The Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Senior Services is designated by the Governor as the "State Unit on Aging," to receive and administer federal funds received through the Older Americans Act. The Bureau works with a network of regional and local organizations to develop and manage programs and services to improve the quality of life for South Carolina's older citizens, and to help them remain independent in their homes and communities. The Bureau pays special attention to those older adults who have the greatest social, economic, and health needs, and to rural and low-income minority elders. Public Affairs Director Fax (803) 898-5446 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 2, 2000 South Carolina Department of Revenue wins service, education award Two new taxpayer service programs initiated by the South Carolina Department of Revenue have brought the agency national recognition. The Federation of Tax Administrators, a national organization comprised of tax officials from the 50 states, has named the Department of Revenue as the winner of the 2000 Leon Rothenberg Award for Taxpayer Service and Education. The organization selected the Department of Revenue for the award because of the agency's new tax education program geared to the state's elementary and high school children and for the agency's achievements in their online income tax filing system. The award is named for a former FTA executive director. FTA cited the Department of Revenue for its success this year with a taxpayer education program called "TaxsmART: Picture Your Taxes, a Child's View of the Services that Taxes Fund." The program uses art to give the state's students an understanding of government services funded by taxes. Each participating student is given a website address for a specific state agency or division where they can learn about the services provided by that organization. Students then make drawings depicting those state services. The artwork is displayed at the Department of Revenue headquarters and district offices and judges select the best of the entries for special recognition.

Enrollment increased by 38 percent between 1990 and 2000. There are two staff monitors, and we use retiree LEA special educators as needed.
