Even Start
  • Programs in South Dakota Announcement - Even Start Funds Available " Literacy is a powerful deterrent to poverty and dependency. Family literacy helps by breaking the cycle of poverty at its root. Intergenerational literacy programs provide both adults and children with essential literacy skills and life skills. As their parents become more self- sufficient, the children acquire an education which puts them on track to a more promising future. And that is not only to their individual benefit; it is in the interest of all of us." (US Representative Tom Sawyer, Ohio) Even Start is a federally funded family literacy program integrating early childhood, adult education, and parenting education through intensive coordination of existing services and creation of a new range of services. The state receives an annual allocation. Individual projects are funded for four years. A local match is required in increasing amounts of 10% each year of the project. Among the collaborative entities providing services, public schools are primary participants. Following are the program characteristics: 1. Participants are eligible if there is an adult who qualifies for an adult education program under the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act and is a parent of a child less than 8 years of age.
