Spheniscus humboldti Classification and Range
Humboldt penguins belong to the family Spheniscidae which includes about 18 species of penguins. Humboldt penguins are found along the coast of Peru and Chile in the Humboldt current, which flows north along the west coast of the Americas.
If you like this animal and find it particularly fascinating you can adopt it! Habitat
The Humboldt penguin lives on rocky mainland shores, especially near cliffs, or on coastal islands. Height
15-18 inches (38-45 cm) Weight
Approximately 9 pounds (4 kg) Life Span
Approximately 20 years in the wild; up to 30 years at zoos Diet
In the wild: Fish, especially anchovies, herring and smelt. At the zoo: Live trout, smelt and herring with vitamins added. Reproduction
Humboldt penguins can breed at any time of the year. Sexual maturity is reached between 2 and 7 years old. Nests are made in caves, cracks or holes and occasionally in more open sites such as rocky shore. Humboldt penguins usually dig burrow-like nests among piles of guano (accumulated droppings of sea birds) which forms in caves and along cliffs. Females lay one or two eggs and the incubation period is approximately 40 days. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs. At times, only one chick survives because hatching is staggered and one chick may be smaller than another. When food is scarce the parents feed only the larger chick and the smaller chick quickly starves.

Red-Legged Seriemas Hatch at the National Zoo South America's tropical rainforest and its spectacular plants and animals get so much attention that it's easy to forget that there are other South American habitats that boast equally interesting species. East of Andes and south of the Amazon, for instance, are partly open, fairly dry habitats ranging from savanna-like grasslands to arid woodlands. Red-legged Seriema
Long-legged maned wolves live here, as do capybara, the world's large rodents, and strange-looking giant anteaters with very long snouts. The Chaco, dry wooded lowland habitat in parts of Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina, is the only home of the Chacoan peccary. This large mammal, weighing between 65 and 90 pounds, was first identified by scientists as recently as the 1970s. Two species of rheas, very large flightless birds resembling ostriches, also wander the open plains. Then there are seriemas (Cariama cristata) , large predatory birds with long legs, necks, and tails.

Baby Warthog
This little piglet is prettier than you'd expect. A warthog was born on April 23, 2004 to first-time mom, Andee and dad, Dug. The youngster's gender is still unknown.
Although warthogs have been dubbed "world's ugliest pig", visitors can judge for themselves. The warthog family has not yet ventured into their outdoor area but are on exhibit inside the Zoo's Pachyderm Building.
Warthogs are found in Africa, south of the Sahara. They can weigh up to 200 pounds - a barrel-shaped body on thin, spindly legs - and are surprising speedy. They dodge predators like lions or hyenas by running away at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. Male warthogs use their four tusks to spar during mating season. The fleshy, wart-like bumps covering the male's head (hence the name) may cushion the blows.

Very Current
Humboldt penguins share their name with the chilly Humboldt Current, which flows north from Antarctica along the Pacific Coast of South America, where the birds live. Both birds and current are named after the 18th-century explorer Alexander von Humboldt.
Black and White and Pink All Over
Humboldts are medium-sized penguins, averaging 28 inches long and weighing about 9 pounds. You can recognize them by the black band of feathers across their chest. Females are slightly smaller than males, but otherwise look very similar. Humboldts have added another color to the plain black and white of other penguins: pink! They have splotchy pink patches on their face and feet, as well as the underside of their wings. Actually, the pink doesn't come from their feathers: it's the result of bare skin patches, an adaptation that helps keep the birds cool in a warmer climate (see Fun Facts Penguins' torpedo-shaped bodies are designed for moving efficiently through water. Humboldts can reach speeds of 30 miles per hour. They use their wings to help them swim, and their webbed feet to steer underwater. Their bones tend to be denser than those of flying birds, since the extra weight helps them dive to greater depths.

89. Zoo Keeping As A Career, AAZK
By working in a zoo I get to travel the savannas of Africa, the rainforests of south America, and the tropics of India all in one day!
http://www.aazk.org/aazknew/zoo_career.asp
"Zoo keeper" is a term used to describe an individual who cares for animals in zoological parks or aquariums. A career as a zoo keeper offers a unique opportunity in the specialized and demanding profession of maintaining captive exotic animals for conservation, research, public education and recreation. Zoo keepers care for a diverse collection of animals from mammals and birds to reptiles and amphibians to fish and invertebrates. Some keepers become highly specialized, such as those who work in animal hospitals or who concentrate on a specific group of animals such as exotic birds, great apes, elephants or reptiles. Important basic duties of zoo keepers include daily cleaning and maintentance of animal enclosures and proper feeding of the animals under their care. Zoo keepers may help design, build and repair animal enclosures and care for the plants in and around the exhibits. Keepers must also be excellent observers, learning habits and behaviors of both individual animals and groups. Professional zoo keepers must be able to detect subtle changes in an animal's physical or psychological condition and then react accordingly. These responsibilities should not be underestimated since they are essential in maintaining a healthy and reproductively successful animal colletion. In addition, zoo keepers will work closely with zoo managers on conservation, reproductive husbandry and research projects. This research will provide zoos with important information to help preserve rare and endangered species and learn more about species which may become threatened in the future.

Baby Spectacled Bear Debut The spectacled bear, Juaquin, born 6 months ago at Reid Park Zoo has made his public debut. The bear is having a great time exploring the rocks, grass, trees, and ponds of his exhibit. Due to the rarity of spectacled bears, this is an exciting birth for Reid Park Zoo. This is only the 2nd successful spectacled bear birth in Tucson. The spectacled bear, named for the white markings typically found around the eyes, is the only species of bear living in South America. The species is endangered due to loss of habitat, hunting, and population fragmentation. It is estimated that only a few thousand remain in the wild.

Iwokrama Develops Model Partnership for Conservation with Jacksonville Zoo
15 April 2004 Guyana has a rich history of wildlife research, conservation and management. In their heyday, the Guyana Zoo , Guyana Museum, and the Royal Agricultural and Commercial Society (now the Guyana Society Collection) were considered centres of excellence for wildlife research and management. From the 1800's Guyanese animals were collected for zoos in Europe and North America, and international conservationists and scientists, including Gerald Durrell and David Attenborough, brought attention to Guyana's wildlife through many books and films. However, during the 1970's Guyana disappeared off the radar screen of wildlife research, conservation and management. International interest in Guyana's wildlife has undergone a revival in the last ten years and organisations like Iwokrama and the Jacksonville Zoological Gardens are at the forefront of that revival. Guyana's forests are now recognized by Conservation International and the World Resources Institute as "frontier forests" and Guyana's wetlands are recognized as a WWF Global 200 Ecosystem .
