May 29, 2001 (WEBSTER) - Sen. Tom Daschle visited with students and educators Tuesday while touring ExplorNet's Computer Recycling (CPR) class in the Webster School District.
The class teaches students to build, repair and upgrade computers. In addition to gaining hands-on skills, CPR students can often provide tech-support within their district. Upon completion of the course, students are prepared to become A+ certified. This certification is nationally recognized as the industry standard for computer service technicians. The student-built computers can be deployed to classrooms or media centers throughout the school districts so all students benefit from the technology. CPR was field tested in Webster, Pierre, and Aberdeen during the 2001 school year. Six new schools will join the ExplorNet program in the fall. Training for the new slate of instructors is set to begin in July. The program operates in partnership with the South Dakota Department of Education and Cultural Affairs.

The health of young people, and the adults they will become, is critically linked to the health-related behaviors they adopt. Certain behaviors that are often established during youth contribute markedly to today’s major killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and injuries. These behaviors include tobacco use; unhealthy dietary habits; inadequate physical activity; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that can result in HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancies; and behaviors that result in violence and unintentional injuries (e.g., driving while intoxicated). These behaviors place young people at increased risk for serious health problems, both now and in the future.
Health Challenges
  • During the past 20 years, decreases in physical activity coupled with unhealthy eating has resulted in a doubling of the percentage of children and adolescents who are overweight.

CDC Gets Advice From Teens
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) often relies on world-renowned scientists and academics for advice on how to improve the nation’s health. On September 26, 2000 CDC director Jeffrey P. Koplan, MD, MPH, will welcome South Dakota high school students Clarissa Barnes and Meghan Storm to his office to learn how CDC can increase student interest in science. "I decided very young that I would become a doctor because I was so inspired by my pediatrician. Now, I want to find ways to inspire more young people to become involved in the fascinating world of science. I hope this meeting will assist in doing that," Dr. Koplan said. "This will be my first exposure to an operation involving a partnership between the government and the scientific community. I have no idea what to expect and I’m very anxious to learn how things operate at CDC," said student Megan Storm.

Information Skills for an Information Society: A Review of Research. ERIC Digest.
This digest is based on Information Skills for an Information Society: A Review of Research, by Carol Collier Kuhlthau. Living in an "information society" implies dealing with a barrage of information on a daily basis. Our success and survival depend upon our abilities to locate, analyze, and use information skillfully and appropriately. Yet, in recent years, reports have documented the "functional illiteracy" of many adults, who are unable to manage the information they need. Internationally, educators have begun research and development of means to increase information literacy. In schools, administrators, teachers, and library media specialists are working together to develop strategies that will enable school children to gain competence in using information. Library school media centers are key places where skills and resources are integrated to provide students with access to information about subjects across the curriculum. In addition, information technologies and information literacy programs have been developed for use in schools. Public education's previously inadequate responses to the dynamic changes taking place in society were brought to national attention by the 1983 report, "A Nation At Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform." As awareness increased of children's need to be able to manage information, several major developments in education occurred. These developments have been categorized as belonging to three groups: (1) acknowledgement of the need for a more integrated approach to curriculum development; (2) recognition that larger problems lie beyond the immediate one of providing students with basic computer literacy; and (3) adoption of a holistic approach to education centered around fundamental problem-solving techniques (Information and computing recommendations, 1986).
