Related Category: U.S. Political Geography South Carolina's manufacturing industries have historically depended on the state's agricultural products as well as on water power. For example, the huge textile and clothing industries, centered in the Piedmont, are based on that region's cotton crop; lumbering and related enterprises (such as the manufacture of pulp and paper) rely on the c.12.5 million acres (5 million hectares) of forestland that cover the state : the longleaf and loblolly pine are prevalent. Other leading manufactures are chemicals, machinery, and automobiles. South Carolina's mineral resources have been of minor importance in the state's economy; except for some gold, most are nonmetallic : cement, stone, clays, and sand and gravel. In agriculture, tobacco and soybeans now rival cotton as South Carolina's chief crops. Broiler chickens and cattle are economically important, and peanuts, pecans, sweet potatoes, and peaches are grown in abundance. Fishing is a major commercial enterprise; the chief catches are blue crabs and shrimp. Military bases and nuclear facilities are important to the economy, and the tourist industry today ranks as the state's chief source of income. Sections in this article:

For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
The Census Bureau produces population estimates for the Nation, the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, census regions and divisions, and metropolitan areas.
Census Regions and Divisions
Counties (and equivalents)
Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.

Columbia, South Carolina
Columbia is the capital of South Carolina , a state of the United States of America . As of the census, it has a population of 116,278. It is the county seat of Richland County . The estimated population for the then two-county metro area was 516,251 in . In June of 2003 the United States Census Bureau added four more counties to the standard metropolitan statistical area, making the 'official' population figures more reflective of the actual makeup of the region and bringing the estimated total to 664,229 residents (Richland, Lexington, Kershaw, Fairfield, Calhoun, and Saluda counties) as of July 2002. Columbia is home to the main campus of the University of South Carolina . Fort Jackson is the largest United States Army Initial Entry (basic) training base and is located east of the city. Columbia is the home of the Capital City Bombers minor league baseball team and the Columbia Inferno of the East Coast Hockey League On February 17 during the American Civil War , Columbia was burned and largely destroyed by Union troops under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman though the handful of Confederate forces defending the city had already surrendered.

Beaufort South Carolina Geography
Beaufort County has 587 square miles of islands, 64 large- and medium-sized islands and some 2,000 smaller ones that were formed over thousands of years. These islands, the product of waves, currents and storms, are in a constant state of slow change.
Fresh waters from inland rivers meet the ocean here to form an estuarine network of tidal creeks and marshes so rich in nourishment that wildlife, birds and fish of incredible variety come here to feed and breed. St. Helena Sound to the north has four channels, but otherwise is a vast, shallow delta of ever-changing sandy shoals. To the south, the water is deep. The Broad River flows into Port Royal Sound, which lies between St. Helena and Parris Island on the Beaufort side and Hilton Head Island on the far side. Port Royal Sound is the second deepest natural port on the Eastern seaboard. It was the arrival of the Union Navy into Port Royal Sound that caused the citizens of Beaufort to flee the city in 1861, after which it became a Union medical center.
Among the areas covered in the term "South of Broad" are Hilton Head, Bluffton, Daufuskie, Callawassie, Okatie and Sun City, which straddles Beaufort and Jasper counties. "North of Broad" includes Beaufort and Port Royal, St. Helena, Lady's Harbor, Fripp, Hunting, Cat, Cane, Distant, Lost, Dataw and Polowana Islands, Sheldon and parts of Yemassee.

History
North Augusta is established on the spot where three towns have stood in the past. The English established a trading post known as Savannah Town nearly 300 years ago. This town was abandoned when Augusta, Georgia proved to be more prosperious and attractive to traders. Campbelltown was established as a trading point for tobacco traders over 200 years ago. Again, competition, sometimes violent opposition, from the Georgia side of the Savannah River , coupled with a recession in the tobacco market spelled the end of Campbelltown 60 years later. Nearly 150 years ago the town of Hamburg was established as a docking point for steam boats coming up the river from Charleston. Eventually, a railroad connecting Hamburg and Charleston was established, leading to a boom for the town. The construction of the Augusta Canal, allowing upriver traders to do business in Augusta , dealt a blow to the prosperity of the town. The final blow came when a rail bridge linked the railroad to the
