The South Dakota Newspaper Project The Gary Inter State office, 1885. Gary was the first railhead in the part of Dakota Territory that became South Dakota, according to Robert Karolevitz, author of With a Shirt Tail Full of Type: The Story of Newspapering in South Dakota. Newspapers Tell the South Dakota Story
Red Cloud, Wild Bill Hickok, Crazy Horse and Calamity Jane are more than American legends. In South Dakota, they are yesterday's news. Their lives and deaths run in typeset lines down the columns of the state's historic newspapers. Obituaries and articles stretching back to 1859 record the lives of European immigrants who settled the grasslands, of Indians who fought to keep ancestral hunting grounds, of Old West characters who swarmed to the Black Hills seeking the sparkle of gold. Notable South Dakotans who wrote the news include L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , and Carrie Ingalls Swanzey, sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder of Little House on the Prairie fame.

South Dakota Board of Regents
S erving as a connection between higher education and state government, the South Dakota Board of Regents governs the six institutions that make up the public higher education system in the state. The combined headcount for the institutionsBlack Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, South Dakota State University, and the University of South Dakotais just under 26,000 students. The board office is located in Pierre, in the center of the state on the Missouri River. The South Dakota Board of Regents is a governing board, which means that it has control over all major systemwide and institutional decisions. The board's operating budget is $306 million, which includes funds for K-12 special schools for the deaf and the blind and visually impaired that the board also oversees. South Dakota is a rural state that does not tax income and has no major industry. The public higher education system fights to stay out of the lowest ranking nationwide in average faculty salaries, yet faculty teach eight courses a year while maintaining average class sizes. So, though it spans two time zones and as much as 455 miles between campuses, the university system is a unified one, sharing its scarce state resources. The Board of Regents takes a coordinated approach to many of the university functions, from systemwide databases to offering collaborative majors. The board works creatively to get the most out of its funding.

For Immediate Release: Friday, May 9, 2003 South Dakota Library Network to Switch Software RAPID CITY - The South Dakota Board of Regents today approved a contract for installing new software to improve the South Dakota Library Network's (SDLN's) operation, replacing an outdated system. The Regents operate the library network on behalf of member libraries across the state. The system's $1.3 million cost will be covered by a $500,000 federal grant, along with user fees paid by the libraries. "Anticipating the need for new system software, SDLN member libraries already set aside about $800,000 in reserve for the purchase," said Regents' Executive Director Robert T. Tad Perry. Perry said the $1.3 million price tag includes software, hardware, training, and implementation services. The new software comes from Ex Libris, a worldwide supplier of software solutions and related services for libraries and information centers. The company's flagship product, ALEPH 500, is a market leader in the field of library automation for higher education, as well as for public, national, and research libraries, consortia and national networks, and large corporations.
