Office Hours: Check in Geography Department for current hours Bienvenidos! Welcome! This class is a general introduction to the geography of Latin America. We will cover the main aspects of Latin American geography (physical features, pre-historic and historic origins of the cultural landscape, population characteristics, settlement and urbanization, spatial aspects of the modern economy, and regional and global integration). Because of the survey nature of the class we will cover a lot of topics with a broad brush stroke, then fill in some of the detail regarding contemporary issues facing the region. The purpose of the class is to enhance your understanding of Latin America and its place in the world. The course is part of the Latin American Studies Cluster for junior-senior classes in University Studies.
The course primarily addresses the ‘variety of human experience’ goal of University Studies: “[To] enhance…appreciation for and understanding of the rich complexity of the human experience through the study of differences in ethnic and cultural perspectives, class, race, [and] gender….” We will also touch on ‘ethical issues and social responsibility’ (“…expand…understanding of the impact and value of individuals and their choices on society, both intellectually and socially….”) and ‘communication’ (“…enhance …capacity to communicate in various ways—writing, graphics, numeracy, and other visual and oral means—to collaborate effectively with others in group work, and to be competent in appropriate communication technologies”).

Using the Library To use a library effectively you need to be able to find the right books. Almost all libraries use a classification system using numbers, known as the Dewey System. You might find it useful to print this chart, showing the main categories that include books with geographical content. Most librarians will tell you that the geography books are found between 910 and 919. This is where you will find information about continents and countries. Geography covers so many different things, so you may find useful books under other headings, such as science, art and technology. The table below shows some of the topics you may want to look at, and gives their Dewey classification numbers so you can find them! 300 Social Sciences 500 Pure Sciences 600 to 700 Technology/Art 900 Geography / History 314 General statistics of Europe
