Sea Islands . The coastal climate is humid subtropical, with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. In this area are found cypress swamps, moss-hung oaks, beautiful flowering gardens, antebellum plantations, and the historic seaports of Georgetown, Beaufort, and Charleston, the latter a major tourist attraction and one of the chief ports of entry in the Southeast. The fall line on the state's Atlantic-bound rivers separates the coastal Low Country from the rolling Piedmont plateau of the Up Country and runs generally parallel to the coast, passing through Columbia. Inland the climate is temperate, becoming progressively cooler as the elevation increases. In the extreme northwest are the Blue Ridge Mts.; they occupy only c.500 sq mi (1,290 sq km) in the state, with Sassafras Mt. (3,560 ft/1,085 m) the highest point. Rainfall is abundant and well distributed throughout South Carolina. The Pee Dee, Santee, Edisto, and Savannah river systems drain the state, flowing from the highlands to the sea, creating rapids and waterfalls. This abundant source of hydroelectric power is one of South Carolina's most important natural resources. Several nuclear plants operate in the state as well.

    Potential for Gold Discoveries
Production of gold was important in South Carolina during the 1800's and it is again contributing to the State's economic growth as a result of the opening of four gold mines (Brewer, Haile, Ridgeway, and Barite Hill) in the last decade. To support and help sustain this economic growth, the USGS has applied its geological and geochemical expertise to investigations of the gold deposits and their geologic setting in rocks of the Carolina slate belt ( fig. 1 ). These studies provide information to evaluate the potential for discovery of new deposits. Preliminary reports on issues of special interest for exploration, or that address environmental concerns, are released as soon as information is available. Abbreviation:
SC South Carolina is the southern portion of the original 1629 land grant made by England's King Charles I, which was named in his honor (Carolus is Latin for Charles). Settled by the English in 1670, South Carolina was based on a plantation culture with an aristocratic, wealthy society that was dependent on black slave labor. One of the original 13 colonies, South Carolina was first formed in 1729 when the Carolina colony was divided in two to form North and South Carolina. The attack on Fort Sumter in the Charleston harbor launched the Civil War. Today, South Carolina is a growing research center and banking state. South Carolina has retained many features of the South of pre-Civil War days. Graceful buildings, erected before the war, stand in Charleston, Beaufort and other cities. Large plantations, which were once the backbone of the South's economy, still remain in parts of South Carolina. The state's mountains, seashores and historic sites make the state an ideal vacationland.

These regions are cultural units rather than governmental units formed by history and geography and shaped by the economics, literature and folkways that all the parts of a region share. What makes one region different from another? A region's multicultural heritage as well as distinct demographic characteristics like age and occupation make regions different and special. Within several regions, language is used differently and there are strong dialects. There are also differences in outlook and attitude based on geography. New England - including Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Wellesley, Smith, Williams, Amherst, and Wesleyan - is unequaled by any other region. America's first college, Harvard, was founded at Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1636. Without, however, large expanses of rich farmland or a mild climate, generations of exasperated New England farmers declared that the chief product of their land was stones. By 1750, many settlers had turned from farming to other pursuits. In their business dealings, New Englanders gained a reputation for hard work, shrewdness, thrift, and ingenuity.
