Insight into fundamentalist Islamic communities
Professor of religious studies Dr. Kevin Lewis teaches and does research on religion and culture. In 1998, Lewis was a Fulbright senior lecturer in American literature at the Islamic University of Gaza. Drawing upon that experience of teaching alongside Palestinian colleagues in a fundamentalist, Hamas-supporting Islamic community and as a religion scholar, Lewis can discuss fundamentalist Islamic beliefs and attitudes with reporters. He also can provide insight into how Palestinian academics and students in Gaza view Western politics and culture and tensions within the Middle East. Lewis and his wife, Becky, who also taught at the IUG as a unpaid volunteer, are the only Westerners ever to teach at that young university in Gaza City. Office: 777-2561.

Cowpens National Battlefield
Cowpens National Battlefield commemorates a decisive battle that helped turn the tide of war in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. On this field on January 17, 1781, Daniel Morgan led his army of Continentals, militia and cavalry to a victory over Banastre Tarleton's force of British mililitary. The battle at the "Cow Pens" is recognized by historians as one of the most important of the American Revolution. Only nine months after the Battle of Cowpens, Cornwallis was forced to surrender his army to General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia. Vistitors may enjoy a walking trail and marked road tour, picnic grounds and a visitor center with exhibits, memorabilia and a multi-image slide presentation. South Carolina
One of the thirteen original colonies of the United States, has an area of 30,570 square miles throughout its 35 counties, with an extreme breadth of 235 miles and an extreme width of 215. It is bounded eastward by North Carolina and the Atlantic, with a coast line of 200 miles; Georgia lies to the west and North Carolina bounds it on the north. Columbia is the capital. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS South Carolina rises from marshland in its eastern tidewater section to a mountainous region in the extreme western portion of the state. The Pedee and the Santee are navigable rivers flowing into the Atlantic and reaching the sea through deltas in the marsh regions. It is probable that more than half of the state was at one time in dense timber. POPULATION The state is twenty-sixth in rank of population according to the census of 1910. The population in 1820 was 502,741; in 1840, 594,398; in 1860, 703,708; 1in 1880, 995,577; in 1900, 1,340,316; in 1910, 1,515,400. Beaufort County is the fifth county in the United States in point of density of negro population, having a percentage of 90.5. In 1790 South Carolina was second only to Virginia in the number of its slaves, having 107,097. The largest cities with their respective populations are as follows; Charleston, 58,833; Columbia, 26,319; Spartanburg, 17,517; Greenville, 15,741. RESOURCES EDUCATION For white children there are 2712 public schools in the state (1909) employing 933 men teachers and 3247 women, and reaching 153,807 pupils with an average attendance of 107,368. For negro children there are 2354, employing 894 men teachers and 1802 women, with an average attendance of 123,481. The total revenue for both white and negroes was $42,345,647.72; out of which there was expended $1,590,732.51 for whites and $308,153.16 for negroes. The state's per capita expenditure, according to enrolment, was in 1899, $4.90 for white, $1.42 for negro, $2.69 for both; in 1904, $6.88 for white, $1.47 for negro, $4.08 for both; in 1909, $10.34 for white, $1.70 for negro, $5.67 for both. There are 27 institutions of higher education for whites and 11 for negroes. Of the 27 institutions for whites, 5, non-sectarian, receive a total state support of $355,994.88; 5 are Presbyterian, 3 Methodist, 3

US: Gunpoint police raid at South Carolina school
By Jeff Riley 12 November 2003 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Over a dozen police officers in the town of Goose Creek, S.C., stormed into a crowded high school hallway on the morning of November 5, forcing 107 students down on their stomachs at gunpoint. No drugs were found and no arrests were made. The video shows one of the officers singling out a sitting student, throwing him to his side and pinning him down. Students and parents in the community were outraged by the raid. One parent, Nathaniel Ody, went to the police department Friday afternoon to file a complaint on behalf of his son, a senior basketball player, who was pulled from another section of the school and placed in the hallway in restraints. His son, he explained, complied, but was placed in cuffs anyway. This blatant attack on the constitutional rights of high school students takes place within a definite social and political context in South Carolina. The economic downturn of the past three years has had a devastating effect on the region.

The Magazine of South Carolina More Than a Mansion The state Governor's Mansion contains South Carolina treasures from generations past. by Jim Poindexter
The South Carolina Governor's Mansion has stood at the crest of Arsenal Hill overlooking downtown Columbia for 140 years. It's a place where the veil of time is almost transparent. As visitors walk through the high-ceilinged rooms, a bit of South Carolina history greets them at every turn. More than the residence of the First Family, the Governor's Mansion is a repository of treasures representing the heritage of the Palmetto State. The rich collection includes silver and china, furniture, paintings and documents. Some pieces date to the 18th Century. Built in 1855, the Governor's Mansion originally served as the officers' quarters for the Arsenal Military Academy, a state-supported military school. After two years at the academy, students moved to The Citadel to complete their education. When Gen. Sherman's troops swept through Columbia in 1865, the mansion was the only school building left standing. In 1868, the mansion was chosen as the official residence for the state's governors. Retiring Gov. James L. Orr called attention to the "commodious building commanding a picturesque view of the city and the valleys of the Congaree, Broad and Saluda Rivers." Governor Robert K. Scott, the first Republican chief executive in the state's history, moved into the residence at the end of 1869. Since then, all but six governors have lived in the home at 800 Richland Street.
