http://www.thealexandriazoo.com/conservation.html
How you live, what you do, what you buy does make a difference. Conservation is defined as the wise use and protection of our natural resources - plants, animals, or minerals. Our plants and animals that live in the wild are vital in many ways to man's existence - our food supplies, our health, and the quality of our lives. It is important to conserve habitats and entire ecosystems, as well as single species. Development that seems good for us is not always good for the millions of species of plants and animals that also inhabit the planet. As natural habitats around the world are destroyed, species become homeless and eventually disappear. It does not mean that we must stop logging, farming, or hunting, or using our natural resources. But, it does mean that we must do these things with careful planning. Accredited zoos and aquariums view education as a primary commitment to the future of wildlife conservation. Everyone must learn that each animal has its own spot in the complex web of ecology and that to remove or damage one portion of that web may weaken the entire structure. Each species is unique and by destroying even one plant or animal, many other species may be affected. Because of their commitment to captive propagation of endangered species, zoos and aquariums accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association are the last refuge many animals have against extinction. Collectively, zoos and aquariums are the largest conservation education organization in the world, and professionals feel that preserving ecosystems should be a priority in wildlife conservation.

Rudi the orangutan is one of six orangutans at the Houston Zoo. Zoos are one of the best places for families to spend a day. Children, especially, are captivated by animals, particularly animals that are unusual to them. But zoos have a wonderful effect on adults, too. Texas' biggest cities are home to some of the best zoos in the U.S. But there are also some great zoos in a few Texas cities where you wouldn't necessarily expect to find them. Here is our rundown of the best zoos in Texas: Fort Worth Zoo
The Fort Worth Zoo houses 435 species of animals, including 35 endangered species. It is the only zoo in the U.S. to house representatives of all four Great Ape species — gorillas, orangutans, bonobos and chimpanzees; and the only zoo in Texas with pygmy chimps. This zoo has one of the largest reptile collections in the U.S., and is also one of only five zoos in the world to display three of the five rhino species in captivity: black, white and one-horned Asian rhinos. Info: (817) 759-7555. Dallas Zoo
The Dallas Zoo's nearly 100 acres, in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, are home to around 8,000 animals. It's the oldest zoo in Texas, founded in 1888. The park's six habitats can be toured by monorail via the Monorail Safari, a one-mile tour lasting about 25 minutes. The Dallas Zoo is a participant in the national Species Survival Plans for 37 species, including gorillas, tigers, chimps, lemurs, okapis and Bali mynahs. Info: (214) 670-5656.

LIMA - U.S. coffee chain Starbucks Coffee Company SBUX.O began its push into South America on Tuesday with a store in Peru and a new Peruvian-brand of coffee it said would help farmers in a nation where coffee output is expected to fall by a fifth this year.
Starbucks, whose green-and-white logo and 6,500 stores are a fixture on street corners around the globe, is also due to open its doors in Santiago, Chile, this week. The company already has stores in Mexico and Puerto Rico. Peru is South America's third-biggest coffee producer, but sector officials see output falling by at least 20 percent this year because of lower rainfall and plant disease.

Hispanic Heritage Weekend focuses on Bronx Zoo animals by visiting some of the popular exhibits featuring Latin American wildlife including: Monkey House is home to tamarins, marmosets, and other small primates from Central and South American. One of the world's smallest and most beautiful monkeys, the endangered golden lion tamarin from Brazil, is also one of the rarest with only about 1,000 left in the wild. These animals are part of a successful program among accredited zoos that has resulted in returning zoo-bred animals to the wild. With the Geoffroy's tamarin, child-rearing is a group effort - with all family members taking turns carrying and feeding the young. These monkeys are native to Columbia and Costa Rica.

The lowland, Brazilian, or South American tapir ( Tapirus terrestris ) is indigenous to most of the rainforested areas of South America. While there are more of this species left than of the Baird's, mountain and Malayan tapirs, the rainforests are suffering at the hands of humanity, and the tapirs are disappearing along with the rainforest. In addition, tapirs are often hunted, a pressure they cannot withstand for long.
Tapirs figure in myths, legends, and religious beliefs of indigenous people. The Piaroas Indians of South America do not kill the tapir ( Tapirus terrestris ) because they believe tapirs to be "a sacred animal in which their ancestors are reincarnated."
