NEWS FROM THE ZOOS
News from National Aquarium in Baltimore
In the South American rain forest at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, nine splashbacked poison dart frogs have metamorphosed in a backup area. This is significant because to the knowledge of Aquarium herpetologists, this is a first in this country. Black with a splash of orange, they will be in the Amazon River Forest exhibit, now in the planning stage. Twenty-five species of poison dart frogs have been successfully bred at this Aquarium. A gray seal that has been rehabilitated by Marine Animal Rescue Program personnel will be released this fall from Nahant, near Boston. This is the first gray seal released by the Aquarium. It will be transported to the area in a Coast Guard plane, first class accommodations, and fitted with a satellite tag so that its movements can be tracked.
A recently released hooded seal has been tracked to the Newfoundland area. It is doing well and diving to depths of 1,000 feetóthe length of more than three football fields. Its satellite tag is providing new information about the diving patters of hooded seals.
North Carolina Aquariums Plan Expansion
The Fort Fisher Aquarium, situated at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, will center its expansion plans on the "Waters of Cape Fear River System." Tanks and exhibits will highlight the aquatic life found in freshwater rivers and swamps to estuaries, reefs, and the open ocean. Five aquatic zones of North Carolina will be interpreted in the renovated aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. "Aquatic Life from the Mountains to the Sea" will focus on mountain streams, piedmont rivers and lakes, waters of the coastal plain, swamps and marshes, and the open ocean.

Chapter One: Llamas!
[page 2]
History of Llamas and Alpacas in North America
Zoos have been homes to llamas in this country for over a hundred years, typically breeding with their offspring generation after generation. Beginning in the late 1920s, William Randolph Hearst imported some llamas to roam the hills of his grand San Simeon Estate on California's central coast. He had a dozen llamas in 1931. Around that time, the United States government banned importation from any country where Foot and Mouth Disease was present. Since the ban, some animals have come in from countries free of the disease, or in more recent years by undergoing quarantine processes. It has sometimes been said that the basis of North American stock was only the Hearst herd, but in actuality there were also the zoo animals and some others. Still, it is true that thousands of North American animals are descended from a small number. It has been estimated that at the time of the importation ban in 1930, there were two hundred fifty llamas in this country. Many of those were actually guanacos, an undomesticated close relative of the llama, or llama-guanaco crosses.

Zoo set to open new exhibits
By Nikki Davis Maute
American Staff Writer nmaute@hattiesb.gannett.com A new exhibit at the Hattiesburg Zoo is set to open next month and work is progressing on the now-closed west side of the zoo. The opening of the jaguar exhibit as part of the South American exhibit is the first new exhibit to open since the alligator exhibit in August 2002. "We've got the space and management area that would enable us to later breed him," said Lori Banchero, zoo administrator. Banchero said the zoo will work with the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Species Survival Plan to attempt a breeding program. The plan helps zoos who participate in a breeding program for certain endangered animals. Banchero said the jaguar qualifies.

A publicly recognized badge of excellence Do you know why these zoos and aquariums are in our database? Because they're accredited by AZA! Accreditation is proof positive that an institution is committed to the highest standards in animal care, ethics, conservation, and education. What is accreditation? AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums undergo a rigorous six-month long review as well as an on-site inspection by a team of experts who examine the animal collection, veterinary care, the exhibits and physical facilities, safety, security, finances, staffing, and involvement in education, conservation, and research. Once awarded, accreditation must be renewed every five years.
