Subliminal Racism and Its Effect on Native Students In a book by Delores Huff entitled, To Live Heroically, Institutional Racism and American Indian Education, (SUNY Press, State University of New York Press) State University Plaza, Albany New York 12246, available through Barnes and Noble), the effects of institutional racism on Native students is a subject whose time has come and must not be denied. When asked why she thought there was such a high drop out rate the usual answers were given; alcoholism, unemployment and dysfunctional home lives. (A recent study has shown this to be a stereotypical answer and that in fact, these answers play no more a part in Native homes then in non-native homes.) When asked if she ever considered that perhaps there weren't enough role models in the school or promotion of famous or influential Native people in history or in the world today, she agreed that the curriculum was sorely lacking. When asked if there were posters of Native people with famous Native sayings on the walls, she agreed that was something that she would like to have but so far has not seen anything like that. When asked if she felt that Native students were more disruptive in the classroom, she said yes they were, and she added that she only recently had said to a friend of hers that the numbers don't lie. I then asked her if it wasn't possible that perhaps the problems arose from the fact that the behavior these all white teachers were expecting from the students was only deemed inappropriate because they were not acting like white children. I then asked her that even if it wasn't a conscious decision, didn't it seem to her to be a form of assimilation to have a school of Native children taught almost exclusively by non-native people who might not be aware of the differences in Native culture? She agreed that it could indeed be a problem.

The Missouri River divides the state into nearly equal portions having quite distinct soil characteristics; the portion east of the river being glacial clay, and the portion west being in part covered with a tenacious clay formed by the disintegration of Fort Pierre Shales, and the remainder with Laramie loam eroded from the western mountains. The population numbers 583,888 (1910) and is chiefly of American origin. The chief foreign elements are German and Scandinavian. There are about 18,000
