Graduate Student General Information
A tradition of excellence in science and engineering since 1885

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology offers graduate degree programs at the master’s and doctoral levels. The graduate program provides opportunities for advanced study and research in the fields of engineering and science. Each individual program of study is designed to broaden and extend the student’s knowledge within the chosen field, to develop the power of independent critical thinking, and to promote the skill of individual and cooperative research.
A master’s degree program was authorized at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in October, 1935, and the first degree was granted in 1937. Permission to start Ph.D. programs during the 1967-68 academic year was granted in January 1967 to the Department Geology and Geological Engineering. In June, 1983, the Board of Regents authorized the doctorate in Materials Engineering and Science. The Board authorized the Atmospheric, Environmental, and Water Resources Ph.D. program (cooperative with South Dakota State University) in October of 1993 for start-up at the 1994 spring semester.
The Graduate Office was organized formally in 1950-51. The policies of the Graduate Office are formulated with the assistance of the Graduate Education and Research Council, which is advisory to the Graduate Dean. The policies are approved by the faculty and the Regents of Higher Education for South Dakota and are administered by the Graduate Dean. The Graduate Education and Research Council consists of one faculty representative from each college, the dean of each college, two (2) members appointed by the Faculty Advisory Council, and the Graduate Dean or his or her designee. The Vice President for Academic Affairs serves in an ex-officio capacity.

PROJECT REACH—A South Dakota Success! Raising Educator Awareness Concerning Health Project REACH, a breast and cervical cancer prevention and awareness program developed by the National Education Association Health Information Network (NEA HIN), became the first health-related program of the South Dakota Education Association/NEA. South Dakota was one of the five states selected to take part in the program. Breast and cervical cancer awareness programs are important for school employees since some studies found that teachers may have a higher rate of death from breast cancer than women in other occupations. “This unique training opportunity is designed to give school employees the skills, resources and support needed to design local cancer education programs in their school community”, explained Rena Large, NEA HIN. Many steps were taken to get Project REACH off the ground. Janet Wilson, Executive Director of SDEA/NEA OEI formed an advisory committee and a local planning committee that helped establish goals and determine membership needs. Support and assistance of other key partners - the American Cancer Society, that provides outreach and community education programs, and the South Dakota BCCEDP, that coordinates service providers, screenings and tracking of women who qualify for services such as mammograms and PAP smears, were also essential in making this program a success. These partners also guided OEI in selecting the target area – the southeastern part of South Dakota.

History Highlights Statehood
"The people and territorial leaders had been working on statehood continuously since 1870. In 1889, South and North Dakota finally became states with Arthur C. Mellette as the first governor of South Dakota. Pierre was selected ad the temporary capital. The first year of statehood was a very hard year due to severe drought, and the fact that many of the homesteaders were not practical farmers and had not accumulated a surplus to combat the hard times. As a result, the first state census showed a population of 328,808, a considerable loss from the previous census. "The first Legislature place the five institutions of higher learning under the administration of the Board of Regents. These included the University at Vermillion, the Agricultural College at Brookings, the School of Mines at Rapid City, and the normal Schools at Madison and Springfield. "Meantime in 1889, President Gorrie, after having served two years as president, submitted his resignation. The Board of Education, consisting of Dr. A. E. Clough, J. A. Trow, Madison; G. L. Pinkham, Miller; John Norton, Webster; and George M. Evarts, Sully County, offered the presidency to General W. H. H. Beadle. The offer was made largely on the recommendation of George A. McFarland, who was a leading South Dakota educator and a good friend of General Beadle. At the time of the offer, General Beadle was the superintendent of the Indian Industrial Training School, so when the opportunity to return to South Dakota presented itself, he gladly accepted."
