The Geography of North Carolina
Absolute Location: between 33°N and 37°N latitude; between 75°W and 85°W longitude Relative Location: North Carolina is located in the southeast region of the United States. The state is bordered by Virginia to the north, Tennessee to the west, South Carolina to the south, and Georgia to the southwest. The Atlantic Ocean forms North Carolina's eastern border.
Landforms
There are three distinct landforms of the Southeast and of North Carolina: the Coastal Plain , the Piedmont , and the Appalachian Mountains The Coastal Plain is low, flat to gently sloping land that extends along the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Much of the Southeast lies within the Coastal Plain. The Piedmont, characterized by hilly, rolling land, borders the Coastal Plain. The Piedmont extends from Virginia to Alabama. The Appalachian Mountains , the largest range in the eastern United States, stretch from Canada to northern Alabama.

South Carolina Case Study
RESEARCH SUMMARY Principal Investigator: Megan Mehaffey PROJECT SUMMARY States, territories and tribal lands are required to assess the environmental status of their waters on a biennial schedule under section 305 of the Clean Water Act. Part of the assessment includes identification, listing and prioritization of the water bodies that do not meet water quality standards, which is referred to as the 303(d) list. States and other jurisdictions are required to develop Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) for the water bodies on the 303(d) list. A TMDL is a pollution budget for a water body that estimates the amount of pollutant a water body can receive and still meet the designated water quality standards. More information about the TMDL process can be found at: http://www.epa.gov/OWOW/tmdl/index.html

    General State History
The human history of what is now called South Carolina goes back more than 11,000 years when the first Americans migrated into the region, fanned out, and began to develop the individual tribal characteristics encountered by the first European explorers. By the end of the 15th century, South Carolina was the home territory for a wide variety of distinct tribal cultures. The influence of these "first" Carolinians survives in their many names for rivers and geographical features which have been absorbed into our modern English.
Spanish explorers were sailing along the present-day South Carolina coast less than 30 years after Europeans discovered America. In 1526, the Spanish made the first attempt at establishing a settlement in the state on Winyah Bay, near what is now the city of Georgetown. A severe winter, Indian attacks, and disease forced them to abandon their ambitious project.

The objective of this project is to build an integrated issue-driven Internet interface for accessing ocean data in order to facilitate ocean planning and governance in the Southeast. The primary target audience is coastal and ocean resources managers and secondly, the public. This project will provide easy access to information in a format that is conducive to comprehensive planning and management; that delivery format is an interactive Web-based GIS tool. Behind the tool is a framework that holds spatial information and its associated tabular attributes. (For more information on this project, contact the NOAA Coastal Services Center SC Department of Natural Resources
