Who and what to believe are confusing and frustrating decisions. These challenges call for creative educational solutions. The Facts In South Carolina, deaths from heart disease, cancer, and stroke are above the national average. High blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity affect the health of many adults and youth. All of these conditions can be related to poor dietary habits. Almost half of the food dollar is spent on food eaten away from home where wise dietary choices are frequently hard to make. The safety of food is a major concern to consumers. Research confirms that consumers need assistance in handling food at home, as this is often a source of foodborne illness. Families with limited resources find it difficult to afford an adequate and nutritious diet. Government assisted food programs are changing. Program Focus The goal of the Extension Food and Nutrition Program is to help South Carolina citizens make healthy food choices and handle food safety.
