Geoff Hansen captures the whimsy of a dog's life
By Melissa MacKenzie Photographer Geoff Hansen's work has been appearing in newspapers like the Boston Globe, New York Times and Newsday for the last 10 years, but now the West Hartford resident has taken a giant step forward into the sometimes-awkward world of book publishing. About six years ago, Hansen acquired an auburn and white beagle puppy named Lucy. For fun, he took black and white shots of Lucy as she was growing up, made postcard-sized prints and sent them to friends. His friends loved them. "They said, 'It's on our fridge! You've got to do something with this!'" recalled Hansen, following a recent book signing at the Quechee Library. The book-signing scene at the library was an author's dream. The 50 copies of "My Life As a Dog: The Many Moods of Lucy, the Dog of a Thousand Faces," the book Hansen finally wrote, sold out within half an hour. Grownups and children who did not arrive early enough patiently lined up at the librarian's desk and placed orders for the book, even as more customers kept coming into the library. "Cool! The Beagle Has Landed!" crowed a small boy, reading aloud the red bumper sticker that comes with the book.

Magazine Published on Sundays Features: Magazine Literary Review Life Metro Plus ... Magazine Survival of the fattest Even as the United States advocates an end to subsidies in other countries, its new farm bill is laying out huge subsidies to media moghul Ted Turner, a Rockefeller and other assorted billionaires among others. Noted journalist P. SAINATH compares this to the situation in India where farmers, already struggling to make ends meet, are being attacked for `wasteful subsidies'. REMEMBER all that stuff about the "wasteful subsidies" the Indian State throws at its farmers? And all that silence about who really gets things like the fertiliser subsidies? A list that includes some of the top business houses in the country. Remember that "end-the-subsidy-Raj" refrain of our brave new world economists? Only a select few were exempted from it. For instance, the millionaires who together owe India's banks Rs.1,00,000 crores or more. Most farmers own two acres of land or less. A farmer making Rs. 4,000 off an acre in Kalahandi (around $80) thinks himself lucky that year. In Telangana, he could celebrate. In northern Karnataka, he might even send his child to school.

Certainly, federal and state franchise laws and regulations are largely responsible for facilitating franchising's explosive growth and success over the past 25 years. Many folks forget that, by the late 1960s and '70s, the words "franchise" and "fraud" had almost become synonymous. Indeed, the situation was so bad that, just a year before Entrepreneur 60 Minutes did a "takedown" piece on franchising, featuring a scam perpetrated by an outfit known as "Wild Bill's Family Restaurants," the principals of which were ultimately indicted by a federal grand jury. In fact, as Entrepreneur Entrepreneur And franchisors recognize the laws' effectiveness. "Probably the best thing I've seen is a requirement of having a disclosure document for franchising," says Subway's DeLuca. "It helps to clarify and spell out the details of the relationships, so there's less likelihood of miscommunication or confusion. The fact that everybody gets a disclosure document is really important." Harrington certainly notices the change at the FTC. "We see fewer things going wrong, less deception, certainly a lot less outright fraud in connection with franchising," she says. "We see a lot of fraud in connection with the sale of business opportunities, but not in franchising. The environment is a lot cleaner than it was."

Gag order in reform school abuse case upheld Saying that the media "has no constitutional right to information about a trial beyond what is seen and heard in the courtroom," the state Supreme Court issued an unsigned unanimous opinion on May 10 upholding a trial judge's gag order on all trial participants in a prominent case involving allegations of manslaughter and child abuse in a state reform school. "If publicity during the proceedings threatens the fairness of the trial, a new trial should be ordered," the court stated. "But we must remember that reversals are but palliatives; the cure lies in those remedial measures that will prevent the prejudice at its inception. . . Collaboration between counsel and the press as to information affecting the fairness of a criminal trial is not only subject to regulation, but is highly censurable and worthy of disciplinary measures." On July 21, 1999, 14-year-old Gina Score was found dead at a state boot camp in Plankinton after participating in a forced run. Gov. William J. Janklow told the media that he believed that the State of South Dakota was liable regarding the events surrounding Score's death. The state then filed criminal charges against Raelene Layne and Tamara Wagaman, former employees of the school, alleging manslaughter and felony child abuse. Janklow then told members of the media that the charged former employees were at fault and that they had acted outside the school's prescribed policies.

US Congressman charged with manslaughter over biker's death in intersection crash
South Dakota Congressman Bill Janklow has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in the deadly crash that claimed the life of 55-year-old Minnesota motorcyclist Randolph Scott. The accident occurred when the legislator ran a stop sign at a rural intersection near Sioux Falls on August 16. Police investigators determined that Rep. Janklow's Cadillac proceeded through the intersection at a speed estimated to have been between 70-75 mph in the 55 mph zone, and continued into the path of Scott's Harley-Davidson without stopping, giving the rider no chance to avoid the fatal collision. Janklow, 63, has a long history of speeding, and his driving exploits have been near legendary in his home state during his many years of public service. At one point during his 30-year political career, the four-term governor racked up 12 speeding tickets in four years. Janklow served as attorney general from 1974-78 before being elected to four terms as governor, from 1979-1986 and 1995-2002, and was elected to the state's lone House seat last year. During his tenure as governor, the pugnacious Republican was credited with elevating the Sturgis rally into a tourist attraction, and in 2001 he was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame.

Matthew Testa '91 crusades to save Yellowstone's roving herds in his documentary The Buffalo War Ghostliness and Grief
Associate Creative Writing Professor Debra Spark tackles race relations and the ghostly realm in her mystery The Ghost of Bridgetown
From our shelf to yours. By Alicia MacLeay '97
Lakota Sioux "buffalo walkers" cross a bridge over the Yellowstone River during a 500-mile march protesting the slaughter of bison that stray outside Yellowstone National Park Every winter, bison from America's last free-roaming herd leave the protection of Yellowstone National Park in search of grazing land. Since 1985 more than 3,000 bison that tested positive for the disease brucellosis have been killed by Montana's Department of Livestock, which maintains it is protecting local cattle herds. During the winter of 1996-97 1,000 bison were killed. The controversial practice has caused a clash involving government officials, ranchers, conservationists and Native Americans. "Something wasn't right," said Matthew Testa '91, a former Jackson Hole, Wyo., newspaper reporter. "People were very concerned." While regional and national media covered the issue in 1997, it would be three years before Testa would examine the controversy on film as producer, director and cinematographer of The Buffalo War , an award-winning hour-long documentary of the conflict.
