Library Certification Frequently Asked Questions What does a school librarian do? As our schools prepare students for the Information Age and as technology changes the information landscape, the nature of librarianship changes. While 20 years ago librarians were primarily “keepers of the books,” today’s librarians are teachers, instructional partners, information specialists, and program administrators. For more information, see AASL’s “ Roles and Responsibilities of the School Library Media Specialist What are the requirements for certification as a school librarian in South Dakota? If you currently hold a teaching certificate, you need 18 semester hours in library coursework to add a K-12 library endorsement to your certificate. These 18 semester hours must include classes in the following areas:
    • library media methodology selection of print and non-print materials integration of media into the instructional process administration and management of human and media resources cataloging
If you currently hold a Masters in Library Science, you may obtain a limited certificate that allows you to be a librarian, but not a classroom teacher.

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

South Dakota - Return to the "What's Happening in the States?" Page - Updated April 2, 1998 South Dakota - At one time South Dakota was piloting a formal, state-wide new teacher induction program that provided both support and evaluation of first year teachers. The evaluation component was for purposes of granting teacher certification. A lack of funding for all South Dakota state programs, however, led to funding cuts. In the law that provided the requirements for the State's new teacher system and the appropriation for the pilots was eventually repealed and the funding for the pilot programs was halted. Checks for a state beginning teacher program in South Dakota in both and in confirm that there is no state-mandated or supported induction program. A state contact person is Lynda Sederstrom, at 605-773-3553 If you are aware of incorrect statements in this material OR if you can add authoritative new information concerning mentoring and induction in the various United States, please contact Barry Sweeny with that information. The Secretary of Education is required by statute to publish a list of nationally recognized accrediting agencies and associations which the Secretary determines to be reliable authorities as to the quality of training offered by educational institutions and programs. The National Advisory Committee on Accreditation and Institutional Eligibility assists the Secretary in determining which accrediting bodies should be listed. Accrediting bodies that achieve recognition are reviewed at least every 4 years thereafter. The commissions of the regional associations and the national institutional and specialized accrediting agencies which are recognized by the Secretary have no legal control over educational institutions or programs. They promulgate standards of quality or criteria of institutional excellence and approve or admit to membership those institutions that meet the standards of criteria.

    39. Policy Update: South Dakota: Getting Specific - Quality Counts '99
After three years of compromises and changes, the south dakota state school board adopted a new set of teachercertification rules last year that goes into

    South Dakota:
Getting Specific by Karen L. Abercrombie Vital Statistics Public school districts Public schools K-12 enrollment Minority students Children in poverty Students with disabilities $647.7 million Annual K-12 expenditures
(all revenue sources) fter receiving criticism last year from national groups that rate standards and within the state for not having a strong system of academic standards in place, South Dakota education officials worked to come up with more specific content standards. Many said the state's existing content standards were too general. The original plan had been to provide districts with a broad structure for standards from which they could then develop specific standards to fit their local needs. But, without much direction from the state, few bothered to adopt standards. South Dakota rises to the challenge and rewrites standards in four subject areas. Republican Gov. William J. Janklow challenged the state education department in 1997 to rewrite the standards so that they were clearer, specific, more demanding, measurable, and comprehensive. The department responded last year, and now content standards are available in four core curriculum areas: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Districts must adopt and implement course guidelines for language arts and math that meet the state's academic-content standards by July of this year. Course guidelines for social studies and science must be adopted by July 2000.
