Sea Islands . The coastal climate is humid subtropical, with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. In this area are found cypress swamps, moss-hung oaks, beautiful flowering gardens, antebellum plantations, and the historic seaports of Georgetown, Beaufort, and Charleston, the latter a major tourist attraction and one of the chief ports of entry in the Southeast. The fall line on the state's Atlantic-bound rivers separates the coastal Low Country from the rolling Piedmont plateau of the Up Country and runs generally parallel to the coast, passing through Columbia. Inland the climate is temperate, becoming progressively cooler as the elevation increases. In the extreme northwest are the Blue Ridge Mts.; they occupy only c.500 sq mi (1,290 sq km) in the state, with Sassafras Mt. (3,560 ft/1,085 m) the highest point. Rainfall is abundant and well distributed throughout South Carolina. The Pee Dee, Santee, Edisto, and Savannah river systems drain the state, flowing from the highlands to the sea, creating rapids and waterfalls. This abundant source of hydroelectric power is one of South Carolina's most important natural resources. Several nuclear plants operate in the state as well.

Beaufort South Carolina Geography
Beaufort County has 587 square miles of islands, 64 large- and medium-sized islands and some 2,000 smaller ones that were formed over thousands of years. These islands, the product of waves, currents and storms, are in a constant state of slow change.
Fresh waters from inland rivers meet the ocean here to form an estuarine network of tidal creeks and marshes so rich in nourishment that wildlife, birds and fish of incredible variety come here to feed and breed. St. Helena Sound to the north has four channels, but otherwise is a vast, shallow delta of ever-changing sandy shoals. To the south, the water is deep. The Broad River flows into Port Royal Sound, which lies between St. Helena and Parris Island on the Beaufort side and Hilton Head Island on the far side. Port Royal Sound is the second deepest natural port on the Eastern seaboard. It was the arrival of the Union Navy into Port Royal Sound that caused the citizens of Beaufort to flee the city in 1861, after which it became a Union medical center.
Among the areas covered in the term "South of Broad" are Hilton Head, Bluffton, Daufuskie, Callawassie, Okatie and Sun City, which straddles Beaufort and Jasper counties. "North of Broad" includes Beaufort and Port Royal, St. Helena, Lady's Harbor, Fripp, Hunting, Cat, Cane, Distant, Lost, Dataw and Polowana Islands, Sheldon and parts of Yemassee.

South Carolina has many different regions. Some examples include the Blue Ridge, Piedmont, Sandhills, Inner Coastal Plains, Outer Coastal Plains, and Coastal Zone Regions. These are very important features of the land of South Carolina. They represent how the state is divided into all the regions. The Blue Ridge region, the smallest region, is named for the Blue Ridge Mountains, located in the extreme northwestern corner of SC. This region covers less than 2% of the state, about 600 square miles. Its natural features include rugged land, elevation from 1,400 feet to more than 3,500 feet. The mountains of SC were formed more than 350 million years ago. The mountains consist of metamorphic rock, and have eroded by slow movement of material downhill. The steepest slopes in SC are located in the Blue Ridge region. The highest mountain in SC is Pinnacle Mountain at 3,425 feet. Sassafras Mountain is shared between SC and NC, and rises to 3,554 feet above sea level. The closest zone to the Atlantic Ocean is the Coastal Zone. This zone covers the entire coast and barrier islands (the islands off the coast, which protect from waves and storms). This zone covers about 10 miles inland.
