of the World
In Seoul, the broadband age is in full swing - online games have become a national sport, and cybercafes are the new singles bars.
By J. C. Herz AT FIRST GLANCE, Burrow a bit, though, down the alleys, up flights of stairs, or into the corners of malls, and you find something that sets Seoul apart and fosters its passion for broadband: online game rooms, or PC baangs, as they are called here. There are 26,000 of them, tucked into every spare sliver of real estate. Filled with late-model PCs packed tightly into rows, these rabbit warrens of high-bandwidth connectivity are where young adults gather to play games, video-chat, hang out, and hook up.
A Starcraft competition is broadcast live from one of three Korean cable stations dedicated to gaming.
When it comes to rolling out bandwidth, South Korea's population density is an advantage. Seventy percent of its citizens live in the seven largest cities, in residential towers nestled close to DSL switching stations. The capital city of Seoul itself accounts for a quarter of the population. To put this in perspective, consider that South Korea's national communications backbone consists of 13,670 miles of optical fiber. Last year, Verizon laid down 20,500 miles of optical fiber in West Virginia alone. This fact doesn't make the Korean information infrastructure any less impressive. But the country does have an easier job on its hands than say, Indonesia, or the Philippines, or Mexico.
