South America finds its way to Tucson zoo
By Carol Romero
A three-acre South American animal exhibit will open in early 1997 at the Reid Park Zoo. Zoo officials think the addition will increase attendance that will result in raising the educational valu e of all of the exhibits. The City of Tucson could gain research, conservation and educational capabilities from the planned exhibit. "We do not know exactly how many animals there will be at the opening," said Vivian Warren, zoo education curator. "We are still in the process of locating animals from around the country." All of the animals being acquired for the new addition have been in other zoos within the United States. The zoo trades, purchases and borrows animals from other zoos to enhance the collection. The animals that will be on display include a spectacled bear, anteater, llama, rhea, capybara, caiman, tapir, jaguar, piranha, sloth, water fowl and South American bird species, Warren said. The zoo already has the tapir, llama, caiman, sloth and many birds that will be on display in 1997. They are currently being housed behind the scenes until the opening of the new area. All animals that enter the zoo go through a quarantine period of at least 30 days to ensure the health of all other animals. Quarantine is conducted in a health center at the zoo. After quarantine , animals are introduced to their new homes under the supervision of the zoo's staff.

Breeding and Conserving Endangered Canids Meeting the Challenge of Preserving Endangered Species
The Wild Canid Project of the Smithsonian National Zoological Park focuses on studying the biology of wild canids to improve reproductive success and to maintain self-sustaining zoo and wild populations. Diverse and Increasingly Rare From the two-pound fennec fox that survives the rigors of Arabian deserts to the 175-pound timber wolf that ranges throughout the wild reaches of the Northern Hemisphere, canids (dog-like mammals) are a diverse and wide-ranging family of mammals. Yet, these charismatic cousins of our oldest and most faithful companion, the domestic dog, are rapidly disappearing. Nine of 19 species in the world are listed as "threatened" or "endangered," and several are near extinction due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, and disease. Yet, compared to other carnivores (the wild cats and bears), canids receive less public and conservation attention. And amazingly, the reproductive biology of wild canids (the essence of their survival) continues to be a mystery.

    Saving the Black Rhino
    Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Gets Involved
    And So Can You
The mission of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is 'to improve the future for wildlife' but the goal of saving critically endangered black rhinos cannot be accomplished alone. The Zoo worked with many conservation groups including the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), the International Rhino Foundation, the South African National Park Board, Kansas City Zoological Park, and the Cincinnati Zoo to pair black rhinos, Inge and Spike. Their future offspring will strengthen the genetic diversity of the black rhino population. AMERICAN ZOO AND AQUARIUM ASSOCIATION:
Known as AZA, the American Zoo and Aquarium Association represents virtually every professionally operated zoological park, aquarium, and wildlife park in North America. AZA supports membership excellence in conservation, education, science, and recreation. SPECIES SURVIVAL PLANS:
The AZA established Species Survival Plans (SSP), a cooperative population management and conservation program for selected species or rare, threatened, and endangered animals in North American zoos and aquariums. Each SSP manages the breeding of a species in order to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse and self-sustaining population. It's like a computer dating service designed to produce the healthiest babies for the zoo population. Maintaining a healthy captive population is essential to the survival of any species facing the threat of extinction. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is participating in the 51 SSPs including the black rhino SSP.

7 acres of monkeys and apes This spectacular 7-acre facility is home to extremely social primates - large and small - in a habitat that very closely replicates their natural environment. Tree-dwelling monkeys delight in the open-air wire mesh tents that soar four stories high and cover more than an acre of ground. . Inside these tents, the monkeys play and climb on twisting vines, and drink from the cool streams. The gorillas roam freely in their one-acre exhibit, climbing ropes and taking afternoon hammock naps in one of the most expansive gorilla habitats in the world. The Jewels of the Emerald Forest pavilion features a meandering trail through a series of diorama replicas showing four primate environments: Malagasy, South American forest floor and forest canopy as well as primates of the night. In the Great Apes building, visitors can find orangutans and a family of western lowland gorillas. The nearby Shamba offers a view of a Central West African village and the importance of humans' learning to coexist with wildlife and share available natural resources. Walking through the Forest Aviary, a 7,500 square foot area richly landscaped and enclosed in a nearly invisible wire mesh, visitors can view a collection of birds native to South America as well as small deer - the southern pudu which is rarely found in zoos.

South American Margay This is the only zoo in Britain to hold both Amur ( above ) and Sumatran Tigers, the biggest and smallest tigers left in the world. The zoo now holds all six South American Margays ( left ) that are in this country. The zoo plays an important role as co-ordinator for the Geoffroys Cat European Endangered Species Programme, and the Lar Gibbon European Studbook. These programmes enable a tight control to be held over the genetics, and improve the long term viability of these species in captive management. In the Australian Bush area, many animals have complete freedom to wander at will, such as lemur monkeys, exotic deer, emus, wallabies and kangaroos. Parrots fly freely in the trees. Special food can be purchased to hand feed some of these animals.

HISTORY OF THE AKRON ZOOLOGICAL PARK In 1900, George and Ann Perkins, heirs of the city’s founder, Simon Perkins, donated what is now Perkins Woods Park to the City of Akron. They stipulated that the 79 acres be used for “...the sole purpose of devoting the same to the uses of a public park, especially as a place for recreation for children.” With this goal in mind, the Akron Museum of Natural History was incorporated in 1950, by Charles E. Slusser, Richard S. Barnhardt, Daniel E. Falkner, Myrtle Pfueger, and Fred O. Smoyer. The Museum operated as a non-profit organization and helped to stimulate interest in the conservation of natural resources and provided entertainment for the public in the Summit County area. The Akron Children’s Zoo was started in 1953 in association with the Museum. The zoo’s theme was Mother Goose Rhymes illustrated with live animal exhibits. Public support helped the zoo open ten exhibits in 1954, and an additional exhibit, the Merry Miller, in 1955. Sponsored by the Yusef-Khan Grotto, all mentally retarded, handicapped, and underprivileged children were admitted free.

All newborns are precious, but Roger Williams Park Zoo recently welcomed two little ones that are both precious AND rare - Humboldt penguin chicks. Hatched just five days apart in late February, the chicks are thriving and are important additions to the captive population of this threatened species. Though the gender of the chicks has not yet been determined, zoo staff have named them Puck and Pocket. Both chicks are the offspring of Pita (female) and Pinto (male), two of the eleven penguins that reside at the zoo. Penguins mate for life and both the male and female take part in incubating eggs and rearing chicks. Puck and Pocket will continue to be cared for by their parents off-exhibit until late April, when the pair would naturally begin the weaning process. Then they'll begin learning to swim and to accept hand-feeding from zookeepers. The public can expect to see Puck and Pocket out on exhibit by early May.

The Brookfield Zoo is just a short drive (12 miles west) from downtown Chicago. This is one of the country's premier zoos, with more than 2,800 animals in near natural habitats on some 216 acres. The exhibits range from representing the western coast of South America to the eastern African arid savannahs. The mission of this beautiful Brookfield Zoo is to help people develop a sustainable and harmonious relationship with nature.
    History of the Brookfield Zoo
In 1919 Edith Rockefeller McCormick donated 83 acres of land to the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Illinois for the sole purpose of developing a zoo. The Forest Preserve added additional acreage and after years of failed economy and delays - the zoo became a reality in 1934. The Brookfield Zoo became world renowned for its "barless" exhibits, with the use of natural barriers such as as moats.

What's New at The Zoo? Tropics of the Americas set to open in Spring of 2004 The tropical forest of the new world takes on a new life at night. The nocturnal realm is home to a enormous variety of spectacular and often times misunderstood animals, many of which are not often seen because they are hidden and camouflaged by landscape and darkness. The Mayan Observatory will allow guests to view many of these species such as bats, snakes, salamanders, scorpions, bird-eating tarantulas, geckos, frogs, and centipedes. Having explored the islands and caves, adventurers will then come upon a South American Marketplace. The wild populations of several South American animals have been harmed by the pet trade. This exhibit will display several of these animals and serve to educate zoo visitors about the danger of the pet trade. Animals on display will include green iguana, yellow footed tortoise, milk snakes, tetra, conures, angelfish, parrots, turtles and boa constrictors.
