    Drought

Did you know? West Nile Virus
Mosquito populations do not shrink during drought. The opposite is true, especially in western South Dakota, where the species of mosquito that carries West Nile virus actually thrives in dry conditions.
In 2003, South Dakota reported the highest per capita human caseload of West Nile virus in the nation, with 1,038 cases and 14 deaths. SDSU and the South Dakota Department of Health monitor mosquito numbers and have mounted an aggressive educational campaign targeted to the general public, school children, the elderly, and cities and municipalities.

BRYCE HEALY - School and Public Lands
For the past four years I've had the distinct honor of serving South Dakota as the Deputy Commissioner of School and Public Lands. In that time, I have laid the groundwork and have gained the experience that is needed for success in being elected Commissioner of School and Public Lands. I plan on taking my vision and track record as part of a positive campaign to the people of this great state. The Commissioner has an extremely important role in South Dakota. This is where a quality education, sustainable economic development, our important natural resources, and public outdoor recreational activities all come together. My vision is to ensure future generations of South Dakotans will increasingly benefit from the foundation set in place today.

National organization issues report on higher education By Jason Lemke - Campus Reporter If the South Dakota system of higher education had to take this report card home to mom and dad, they could probably count on doing some extra chores for a week or two. The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education recently released "Measuring Up 2000: The State-by-State Report Card for Higher Education." The report rates each state's higher education system on preparation, participation, affordability, completion, and benefits. Each state was given a letter grade for each category. South Dakota received a grade of "C" in the area of preparation, which includes factors such as high school completion, the number of high school students taking advanced math and science classes, and K-12 test scores. "We frequently discuss the need for high school students in South Dakota to take more upper level math, science, and English courses," John Hilpert, NSU President, said. "We're looking for ways to work with school districts to raise the level of preparation." A "C" was also the grade awarded to South Dakota in the area of participation, which measures the number of youth and adult members of the state's population who are enrolled in a college or university. South Dakota was on pace with the rest of the nation in the number of new high school graduates enrolled in postsecondary education. However, the state does lag behind in the number of adults enrolled at its institutions.

Health officials disagree on risk of mercury in vaccines
Melanie Brandert Argus Leader published: 6/7/2004 HULL, Iowa - Brady and Dylan Bonestroo appeared to be normal, happy and healthy babies for the first 18 months of their lives. They began walking at 9 or 10 months. They were good eaters. Brady was the outgoing one, meeting everyone at the front door and sitting in everyone's lap. But when their mother, Sindy, wrote in their baby books at 18 months and age 2, she noticed a difference. The boys spoke to each other in their own twin talk, but not to others. Brady became introverted and hid behind furniture when guests were present. Dylan had problems sitting still. They stopped eating many foods. Bonestroo and her husband, Lyle, didn't learn the twins had autism until they saw a Sioux Falls pediatric specialist. The twins' mother thinks that mercury used as a preservative in the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine caused the disorder in summer 1996.
