Child Care
"... in an effort to help those who are most unable to help themselves." Through its Child Care Division, The Duke Endowment carries out Mr. Duke's wishes for enhancing the welfare of children in North Carolina and South Carolina. The Endowment awards grants to licensed residential child-care facilities, licensed adoption placement agencies, and Prevent Child Abuse of North Carolina and South Carolina and their affiliates, and under certain circumstances to public children's welfare agencies. Grants are not available for child day-care centers unless they are affiliated with one of these organizations. Grant applications are accepted year-round. 22. Improving After-School Programs
The Approach The child care Division intends to select about 30 afterschool programs in North carolina and south carolina to participate in this effort.

Request for Proposals:
Improving After-School Programs Introduction
The Child-Care Division of The Duke Endowment is launching a three-year effort to improve the quality of existing after-school programs for children who are at risk for abuse and neglect. Specifically, this effort targets:
Programs that serve a high percentage of children ages 6-12 whose families are eligible for state subsidies,
Programs that primarily serve children whose families exhibit identified characteristics indicating risk for abuse or neglect,
Programs located in identified high-need communities.
The Endowment will provide training, consultation, and funding to help selected programs improve the quality of their services and achieve higher levels of licensure or accreditation.
Those traditional beneficiaries of the Endowment that offer formal after-school program targeting at-risk children will be eligible to apply for grants. Other organizations that provide after-school programs - including YMCAs and YWCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, and churches of any denomination - will also be eligible if their after-school services target children at risk for abuse or neglect. Also, any after-school program located in a Title I school will be eligible if the program receives no funding from the public school system.

Special-Needs Resources in South Carolina If you have a special-needs child, South Carolina is not a bad place to live. Fortunately, our state makes some attempt at caring for their special kids and I have found it to be one of the better states (from conversations with people from other states) as far as services and help availability. The ONE problem I keep seeing again and again is that once you get hooked into these services, it's great, but FINDING them in the first place is iffy. I am very thankful that I "accidentally" ran into a wonderful lady (and now a good friend) who happened to be the mother of some special-needs kids while my daughter was still in ICU that first time. She gave me some names of agencies to contact and I DID contact them, but only in the course of trying to find HER again after I lost her number! :-) I had no need for them immediately, but it was an incredible blessing to be already set-up when things DID come up that we needed. If your child meets eligibility guidelines, I would strongly urge you to get involved with these agencies. They don't move quickly in all cases, and it can take months to get all the paperwork correct and in order. So waiting until you REALLY need them may delay that help down the road. Some of the services overlap, but that's actually a GOOD thing because if you reach preset limits with one program, continued services can often be provided through another program. I am primarily listing the MAIN programs, since the other programs must be accessed through those. I have added a few specific programs and some descriptions of certain services because many times the parents must know what they are asking for in order to explain it to those who should, but sometimes DON'T, know what we're asking them to do.

About the College
How to Become a Patient Patient Care Programs Dental Faculty Practice Sequence of Treatment Emergency Care Treatment Policy
The College of Dental Medicine offers a wide range of patient care programs and clinical services ranging from simple cleanings to the most complex of care involving surgery, crowns or implants. Since treatment is provided by primarily by students who are carefully supervised by faculty, care progresses more slowly than in a private dental office. Dental residents and full-time College faculty offer treatment for those cases too complex for our student dentists.
Description of Providers
Student dentists are carefully supervised by the faculty of the College. Since our students are learning, care takes considerably longer as the faculty monitors the progress of each procedure and patient. To compensate our patients for this additional time, there is a considerable reduction in treatment fees.
Residents have graduated from dental school and are acquiring advanced training in general dentistry or a dental specialty. Treatment fees are higher than those of student dentists but lower than our faculty care area.

The Cooperative Extension's Efforts to Impact Child Care
January-December, 1997
A survey conducted by the National Network for Child Care
NNCC is reaching thousands of children and families through child care programs. As part of the effort by the National Extension Network to collect data about Extension's role in raising the quality of child care, a national survey was conducted.
Thirty-one states (60%) and two territories (Puerto Rico and Guam) responded with data. Indications are that across the nation, Cooperative Extension is reaching hundreds of thousands of individuals in an effort to build quality child care for America.
Of the 32 states responding, cumulative totals indicate that for calendar year 1997, Cooperative Extension reached over 134,500 child care providers. Of these, 8% were school-age child care providers, 23% were family child care providers caring for children in their homes, 16% were center-based child care providers and 1% were reached through community coalitions and child care councils. Fifty percent did not indicate a provider type.
With a local presence in over 3,000 cooperative extension centers in the nation, educational programs are generally delivered locally to child care providers. In order to meet the scheduling needs of providers, learning sessions often must be offered in the evenings or on weekends. During the reporting year, over 32,500 individual training sessions were reported. Of these, 1,456 were for school-age providers, 1,877 were conducted for family child care providers, and 2,337 were for center-based child care providers.
