This staff is available to assist law enforcement agencies, school officials, and concerned citizens in understanding the dimensions of this problem and to confront specific incidents of school violence in their own communities. A Nationwide Problem Over the past decade, violent crime has increased substantially nationwide particularly among young people. A shocking number of such acts have occurred at school. According to the National School Safety Center, juveniles commit more than 3 million crimes in our schools each year. That's an average of about 1,700 per day. While the majority of these are thefts and other less-serious offenses, many are violent aggravated assault, rape, and even murder.

Search: For Release: September 15, 2003 FTC Charges South Carolina Board of Dentistry Agency Alleges Illegal Actions Deprived Children of Preventive Dental Care In 2000, the General Assembly amended legislation to make it easier for dental hygienists to provide preventive dental care services to children in schools, by removing the requirement of a pre-examination by a dentist within 45 days of the treatment. In January 2001, hygienists began providing cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants in South Carolina schools. In the six months that followed, licensed hygienists had screened over 19,000 children and provided cleanings, fluoride treatments, and other services to more than 4,000 children, including nearly 3,000 Medicaid-eligible children. The school-based services were more convenient for families, thereby dramatically increasing the number of children receiving adequate preventive dental care. The South Carolina State Board of Dentistry is the regulatory body charged with supervising the practices of dentistry and dental hygiene in South Carolina. The Board is not composed of disinterested regulators, however; instead, it consists of seven dentists, six of whom are elected by the licensed dentists in South Carolina, one dental hygienist, and one public member. Thus, the Board is dominated by members of the industry it regulates.

Home District And Community Services Office of Safe Schools and Youth Services Alternative Education Section ... CharterSch CHAPTER 40 Charter Schools Section This chapter may be cited as the 'South Carolina Charter Schools Act of 1996'. Section This chapter is enacted to: (1) improve student learning; (2) increase learning opportunities for students; (3) encourage the use of a variety of productive teaching methods; (4) establish new forms of accountability for schools; (5) create new professional opportunities for teachers, including the opportunity to be responsible for the learning program at the school site; and (6) assist South Carolina in reaching academic excellence. Section (A) In authorizing charter schools, it is the intent of the General Assembly to create a legitimate avenue for parents, teachers, and community members to take responsible risks and create new, innovative, and more flexible ways of educating all children within the public school system. The General Assembly seeks to create an atmosphere in South Carolina's public school systems where research and development in producing different learning opportunities is actively pursued and where classroom teachers are given the flexibility to innovate and the responsibility to be accountable. As such, the provisions of this chapter should be interpreted liberally to support the findings and goals of this chapter and to advance a renewed commitment by the State of South Carolina to the mission, goals, and diversity of public education.

DRAFT 2003 Legislative Platform and Position Statements South Carolina's challenge is to come together – to engage our public and find the spirit of coalition and collegiality as we propel our students to the level of achievement needed in the twenty-first century. The South Carolina Association of School Administrators calls upon itself and all who care about South Carolina's future to focus on continued educational improvement, to set aside particular interests and address collective responsibility, and once again, to engage our energies on our tomorrows. SCASA
Funding Public Education The General Assembly’s first priority must be adequate and equitable funding of Pre K-12 and adult education. The shortfall in funding is seriously jeopardizing ongoing improvements in the education of children and adults in South Carolina and negatively impacting the recruitment and retention of quality teachers.
    • Fund a base student cost equal to or exceeding the national average per pupil expenditure. Fund an adequate school construction program.
