South Carolina - Geography State of the SE United States. It is bordered by North Carolina (N), the Atlantic Ocean (SE), and Georgia (SW). South Carolina is roughly triangular in shape. The long coast, firm and even and lined with beautiful sand beaches north of Georgetown, becomes generally marshy to the south and is sliced by a network of rivers and creeks, creating a maze of inlets and the famous Sea Islands. The coastal climate is humid subtropical, with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. In this area are found cypress swamps, moss-hung oaks, beautiful flowering gardens, antebellum plantations, and the quaint historic seaports of Georgetown, Beaufort, and Charleston, the latter a major tourist attraction and one of the chief ports of hotels in the Southeast. The fall line, a boundary connecting Atlantic-bound rivers, separates the coastal plain from the rolling Piedmont plateau of the up-country and runs generally parallel to the coast, passing through Columbia. Inland, the climate is temperate, becoming progressively cooler as the altitude increases. In the extreme northwest are the Blue Ridge mts.; they occupy only c.500 sq mi (1,290 sq km) in the state, with Sassafras Mt. (3,560 ft/1,085 m) the highest point.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S CLIMATE
Climate Controls Temperature Precipitation Frozen Precipitation ... Evaporation
CLIMATE CONTROLS
Several factors control the climate. Most important are the state's location in the northern mid-latitudes, its proximity to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains, and elevation. South Carolina's mid-latitude location allows for solar radiation to vary throughout the year, producing four distinct seasons. At the summer solstice, the sun is nearly overhead at solar noon, with a maximum zenith angle of approximately 79 1/2 o ; at winter solstice, the sun is low in the southern horizon at solar noon, with a maximum zenith angle of approximately 23 1/2 o . This allows for a variance in length of day sufficient to produce ample daytime heating during summer and nighttime cooling during winter. The state's position on the eastern coast of a continent is important because land and water heat and cool at different rates. This provides for cooling sea breezes during the summer and warms the immediate coast during the winter. Also, it influences the way pressure and wind systems affect the state. During the summer, South Carolina's weather is dominated by a maritime tropical air mass known as the Bermuda high. Passing over the Gulf Stream, it brings warm, moist air inland from the ocean. As the air comes inland, it rises and forms localized thunderstorms, resulting in a precipitation maxima (Trewarhta,1981).

If you're South Carolina resident, here’s a simple, painless test to measure your garnet level: In the past few weeks, have you . . . * consulted with a doctor, lawyer or pharmacist? * talked with your children’s teachers? * spent time at a South Carolina beach or waterway? If you answered yes to any of the above, your garnet level is probably normal. What is a garnet level? Garnet is the University of South Carolina’s dominant color. A garnet level measures one’s connections with USC’s programs and alumni. Okay, we’re kidding—no one in a lab coat is running around testing South Carolinians’ garnet levels. But the premise is valid: It’s awfully hard to live in the state without enjoying some benefit from the University of South Carolina. There are many USC alumni—more than 190,000, of whom 125,000 live in South Carolina—and many ways the university positively affects the state’s economy and culture. Consider, for example, South Carolina’s beaches, lakes and rivers that nearly everyone enjoys at one time or another. USC-educated scientists are involved in myriad research projects aimed at improving water quality and addressing coastal pollution and erosion. Your children almost certainly will have USC-trained teachers in the course of their kindergarten-through-college education.

My numerous and diverse interests make me a true geographer at heart, although I specialize in physical geography. My primary professional interests include applied climatology, climate impacts, microclimatology, and human/environment interaction. During spring 2004, I'll be teaching introduction to physical geography lectures and labs as well as introduction to meteorology here at EKU's Richmond campus . In addition to these courses, I am also co-Faculty Advisor for the Geography Club along with Dr. Mark Wiljanen. I'm currently working on a new natural hazards course, which will be offered in fall 2004. In addition, I also have several ideas for advanced climate courses that I hope can be offered in the future. If you have any questions about the geography program at Eastern, physical geography in general, or just want to know more about what geographers really do, I encourage you to send me an email or stop by my office during office hours. I'd be happy to meet with you and "set a spell."

Geography could play role in GOP Senate race
By LEE BANDY
Columnist

The guess is, DeMint would have gotten a chilly reception. Geography is emerging as a major issue in the June 8 Republican primary for the seat now occupied by Democrat Fritz Hollings, a Charlestonian, who retires next year after 38 years in the U.S. Senate. Of the six candidates seeking the GOP nomination, DeMint is the only one from the Upstate. The others are from the Lowcountry, the Pee Dee and the Grand Strand. Aiesi recently participated in a political forum on Hilton Head Island and found voters objecting to the idea of two senators from the Upstate. DeMint takes it all in stride.
